Interrelation Between Myofunctional Therapy & Dentistry

Interrelation Between Myofunctional Therapy & Dentistry

In this episode, Dr. Jenny Hobson and Dr. Martha Cortes DDS explain the interrelation between airway centric physical therapy and airway centric dentistry with several case studies, highlighting the complex oral-systemic connection. Dr. Cortes shares how she treats many oral symptoms, such as crowded teeth including examining the patients nasal function with Rhinomanometry. In most cases, she finds the
dysfunctional breathing pattern is often the catalyst to the oral problem. Once Dr. Cortes has fixed the issue, Dr. Jenny stresses the importance of myofunctional therapy, to support the ‘architecture’ that Dr. Cortes has created. Otherwise, patients could experience additional complications. Listen and learn to how these two collaborating clinicians are remodeling the way on common conditions.

Belly Breathing for Relaxation and Health

Belly Breathing for Relaxation and Health

It is an incredible life skill to be aware of how you breathe. We have the ability to breathe in a way that serves our physical body, emotional body and our nervous system.

So, today we are talking about diaphragmatic breathing.

Kristi shares a short breath awareness practice and later Lindsay shares how to do belly breathing, which is the same as diaphragmatic breathing.

We can nurture ourselves through the way we breathe.

We hope you enjoy this episode and that it serves your highest good.

    We love you so much!

    Train Your Wandering Mind

    Train Your Wandering Mind

The brain is so dynamic.  It is capable of volumes of information storage and creative thought.  The brain machine would run on high gear all day every day if we let it.  The problem is, if we allow that, it takes a toll on the body.  Therefore, we must allow the brain to rest.  This is why we meditate.

Meditation, sitting in stillness sounds so blissful, and it is, but what no one tells you is you have to train your mind to meditate; you have to train your attention skills to keep coming back to your meditation practice.

Today’s meditation practice will be two-fold.  First, we will learn a fun and easy way to grab and hold the attention of your brain with a Bumble Bee Meditation.  Then, we will do a fundamental breath awareness exercise that you can use every time your mind wanders.  It’s a skill for life.  You can thank me later.

Let’s train your brain!  It’s time to Hurry Up And Meditate!

    Yoga Nidra: Breath Awareness

    Yoga Nidra: Breath Awareness

This yoga nidra practice is based on the ancient technique called, Shitali Karana. You will be moving awareness on the effortless flow of your breath.

The benefits of this yoga nidra practice provide an energetic rest, enhancing sensitivity to prana and the pranamaya kosha. A feeling of transformation and expansion can happen and detachment from negative emotions.

You will deepen your relaxation and surrender to each breath. Emptying and letting go with each exhale and filling or renewing with each inhale.

    Breathing Back to Balance

    Breathing Back to Balance

Use our "Learn How to Breath Deeply" episode before beginning this practice if you don't know how to belly breathe.

In this practice, you will take slow, deep, complete breaths at a full 5-second count inhalation and 5-second count exhalation, breathing at a 6 breath per minute pace. Studies show that decreasing breaths per minute (by taking longer inhalations and exhalations) is an effective way to maximize HRV (heart rate variability), which has been associated with better health and longevity in the general population.

    Learn How To Breath Deeply

    Learn How To Breath Deeply

When we are born, we naturally belly breathe, allowing for a full oxygen exchange. As we age, we lose touch with how to breathe. This causes  us to hold onto stress and anxiety. Relearning and practicing proper breathing patterns will trigger the body's normal relaxation response, bringing us back to a state of rest and calm.

In this episode, you will begin lying on your belly, then on your back, and finally seated, all while being guided to take deep, belly breaths.

#3: Mindfulness of Breathing Guided Practice

#3: Mindfulness of Breathing Guided Practice

Breath awareness is the heart of a mindfulness practice, a gift that brings the mind and body together in the present moment. This simple, yet profound, meditation will help you relax while also boosting concentration and focus.

You can practice with this meditation by itself. The short format also makes it ideal for meditating before a yoga practice to help you settle the mind and cultivate a state of inner listening.

Skillful Means Podcast offers these guided practices to help you deepen into your yoga and mindfulness journey.
