On today's show, my sole guest, Glenn Donaldson( The Reds, Pinks, and Purples), and I discuss the labyrinth that is Fearfully and Wonderfully, as well as Glenn's love for all things Lungfish.
Beware! You are about to enter into a stream of conversation about perhaps one of the heaviest, deepest and darkest of early Lungfish tracks. By all accounts, their first epic composition. Dan Shaw, of the band Landowner, returns to take this beast on and try and make sense of the mental carnage this song delivers. Then author/comic book writer/musician/podcaster Patrick Kindlon (Drug Church/Self Defense Family) joins me to plumb the depths of Lungfish obsession. I admit I'm afraid,....
Have to admit, it's with a taste of sorrow that I release this episode. It's the last show covering the last album by the force of nature referred to as Lungfish. Not that there's not a handful of other albums to talk about in their catalog. There's just something so poignant and intimate about this release. At least I've got good company to say goodbye to this record with. Drew Lichtenberg is a theater worker, writer and professor. He's also a very warm guy and good friend, always up for a dive into the deepest waters of conversation. It was a pleasure having him on. Hope you enjoy.
"Sing" is a perfectly fitting track to be released on Easter Sunday, a day of Resurrection and renewal, the morning after the pink moon of death and shedding unworthy things. To accompany me this week for the exegesis is returning guest, Seldom Careful from the UK. After that, be a fly on the wall for the second part of my conversation with Tim Kinsella. Sing a vow to keep song.
This week we take the time machine back to 1985 for Gray Matter's debut lp, Food For Thought. Echoes of 60s garage, early 70s rock and late 70s English punk infuse the sound of these old soul high school kids on this album. In addition to digging in track by track with Jeff, we talk to producer, R and B label owner and bassist extraordinaire Bert Queiroz.
A new year brings many things. This year will hopefully bring more episodes and less dis-ease. The opening one for the year is strong medicine. My guest, Paul Hutzler, spent a lot of time on the road with Lungfish and is one of the inner circle of the band. His spirit is large and his heart open, his stories riveting and his insight rare. Also on the show, for the second consecutive exegesis of You Are The War, is Brian Benke. He brings a mystical Christian perspective to the track at hand and adds much to the mystery. Reach out with you opinions to unanimoushourpod@gmail.com and be sure to subscribe and review! Blessings to you.
"Nothing is easy", truer words I haven't heard, especially after the last year in this fallen world. But that is only the beginning of the story. Join me as I attempt to lift the veil and peep with squinted eyes at the beatific mystery behind this song. Joining me on this adventure are Jason Farrell (graphic designer of all the Lungfish album covers) and author (In On The Killtaker)/superfan Joe Gross.
Soulside are back! Trigger is a record that needs to be in everyone's collection. Way ahead of it's time sonically, lyrically and philosophically. Listen to Brian and guest cohost Greg break down just how important this release is and what it means to them personally. We also had the great honor of speaking to three fourths of the band, singer Bobby Sullivan, bassist Johnny Temple and drummer Alexis Fleisig. Listen to this, then go listen to the record! That's an order.
Welcome back, back to the beginning of time and in this song's case, the beginning of Christianity and mass murder. Just another day in Lungfish lore. Sonny Kay (Angel Hair/VSS/Savalas/Mind Rider) stops by to partake in the exegesis of Parthogenesis. Then Nathan Bell speaks about the open mystery of Lungfish's vibratory magic and his time in the service thereof. Contact the pod at unanimoushourpod@gmail.com or find us on Instagram.
Scream's third album was a bold and ambitious statement. On it, they embraced their rock roots and dug into their populist convictions. This record ages better than one would expect. Join Brian and Jeff as they navigate it's adventuous waters. Skeeter Enoch Thompson returns for a very heartfelt and entertaining conversation. Our brother in arms in the hardcore podcasting universes,Greg Polard, from the Where It Went pod, also teams up with the boys to discuss all things Scream-team. See you guys at 50!
"Points of light", with these words Daniel Higgs creates the Big Bang of the Lungfish Multiverse. Join me for a journey through the wild, winding catalog of the most mysterious and mystically minded band to come out of the Dischord catalog. On today's episode we are joined by Colin Bane to examine the first song on the first release. There's a lot to sink your teeth into with this one. It almost functions as a fractal of the whole body of work. We also talk the heartbeat of the band, drummer Mitchell Feldstein. This is part one of a two part interview with the man. The Unanimous Hour is upon us,....
Well, here we are, for our first of many revisits to the Minor Threat cannon. Today we talk to amazing punk rock photographer, Kevin Salk, Gary Bennett (Kill Your Idols/Black Anvil) and Aesop Dekker (Hickey/Ludicra). Everyone chimes in on what makes Minor Threat so damn special and gives personal insight and stories around experiences with the band and their music. In a very short time, Minor Threat left a huge legacy of both great youth anthems and also a blueprint for how to conduct yourself as a band on a mission.
This episode we talk to the man who literally wrote the book on Outsider music, Irwin Chusid. It's a wide ranging and fascinating conversation. His book really sent me down the proverbial rabbithole when I first came across it! Check ti out and be sure to rate, review and tell your friends about the show. Contact me on the Facebook page...
Music from this episode : Intro song - Housekeeper - Lake Lawn/Safe As Milk- Captain Beefheart/Time and Space - Jandek/Philosophy of the World - The Shaggs/Outro song - Sky- Dead C
Welcome to the afterbirth! In our first episode we talk to the legendary David Fair about Half Japanese, films, art and life. Then John Serpico stops by to try and convince me why Charmed Life is the best Half Japanese record, in our Record War segment. In between there is the requisite rants and raves regarding all things Half Japanese and outsider music. Come for the music, stay for the mayhem!
This week Brian and Jeff drop the needle on one of the most celebrated split records of all time. In fact, this is another record that's just too good to tackle in one episode. So this week we talk side "F". The Faith side is really the prequel to the whole Revolution Summer era, as well as Youth Crew SxE and so much more. This side is truly an enigma with a complex and insular heart. Our guest, comedian Chris Estrada, gives great insight into what this record meant to him, also what it was like to grow up in South Central, LA listening to DC hardcore in the 90s and about the intersection of punk and comedy. Tim Lee, of the band Faith/Void also stops by to weigh in on the legacy of this split. Stay tuned for the Void side next week!
Put on your seatbelts, kids. This episode we're taking a road trip up to Boston! Dischord 7.5 is SSD's "The Kids Will Have Their Say", a hands-down historic and game-changing record in early hXc. Al Barile expanded Ian's idea of straight edge from a personal statement into a social and political movement with this LP. We had the pleasure of talking to Nancy Barile (a key mover and shaker in both the early Philly and Boston scenes, who writes and speaks with passion and insight about those times), Al Barile crashes the interview in the best, most unexpected way possible, and we also briefly hear opinions on "Kids" from key figures in the Boston scene (Dave Smalley, Jonathan Anastas, and Mike Gitter)!
We've arrived at the landmark first Dischord LP. The compilation that introduced the world to mighty creativity and energy percolating in D.C. This episode introduces my new cohost, Jeff, as well as takes a deep dive into all the bands on side one of FYH. We also feature interviews with Barry Henssler, Andy Nystrom, Brian Gay and Danny Ingram! Stay tuned for more interviews and opinions when we turn the record over next week and get into side two.
Welcome back, Dischord aficionados, this music both shaped and changed my life, and hopefully these audio travelouges will deepen your appreciation of the house that Ian built, plus all the great music made in the surrounding areas. This week we tackle the raging blast called Youth Brigade. Aldred and I discuss their English (musical) roots, how "No Song (2)" is the hardcore version of John Cage's "Silence" and many other interesting, non-essential musings. Then,...the mighty Danny Ingram stops by the virtual Endhouse to discuss his take on DC punk, Covid-19, and his own personal and musical journey. He covers everything from his time in the Untouchables to Dot Dash. He's a natural storyteller, so you won't even notice that two hours have gone by during his interview. Enjoy! and as always, feel free to reach out to us on Facebook, Instagram or at endonendpod@gmail.com.
This episode we cover the classic Dischord #5, with an abundance of commentary by Brian and Aldred, as well as insights by writer, comedian, and cultural geographer, Tyler Sonnichsen! Be sure to check out his book, "Capitals of Punk", if you enjoy this interview.
