S5E2 Cabana Talk with Osahon Obazuaye - Postcards from Babylon

S5E2 Cabana Talk with Osahon Obazuaye - Postcards from Babylon

We launch the new year with Osahon Obazuaye - the presidential election year looms large. Osahon shares his return to pastoral ministry - this time in a church populated by a significant percentage of immigrants. Ken and Osahon discuss a book explored by Tim Alberta in his bestselling book, The Kingdom the Power and the Glory. Brian Zahnd raises a key question - how does the biblical reference to Babylon play out in our current political climate? Alberta considers Zahnd to be a hopeful thinker. Osahon shares his most recent take on Charlie Kirk and Eric Metaxas. A new documentary is coming soon to amplify Metaxas' version of Bonheoffer, which Ken and Osahon consider well off the mark.  Osahon reflects on the Obama legacy and issues a chilling warning of what just may happen in November. Ken responds with the challenge that we must do all we can to avoid another four years of chaos and rancor.  SHOW NOTES

#55 Redeeming the Incarnation with Father Kenneth Tanner

#55 Redeeming the Incarnation with Father Kenneth Tanner

This week we do a special Advent podcast with a man who is known for understanding the incarnation with the best of them. Father Kenneth Tanner talks about his journey, but most of all the importance of what the incarnation of Jesus actually is. In the evangelical tradition, it has been missed by a large portion of them, but the church fathers knew exactly the implications of the birth of Jesus Christ. May this podcast fill you with cheer, but also a deeper wisdom and appreciation for God becoming man.

The Other Side of Advent with Brian Zahnd

The Other Side of Advent with Brian Zahnd

Merry Christmas! Brian Zahnd is back on the show to discuss his Christmas devotional The Anticipated Christ. We talk about why he's "trying to be religious," the difference between Christmas and Advent, the book of Isaiah, the Magnificat, what nonviolence has to do with Advent, the current Israel–Hamas war, and more.

We also spend a few minutes at the end just riffing on music. Why? Because Brian loves music and created an unconventional Advent playlist to go along with the book. And after our conversation, he created another one inspired by this episode! We strongly recommend rocking out to them while cooking Christmas dinner.

    Connecting Series 3

    Connecting Series 3

Join us as we continue with the third part of this series on connecting. Connecting with God. Connecting with Community. Connecting with Creation.

This week Canon Tim Clayton continues with some more insights from the Acts of the Apostles chapter 17. Connecting with God.

    From Acts 17: 22a, 23b-31:
"From one man he made every nation of the human race to inhabit the entire earth, determining their set times and the fixed limits of the places where they would live, so that they would search for God and perhaps grope around for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us."
Tim points out that God has done this because he loves each of us and he wants his love to be requited/responded too.

Connecting with God is THE thing of life, it is the deepest, the thing for which we are meant. The love of God is the source of ALL that IS. When we begin to love God back things begin to get sorted. It might happen slowly and some things are difficult, it might be painful, it might be happy depending on our circumstances, but through it all, connecting with God is our home.

EP #185 - Holding onto Faith in a Cynical World - Interview with Brian Zahnd

EP #185 - Holding onto Faith in a Cynical World - Interview with Brian Zahnd
Intellectual certainty has long been a cornerstone of the Christian faith. But in an age of secularism, skepticism, and cynicism, our worldviews have been shaken. Various solutions exist - some double down on certainty, while others deconstruct their faith until there is nothing left at all. But Brian Zahnd offers a third way: What is needed is not a demolition, but instead a renovation of faith. Join Pastor Zahnd and myself as he shares with wisdom, candor, and humor. Brian Zahnd is the founder and lead pastor of Word of Life Church, a non-denominational Christian congregation in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Brian and his wife, Peri, founded the church in 1981. Brian is also the author of several books, including, Sinners in the Hands of a Loving God, Water to Wine, A Farewell To Mars, Beauty Will Save the World, and Unconditional?: The Call of Jesus to Radical Forgiveness, and When Everything's on Fire. https://brianzahnd.com/ Facebook: @Brian Zahnd Stay connected with Catherine: Catherinetoon.com FB: Catherine Toon, MD IG: @CatherineToon Watch on YouTube: Catherine Toon, MD (like & subscribe for more!)

    Brian Zahnd

    Brian Zahnd
It is apparent to most that the church in the West is at a tipping point. The faults and failures of what has come before have been laid bare in apocalyptic terms. Yet we know that from the ashes of frail human institutions God is able to birth something new, something vital. Part of what keeps me going is finding voices within the Christian household who can bring a vision of what comes next rather than simply joining in the rage and vitriol. What I hear time and again is the necessity of a dialogue between the liturgical/contemplative traditions that teach us an inner life of the Spirit, and the pentecostal or charismatic movements that champion an outward life of the Spirit. If we are to truly become faithful in our time we must learn to enter a total life of the Spirit, as people who are creating sanctuary in our innermost being to find grounding in God so we can then speak of a radically new way of enacting justice in the world as God’s kingdom. Brian Zahnd is a pastor in St. Joseph Missouri whom I trust to articulate the way to becoming a contemplative revolutionary. In our conversation, we discuss his journey from Zeppelin-loving Jesus freak to church-growth guru to contemplative pilgrim. We talk about the necessity of a prayer life that, patiently over time, shapes us to have a healthy detachment from the chaos and pain of the world, in order to offer a better more Christlike way.

Reconstruction: An Interview with Brad Jersak

Reconstruction: An Interview with Brad Jersak

Brad Jersak is an Eastern Orthodox theologian, author, and great friend of this podcast. Brad recently published a book called Out of the Embers: Faith After the Great Deconstruction. In this interview, we chat about what Brad calls the Great Deconstruction, the history and tradition of deconstruction within and outside of our faith tradition, why Brad is a devotee of Simone Weil, and how to move forward in your faith after deconstruction (if you can).

In this episode, we tasted Hooten Young's 6 Year Cabernet Cask Finished Whiskey from our friends at Story Hill BKC in Milwaukee, WI. Support is also in from Culver's Painting in Brookfield, WI.

Brian Zahnd on Discovering a Rich, Substantive Faith

Brian Zahnd on Discovering a Rich, Substantive Faith

Brain Zahnd is the founding pastor of Word of Life Church in Saint Joseph, Missouri and an author of multiple books. In this interview, Brian talked with us about his Christian journey so far, from finding faith in the Jesus Movement to his involvement in the Charismatic movement to the founding of Word of Life Church and then eventually to the radical and very public renovation of his faith in his 40s (before it was cool). In that process, he was accused of heresy and lost many members of his church. But he continues to press on, now a leading voice for people who cannot find a home in conservative evangelicalism or within liberal mainline communities. He's written several books including Water to Wine and Sinners in the Hand of a Loving God

His latest release is When Everything's on Fire: Faith Forged from the Ashes. If you or someone you know is struggling with their faith, then consider this book. It focuses on renovating faith in light of its historical and intellectual richness.

Chris Green and Kenneth Tanner thrashing it out

Dr. Chris Green thinks more deeply and more wonderfully on race, justice and pentecostalism than anyone you know. He is a prolific author and professor of Public Theology at Southeastern University. Rev. Kenneth Tanner is a priest, theologian, wise guide and kind colleague to many friends of Tent (including amongst others Brad Jersak and Brian Zahnd). Kenneth and Chris meet regularly for theological conversations, and were kind to allow Stephen to listen in and record. Along the way we talk about the incarnation, worship, reading, christendom, deconstruction, reconstruction and the deep goodness of Revelation.

Kathi and David Peters, directors of Postcards from Babylon

Kathi and David Peters, directors of Postcards from Babylon

Kathi and David Peters are Americans who grew up with impeccable conservative christian pedigrees. Yet somewhere along the line the wheels fell off their patriotic evangelical wagon and they had to learn a new Way. They are filmmakers and their latest work is "Postcards from Babylon", a documentary based on the book of the same name by Brian Zahnd. The film tackles head-on and close-up the reality of living as a follower of Jesus in the midst of a christian culture infatuated with proximity to power and hyper-partisan nationalism.
