john a. powell holds the Robert D. Haas Chancellor’s Chair in Equity and Inclusion; is a Professor of Law, African American Studies, and Ethnic Studies; and leads the Othering & Belonging Institute at the University of California, Berkeley. He tells Eboo why “bridging,” building connections with others, is the crucial, hard work of our time.

john a. powell (who spells his name in lowercase in the belief that we should be "part of the universe, not over it, as capitals signify") is an internationally recognized expert in the areas of civil rights, civil liberties, structural racism, housing, poverty, and democracy. He is the Director of the Othering & Belonging Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, and appears regularly in major media to offer expert insights on a host of issues.

What Nature Can Teach Us About Power with Larissa Conte

What Nature Can Teach Us About Power with Larissa Conte

#011 - Rites of passage guide Larissa Conte understands that humans are not separate from nature and brings this perspective into her work to bridge diverse worlds as an integrative systems coach, helping business leaders enhance their “power literacy” along the way. In this heart-centered conversation, we explore the art of transformation (aka living and dying), the difference between self-care and selfishness, the power of paying attention to subtle things, and the potential each of us has to be a healer.

Episode 214: Emin Gün Sirer on Avalanche and its Formation
This week Anna (https://twitter.com/AnnaRRose) chats with Emin Gün Sirer (https://twitter.com/el33th4xor) - CEO Ava Labs and Founder of Avalanche. They chat about the experiences that led him to become interested in distributed systems research and his work as a professor at Cornell that led to the development of Avalanche. They then dig into their novel consensus mechanism which uses the sub-sampling technique, the architecture of the network with the 3 distinct components: X-Chain, C-Chain and P-Chain, bridges and more. Bridging Service, led by Rev. Dr. Natalie Fenimore

It has been a year like none other for our children, youth, and families. Through this time of isolation, separation, anxiety, and zooming everything – our young people have also built determination, empathy, resilience, and a strong commitment to justice in the world. In the Bridging Worship Service on May 16, 2021, we recognized and celebrated our graduating High School seniors. Included were stories, readings, and reflections from Lifespan Religious Education Coordinator Carson Jones, Student Minister Alia Shinbrough, Senior Seminar Advisor Bill Carmody, and graduating members of the Senior Seminar youth group. Featuring music from the UUCSR Vocal Quartet, Jazz Ensemble, and a new recording from the Young People’s Choir conducted by RE Music Specialist George Weisman.

#4 Eva Cristina Pérez Ramos: Perfection doesn’t exist for a reason

#4 Eva Cristina Pérez Ramos: Perfection doesn’t exist for a reason

Eva Cristina Pérez Ramos was born and raised in Caracas, Venezuela. She grew up with big appreciation for some basic needs which are often taken for granted in the West, such as life security, food and water. Her appreciation for these basic needs and freedom in her life started expanding even more when she moved to Denmark, China and Spain. Living nowadays in Spain, facing the global pandemic, she still has great appreciation for the food that she can buy in the grocery store, even though she needs to stand in the line. While the public transport was partly shut down in Spain, she was grateful that she could walk to work without any insecurity or fear that something would happen to her. Here is a very special viewpoint of a strong woman who believes that perfection doesn’t exist for a reason. It’s up to us to appreciate life, accept things we cannot change, be courageous to change the things we can and contribute to the world.

    05: Objective-C Interoperability

    05: Objective-C Interoperability

There's been a much stronger focus on calling ObjC from Swift than the other way around, but in this talk we'll cover both directions and the parts of the Swift language involved in the process.

    ObjC Interop Overview

    • Nikita Lutsenko's talk: https://realm.io/news/altconf-nikita-lutsenko-objc-swift-interoperability/
      • NS_SWIFT_NAME
      • NS_SWIFT_UNAVAILABLE
      • NS_REFINED_FOR_SWIFT
      • NS_SWIFT_NOTHROW
      • NS_NOESCAPE
      • NSEXTENSIBLESTRING_ENUM
      • Nullability Annotations
      • Generic Annotations
    • ClangImporter (omit needless words logic lives here)
    • PrintAsObjC
      • Kevin Ballard's PR to include unavailable/deprecated/availability attributes: https://github.com/apple/swift/pull/6480
      • ObjC codegen via string manipulation. Very hackable.

    Proposals on ObjC Interop

    • Referencing ObjC key-paths: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0062-objc-keypaths.md
    • Referencing ObjC property selectors: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0064-property-selectors.md
    • Referencing ObjC selector of a method: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0022-objc-selectors.md
    • Great API transformation: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0005-objective-c-name-translation.md
    • Import ObjC constants: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0033-import-objc-constants.md
    • Make optional requirements ObjC only: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0070-optional-requirements.md

    04: Bridging with Objective-C

    04: Bridging with Objective-C

Swift has evolved since 1.x to have a fluctuating amount of magic/implicit bridging from ObjC and Foundation types, sometimes going in the opposite direction towards very explicit type conversions.

We've started seeing more of what the "steady state" looks like as Swift 3.x/4.x development matures.

In the early days, Swift users would need deep compiler internal implementation details to know which NSNumber-representable type could implicitly convert. As of SE-0139 that's a lot clearer.

The subtleties of unenforced protocol conformance semantics: https://oleb.net/blog/2016/12/protocols-have-semantics/

    Proposals on bridging

    • New from Doug Gregor, limiting @objc inference: https://github.com/DougGregor/swift-evolution/blob/objc-inference/proposals/NNNN-objc-inference.md
    • NSNumber and NSValue: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0139-bridge-nsnumber-and-nsvalue.md
    • Optional to payload or NSNull: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0140-bridge-optional-to-nsnull.md
    • ObjC lightweight generics: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0057-importing-objc-generics.md
    • Import id as Any: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0116-id-as-any.md
    • NSError bridging: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0112-nserror-bridging.md
    • Fully eliminate implicit bridging: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0072-eliminate-implicit-bridging-conversions.md
    • Remove bridging conversion behavior from dynamic casts: https://github.com/apple/swift-evolution/blob/master/proposals/0083-remove-bridging-from-dynamic-casts.md
    • Ole Begemann on "Protocols are more than Bags of Syntax": https://oleb.net/blog/2016/12/protocols-have-semantics/
    • No protocol for non-user constructable types (e.g. library-vendored types) :(
    • Conventions are useful, even if not for technical reasons. Case study with Realm trying to buck NSError ObjC conventions: https://github.com/realm/realm-cocoa/pull/1123
