Claire Glynn: The Search for Black Sam - the Richest Pirate of All-Time

Claire Glynn: The Search for Black Sam - the Richest Pirate of All-Time

The pirates of the 1700s  were democrats.
Their ships were crammed with men, and women, of all kinds of cultures.
    Many were former slaves.
    Others were indigenous natives.
Others were our fore-parents escaping a lifetime of servitude as agricultural serfs.

The pay level between a common sailor and a captain on a pirate ship was only twice as much. However, that pay could be massive. Edward "Black Beard" Teach was worth $12 million. Captain John Bowen, a Creole pirate was worth $40 million.  But the greatest of them all was Black Sam Bellamy - 300 years later, Forbes magazine would estimate that "Black Sam" was the richest pirate of all time.

And then "Black Sam" sailed into a dark and stormy night off the coast of Cape Cod and the legends began...

Episode 83: The Buried Treasure of Mabel Simpkins, Old School New England Convenience Stores, 90s Advertising Mascots, Dennis MA(9-1-2022)

Episode 83: The Buried Treasure of Mabel Simpkins, Old School New England Convenience Stores, 90s Advertising Mascots, Dennis MA(9-1-2022)

Episode 83 digs deep, both into the past and into the ground.
It begins with the strange but true story of buried treasure on Cape Cod.  Who was Mabel Simpkins-Agassiz, and what was the odd object she had buried on her property?  And how is that object still around today?
Next, is a Road Trip exploring one of the beautiful towns of Cape Cod.  Dennis, Massachusetts is dead center on the Cape and is home to miles of beaches, culture, arts, history, and naturally shopping and restaurants.  Find out more about what makes this town special and a must for any visit to Cape Cod.
We go way Back In the Day to look at some classic New England convenience stores of yesteryear.  Sure they may have all sold basically the same items but some of these names are sure to bring back fond memories of local kids from the 80s and 90s.  Before 7-Eleven and Cumberland Farms dominated the region there were other stalwarts.
The 90s spawned some memorable commercial advertising mascots.  This weeks Top 5 gives a spotlight back to some of those beloved characters that did their best to sell whatever product they were associated with.  How many of these will you remember?
There is also a brand new This Week In History and birthday-themed Time Capsule that looks back at the founding of Netflix.

Finders, Keepers? Who Owns Valuable Lost Property

Finders, Keepers? Who Owns Valuable Lost Property

Earlier this month, one very lucky man was told he would be allowed to keep half of a treasure trove of diamonds, emeralds and sapphires he'd found back in 2013 while hiking on Mont Blanc in France.

It's an incredible true story of buried treasure, but finding valuables on the street, beach or even within your own home is more common than you might think, so how do you know if you're allowed to keep them? And what happens if you're the one who lost the precious items in the first place?

The Quicky speaks to two legal and policing experts to find out if it really is a case of 'finders, keepers' when you discover valuables by chance, or if pocketing them instead of reporting it to the authorities could land you in some legally hot water.

The 1998 Death Of Horseshoe Casino Gambling Hall Heir Ted Binion

**The sound quality of the first couple dozen episodes of this show isn't good; I was still learning!!  Skip ahead about a year!  Also, KD is no longer a part of the Orbital Jigsaw Network or Blubrry**

On September 17, 1998, Horseshoe Casino Gambling Hall heir Ted Binion was found dead in his home.  At first glance, all indications at the scene pointed to an accidental overdose, as Ted was known to be a habitual heroin user.  But as they delved into Ted’s personal life, they came to find there were people in his close circle that may have wanted to see Ted dead.  Was this an accident?  A suicide?  Or a Homicide?
