How to Use the Principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Overcome Obstacles in Business and Life

How to Use the Principles of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to Overcome Obstacles in Business and Life

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, there are certain principles like timing, leverage, and positioning that practitioners must master to successfully overcome an opponent. My guest has found that these same principles that allow someone to be successful on the mat, also apply to being successful outside of it.

Rener Gracie is the co-owner and head instructor of Gracie University and the author of The 32 Principles: Harnessing the Power of Jiu-Jitsu to Succeed in Business, Relationships, and Life. Today on the show, Rener shares how he’s used some of the core teachings of jiu-jitsu, like the Pyramid Principle and the River Principle, in his business, and how you can use them to grapple with all kinds of obstacles in life.

RANT: Why ‘Focus on ONE Thing to be Successful’ is Wrong. Do this instead.. [Business, mindset, entrepreneur, disruptors]

In any one moment you can only do one thing, which is the reasoning behind ‘focus on one task’ but you should never just focus on one business model!

In this episode Rob explores the idea of diversifying your business and why ‘focus on one thing’ is out of date advice and can actually be dangerous.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

    • We are now in a decentralised economy, we are also decentralised in media forms, this is disrupting big business and institutions.
    • Rob uses his 70, 20, 10 model to diversify his business. This is how to balance your tasks, business and things you do. Spend 70% on the main task, 20% on your secondary business and 10% on your new future business. Then you can start to systemise these things so that you can then look at something new.

    • There is no such thing as multitasking successfully. You can ‘net time’, for example leveraging one piece of content for multiple platforms, but you cannot multitask and focus on multiple things at the same time.

Zack Kanter – All Things Business - [Invest Like the Best, EP.142]

Zack Kanter – All Things Business - [Invest Like the Best, EP.142]
This week’s guest is, Zack Kanter, the founder and CEO of the Stedi.  Zack and I decided not to talk much about his business on this podcast and opted instead to explore more generally, so a bit of an introduction to what they do may be helpful here for some extra context. Stedi is a platform for exchanging and automating 300+ types of business-to-business transactions - transactions like purchase orders, invoices, etc. It’s a modern take on an archaic protocol called EDI - electronic data interchange, something I’d never even heard of until several months ago. Learning about EDI is a bit like finding out about the Matrix - every physical object you come across, from the food you ate for breakfast to the clothes you’re wearing and consumer electronics you use - anything with a barcode on it - was likely touched by EDI, often dozens of times before making it into your hands. Stedi is the first update to this messaging later in decades. Our conversation in this podcast is about business in general, starting with Zack’s fascination with Walmart and Amazon. I should also not that my family is a recent investor in Stedi, and I’m thankful to have learned a great deal from him over the past few months. Please enjoy our conversation.  For more episodes go to InvestorFieldGuide.com/podcast.
