Camp Cope
For eight years Camp Cope shook up the Australian music industry with their fearless anthems, raw punk rock and stand against sexism and harassment.Â
After three albums, countless live shows and a music industry forever changed by their advocacy, Georgia Maq, Sarah Thompson and Kelly-Dawn Hellmrich have decided to call it a day.
This episode of The J Files celebrates this trailblazing band and their legacy. It features one of their last ever interviews, reflections from fans at their final Sydney Opera House show and from musicians like Teenage Joans, Jen Cloher and Ben Lee.
The Chicks
In the late 90s and early 2000s The Chicks (formerly The Dixie Chicks) were the biggest selling female group in the U.Sâselling tens of millions of records and changing the face of country music.
The trio werenât afraid to do things their own wayâmaintaining independence from their label and speaking out about social justice issues. But their comments about George W. Bush at the height of the Iraq War in 2003 saw them blacklisted from country radio stations, receive death threats, have their CDs burnt in public and their songs tumble from the charts.Â
Theyâve regrouped, renamed and have come back fighting. Get the full story of the rise, fall, and rise again, of The Chicks ahead of their Australian tour.
Featuring stories and reflections from Chicks fans Tami Neilson, Freya Josephine Hollick, Fanny Lumsden, Georgia Maq and more.
EP 7: Interview w. Musician & Nurse, Georgia Maq
In this episode, I talk with all-round legend and creative powerhouse Georgia Maq. This episode covers all things feminism, music, her journey as a nurse, healing, the current issues within the Australian music industry and what's next for Georgia now that Camp Cope has announced it's split.
Massive apology for my terrible audio, but we can hear Gee so that is all that matters.
About Georgia Maq: (Bio from Amrap)
Georgia McDonald has established herself in recent years as the singer and guitarist of Melbourne, Australia indie rock band Camp Cope, whose sophomore album How to Socialise and Make Friends (Run For Cover/Poison City Records) won widespread acclaim, topping a slew of 2018 end of year lists including NPR, Pitchfork, Billboard, Bandcamp, Stereogum, The Guardian, and Brooklyn Vegan.
The impact of the trio's music on the indie landscape has been undeniable, with McDonald emerging as a brave, resilient, and often politicised figure. Using her formidable voice to fight for the betterment of the music industry and rally against sexism, racism and all forms of structural inequality, she has never shied away from the uncomfortable and difficult topics that dominate the news cycle.

Camp Cope provide a lesson in finding comfort
“Gorgeously restrained and gentle” is probably not a phrase that would have been used to describe our guest a few years ago.
Melbourne’s Camp Cope made their name with scorching records like their debut self-titled and 2018’s How to Socialise and Make Friends – they were albums that railed, with fury and passion, against the sexism and inequality that exists within Australia.
On their new album, Running with the Hurricane, the trio – which consists of Georgia Maq, Kelly-Dawn Helmrich, and Sarah Thompson – changed tack a bit, switching out the punk fury for gorgeous alt-country.
It’s a moving listen from one of Australia’s best bands The Tuckshop were excited to welcome back Kelly to tell us all about it!

Camp Cope Return Out Of The ‘Blue’
Camp Cope returned this week with a brand new single after three and a half years away – although, of course, they didn’t really go away. Singer Georgia Maq recorded a solo album, Pleaser, and she and bassist Kelly-Dawn linked up for a project called The Garageband Split back in 2020.
But the track Blue officially marks the return of Camp Cope. Bassist, Kelly-Dawn Helmrich, joined The Tuckshop to chat through how it all came together and what’s coming soon!

Episode 8: We Could Be Cousins feat. Georgia Maq from Camp Cope
Georgia Maq from Camp Cope comes in hot to discuss a range of topics including white supremacy, diversity in music, Todd’s psycho bed and why she thinks our podcast is boring.
Big shout out to Georgia.
