THEIR STORIES #14 - Their 'New Normal,' Before & After

THEIR STORIES #14 - Their 'New Normal,' Before & After

With any life altering event, there’s always a before and an after.  And the ‘after’ becomes just normal life.  But when that life altering event is a tragedy of sorts, the ‘after’ becomes your ‘new normal.’ No one CHOOSES cancer.  This is our new normal, because we didn’t choose it.  It happened to us.  But it’s in the after that we do choose how we let it affect us, and how we affect others.

    Goodbye to 2020!

    Goodbye to 2020!

As we close out 2020, I want to take time in this week’s episode to simply say thanks.  So many others lived through more hardships, tragedies and losses, this year than I think any other year.  And to add the effects of a pandemic on top of that?  Just like cancer, the pandemic affects everyone.

So goodbye to 2020.  And hello 2021.  We welcome you with open arms.

THEIR STORIES #11 - Asking For Help

Just in time for Thanksgiving, a time when we need to thank everyone who came to us, our families and friends, when we needed it most.  Our brave 15 once again, tell us how difficult, and sometimes very easy, it was (still is) to simply ask for help.

    THEIR STORIES #9 - Mary's Story

Mary is a Broadway actor & dancer, as well as a director, choreographer and teacher.  Needless to say that she knows her body.  So when her doctor continued to dismiss her when she had discovered some not so normal symptoms in her breast, she knew it wasn’t normal and didn’t settle for ‘your scans look fine.’  And because she didn’t settle, she caught her cancer before it spread and became much worse than it was.

    THEIR STORIES #8 - Caryn's Story

Caryn was a newlywed when she first discovered that she had stage 2 breast cancer.  After treatment, which included a double mastectomy and chemotherapy, she was able to have a baby that she and her husband always wanted.  Then nine years after she completed treatment, she discovered that her cancer had metastasized.  For the past seven years, she is thriving.  She created an entire wellness program, Pretty Wellness.  She wrote a book and has her own podcast, Happiness Through Hardship.  Needless to say, Caryn is living her best life.

You can follow Caryn Sullivan, a two-time cancer survivor, founder of Pretty Wellness, on facebook, instagram and twitter at PrettyWellness or even better, go to her website at PrettyWellness.com.  You can read her book Happiness Through Hardship or subscribe and listen to her podcast with the same name.

MY STORY #12 - When Cancer Comes Back

MY STORY #12 - When Cancer Comes Back

For nearly 8 years, I had check-ups, mostly blood work, very few scans. But I admit, throughout those years, I sometimes felt a bit invincible.  One in eight women get cancer, but 30% of that have a reoccurrence.  Finding out my cancer had metastasized to my spine at the height of the pandemic in New York City did not make me feel invincible.  It was however a way for me to have yet again a new perspective on life, as if I needed one.  AND I don’t have to pick up heavy shit anymore.

Jennifer is an acupuncturist, mom of two, who had a lumpectomy and then four years later had a reoccurrence and then had a single mastectomy.  But her daughter understands it as ‘it’s not the cancer that can kill you like mine almost did.’  We each have our own stories of cancer, and this is Jennifer’s.

MY STORY #10 - MRIs & PET scans

MY STORY #9 - Telling My Story

MY STORY #9 - Telling My Story

As I’ve mentioned before, there’s no right way to tell folks you have cancer.  I wanted to be in control of my story, so that if anyone had any questions about what was happening to me, well, they could simply read the truth for themselves.  We all tell our stories in different ways, because they are just that – OUR STORIES.

BONUS:  At the end of the episode, listen to Baby Goes Bang’s THIS SONG (cello by Julia Rogers), which is featured throughout the podcast.

MY STORY #8 - Meeting Dr. Breast

In choosing my doctor, I knew I needed someone that would take the bull by the horns, and take care of the situation, with all the confidence and expertise that was necessary.  I knew I needed someone who would answer my questions, no matter if I thought they were silly or stupid or not.  I knew I needed someone that also was extremely thorough.  And while I always suggest to others to get a second opinion, I never did.  Because I truly felt confident and comfortable with Dr. Breast.

MY STORY #5: Finding Out I Had Cancer

When you give bad news, you have to dig deep, stay calm, cool-headed and just rip off that band-aid.  HEARING bad news, well, it just means that you’re left with what’s underneath that band-aid.  Something that, in the instant moment in which its last grip is pulled, actually changes your life forever.

    MY STORY #4: Biopsies...wait, what?

Over the course of an hour, 22 needles went in and out of my body. Tissue was cut, torn and pulled from my body to be tested and examined, and then probably reexamined, to see if I had cancer.  All while life goes on – neighborhood picnics, putting the twins to bed, visiting family – and all the while waiting to know if I have cancer or not.
