Turning Pain Into a Platform with Fitz Koehler

I'm thrilled to share with you the highlights of my recent Uncensored Advice for Men episode where I had the pleasure of interviewing Fitz Koehler, a fitness expert, author, and cancer survivor. Her story is one of resilience, positivity, and an unyielding spirit that I believe will inspire you.

    1. Fitz's Journey with Cancer: Fitz opened up about her battle with breast cancer, sharing the whirlwind of treatments and appointments that followed her diagnosis. She emphasized the loneliness that comes with the journey, but also the importance of having supportive loved ones by your side.
    2. Supporting Loved Ones with Cancer: Fitz highlighted the significance of being proactive in our support for those battling cancer. She encouraged listeners to offer help, even if it's not explicitly asked for, and to be a beacon of positivity.
    3. Facing Fear: Fitz shared her perspective on fear, encouraging us not to let it hold us back from living our lives to the fullest. She shared a personal story about overcoming her fear, which led to her mantra: go for anything that doesn't cause physical harm.
    4. Public Speaking and Connecting with People: Fitz shared her experience as a public speaker and how she prepares for her keynotes. She emphasized the importance of storytelling and preparation, and how connecting with people energizes her the most.
    5. Living Better and Longer: In her podcast, The Fitness Show, Fitz discusses various topics with the main theme being living better and longer. She encourages listeners to prioritize their health and make positive changes in their lifestyle.
    6. Being Unstoppable: Fitz believes that by pairing a healthy body with a healthy mind, we can become unstoppable and achieve everything we want in life. She suggests aiming to be 1% better each day and starting small.

I'm sure you'll find Fitz's story as inspiring as I did!

    Breast Cancer is a beast.

    Breast Cancer is a beast.

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It is great to have a month that highlights a disease, and brings awareness about prevention, treatment and survival. The fact remains that one out of every 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. CT Paid Leave gives up to 12 weeks of income replacement, so you can take time away from work to deal with your own serious health condition or that of a loved one. This allows you to focus on your diagnosis, treatment plan and healing and not worry about your finances.

The expert on this topic is breast surgeon Dr. Kertrisa McWhite. She is a fellowship-trained breast surgeon at the Middlesex Health Surgical Alliance and the Comprehensive Breast Center. She talks about prevention, screenings and how treatments have improved survival rates even in the last 10 years. She talks about why it's important to have a good support system with a diagnosis and to seek behavioral health professionals if you need to.  She is hopeful that there will one day be a cure for breast cancer.

    THEIR STORIES #19 - Allyson's Story

Before Allyson found her cancer, she was actually getting regular mammograms for four years.  However her cancer was found because she felt a pain in her breast, right where her underwire bra fit, and knew that it wasn’t right.  Her doctor swore it was nothing, most likely due to the fact that she was getting those regular mammograms.  But she was diagnosed with DCIS.   She was that RARE form of DCIS.  While DCIS is now found far more frequently because of mammograms, hers wasn’t found by mammogram, but found by that pain.  Correction – it was found by her listening to her body, and trusting her instincts.

Surgery Decisions and Preparing for a Mastectomy

Surgery Decisions and Preparing for a Mastectomy

The journey from biopsy to surgery is an extremely stressful and uncertain time.  Deciding between lumpectomy and mastectomy will depend on the clinical pathology resulting from your biopsy, and more information and further tests may be needed before reaching a final decision.  Organizing your surgery team if mastectomy is needed will require coordination between a breast surgeon and plastic surgeon.  Preparing for a mastectomy is not only psychologically challenging, but preparing for the physical challenges will help with the recovery phase following surgery.  Helpful suggestions of items that can help with comfort during recovery is discussed.

    THEIR STORIES #9 - Mary's Story

Mary is a Broadway actor & dancer, as well as a director, choreographer and teacher.  Needless to say that she knows her body.  So when her doctor continued to dismiss her when she had discovered some not so normal symptoms in her breast, she knew it wasn’t normal and didn’t settle for ‘your scans look fine.’  And because she didn’t settle, she caught her cancer before it spread and became much worse than it was.
