Michael Bakas | The essential role of RNG in the energy transition

Michael Bakas | The essential role of RNG in the energy transition

Every community across the globe produces waste. This waste can come from landfills, decomposing food, animal manure, and wastewater sludge. As this waste decomposes, it emits natural gas – primarily composed of methane, which is a naturally occurring but very potent and harmful greenhouse gas. In fact, methane is nearly 30 times more potent at trapping heat in our atmosphere than carbon dioxide. Renewable Natural Gas (RNG) projects capture this methane before it harms our environment and repurposes it to create clean and reliable energy that is used to generate electricity, power our vehicles, heat our homes, cook our food, and many other productive purposes. In this episode, Chad and Gil speak with Michael Bakas, Executive Vice President at Ameresco, a leading cleantech integrator specializing in energy efficiency and renewable energy. Michael details the various RNG production pathways and revenue streams, discusses his views on RNG market growth drivers, and makes a compelling case for the essential role of RNG in the energy transition.

Guest: Jason Haith of OEC Group on evolving freight markets; Railroads sue California over new locomotive regulations; and changing warehouse workforce dynamics

Our guest on this week's episode is Jason Haith, branch manager of OEC Group's Louisville office. Anyone who has followed freight markets over the past year is well aware that they have undergone drastic changes.  These changes make it harder for both shippers and carriers to decide what is fair pricing as they move to sign new contracts and to find carriage on the spot markets. As a seasoned analyst of logistics markets, Haith provides insights on what to expect for the remainder of the year and what early next year may look like in freight offerings.

The State of California has created a rule that would require switch, industrial, and passenger locomotives built in 2030 or after to operate in zero-emissions mode while in California, and in 2035 or after for freight line haul. It would also set a 30-minute idling limit for locomotives in the state and would require railroads to set aside funds to upgrade to cleaner locomotive technologies. Railroad groups are suing the state over these new regulations, saying the technology that California requires isn't really even available yet. We discuss the requirements and their implications for the rail industry.

With low unemployment rates continuing, operators of warehouses and distribution centers are finding it harder than ever to find good workers. New research is showing what it may take to attract new workers while retaining current staff.

    Water and Energy Regulatory Update

    Water and Energy Regulatory Update

On Episode 25 of the TID Water & Power Podcast we sit down with TID Regulatory Analysts, Herb Smart and Austin Avery, to discuss the regulatory process.

We know how bills become laws, but what happens next? The law then goes through a regulatory process that determines HOW it will be implemented. Tasked with tracking this process and the potential positive and negative impacts of each regulation are TID’s Regulatory Analysts, who are working to ensure the District, and its customers, are protected from unfair regulations.

On this episode we discuss the role of a regulatory analyst, how regulations and the regulatory process impact the District, and some of the key regulatory proceedings they are tracking now.

Jim Cooper: California's Natural Gas Bans

California Assemblyman Jim Cooper, a Democrat from Elk Grove, has become a harsh critic of his state’s energy and climate policies. In this episode, Robert talks to Cooper (who was a guest on the podcast in September) about the regressive nature of California’s decarbonization efforts, the Sierra Club’s campaign to ban the use of  natural gas, and what he calls the “deliberate indifference” of climate activists to the needs of low- and middle-income Americans.

Fleet management and Electric Vehicles - a chat with Amply Power's Simon Lonsdale

Fleet management and Electric Vehicles - a chat with Amply Power's Simon Lonsdale

On this episode of the Digital Supply Chain podcast, I spoke with Simon Lonsdale, co-founder and head of sales and strategy for Amply Power (@AmplyPower on Twitter). Amply is a US based company in the commercial fleet space, specialising in managing the fuelling of electric vehicles (be they cars, vans, trucks, buses, or any other type of commercial electric vehicle).

Simon spoke about how Amply's business model is a pay per mile driven one, how Amply can help its customers drive down the cost of transportation for organisations by intelligently managing the charging of its electric vehicles, demand side management, and where available applying carbon credits to the electricity used for the vehicles.

We had a fascinating conversation, and I particularly liked Simon's point near the end about the extra value Amply can bring its customers, by unlocking the feeling data. Something not available for users of internal combustion engines - listen for yourselves, and let me know what you think.

    Natural Remedies For Altitude Sickness

Jenny says: She's from Indiana. She's a fit and active 52 year old woman that lives 500ft above sea level. Her husband and her are planning a backpacking trip to Yellowstone this fall and she'll be hiking at 6000ft - 8000. Her concern is elevation sickness. She's snow skied out west before and she's experienced that horrible that headache and nausea feeling that comes with it and she's wondering if you have any tips for how to avoid altitude sickness and get used to working out?

In my response, I recommend: -Garlic/lavender/clove essential oils -Gingko Biloba -TianChi -Coca leaves Everything You Need To Know About Muscle Cramping

Her husband gets terrible cramps and they can occur at any time, like during runs over 12K and during the day, but they mostly occur at night. He takes magnesium and camp bark formula two times per day and magnesium forte. They've tried so many things but nothing seems to work. He rolls, stretches, doesn't relax etc, his mum had this issue and they both have blue feet. She may well have missed something you've already written about it but she can't find it.

In my response, I recommend: -This podcast on muscle cramping How To Cycle Your Calories & Carbs

He's wondering if he works out everyday and he's anywhere between 500-1000 cal deficit is that safe and OK to do, how long of a time period can he go that way? He only has 5-10 pounds to lose but he's really working on endurance, muscle strength and so forth.

In my response, I recommend: -GetFitGuy.com The 5 Best Books For Power & Strength

Chia Seeds vs. Flax Seeds (And The Truth About Flax, Chia & Estrogen)

Brock says: What's your take on the Chia/Flaxseed phyto-estrogen thing that a lot of people have been taking about? Flax are apparently extremely high in phyto-estrogen and Chia seeds are getting a bad rap. Both of them are things you recommend in the past, not in huge quantities, but is there anything he should be worried about?

...and sometimes not just for breakfast, but multiple times during the day, especially on busy days. Heck, there's been occasional days where I have had a shake for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

You’ll need a powerful blender for this one. Take a couple large handfuls of kale (preferably dinosaur kale that's been lightly steamed and drained), and toss the kale into the blender. Then add a handful of raw almonds, 3-5 raw brazil nuts (purchased in the shell, like this), 1/2-1 avocado, a teaspoon cinnamon, 1-2 tablespoons dark chocolate powder and 4-6oz full fat coconut milk (preferably the BPA free variety like this). I'll often also add in a handful of fresh herbs (i.e. mint, cilantro, parsley, oregano, etc. – which are fantastic for cleansing the gut and liver too).

    Then push blend.

After 30-60 seconds of pulverizing, you can stir in 1-2 heaping scoops grass-fed, cold-processed whey or vegan protein powder and for a bit of added texture (yes, I like to chew my smoothie for better nutrient absorption), 1 teaspoon sea salt (I highly recommend this Aztecan stuff), and a handful of unsweetened coconut flakes with a tablespoon or two of organic cacao nibs.

    It tastes magical.

And this recipe has never ripped me out of ketosis - despite it being a good 800-1000 calories if you make a big one! Here’s a video of me punishing the process of gracefully making a variation of that Ketogenic Kale Shake.

Now that shake is certainly a good example of a high-fat, low-carb meal that keeps you in ketosis - and I discuss the benefits of ketosis in Chapter 14 of my book "Beyond Training. But perhaps more importantly, the shake is also extremely nutrient dense, a characteristic of low-carb meals that is often lost in an era of simply guzzling MCT Oil or consuming insane amounts of heavy cream and butter. Lack of nutrient density is one serious danger of ketosis, and my guest on today's podcast is going to explain why that is, tell you the best way to achieve ketosis, and also give you the best nutrient dense foods that you must include on a ketogenic diet if you truly want to optimize your vitamins, minerals, nutrients, micronutrients and hormones. Her name is Dr. Terry Wahls. Dr. Wahls is a board certified internal medicine physician and clinical professor of medicine at the University of Iowa, where she teaches internal medicine residents in their primary care continuity of care clinics, sees patients in a traumatic brain injury clinic and conducts clinical trials. But she is also a patient with a chronic progressive neurological disorder - secondary progressive multiple sclerosis - which confined her to a tilt-recline wheelchair for four years. But during this time, Dr. Wahls did not give up. Instead she began reading the medical literature night after night, looking for her own answers about what drove disability in the setting of MS. She delved into the latest research on autoimmune disease and brain biology, and decided to get her vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and essential fatty acids from the food she ate rather than pills and supplements. Dr. Wahls adopted a nutrient-rich Paleo diet, gradually refining and integrating it into a regimen of rich nourishing foods, neuromuscular stimulation, and the spin on a ketogenic diet that you're going to discover in this podcast. And amazingly, she healed herself. First, she walked slowly, then steadily, and then she biked eighteen miles in a single day. In November 2011, Dr. Wahls shared her remarkable recovery in this "Minding Your Mitochondria" TEDx talk that immediately went viral. Now, in her new book "The Wahl's Protocol", Terry shares the exact details of the protocol that allowed her to reverse many of her symptoms, get back to her life, and embark on a new mission: to share the her protocol with others suffering from the ravages of multiple sclerosis and autoimmune and chronic diseases, but also people who simply want to maximize their performance, health and longevity. During our interview, you'll find out:

-The science of why ketosis works for things like nervous system disorders, improving physical endurance, or healing the body.

-How Terry used a ketogenic diet during her healing journey.

-Why Terry need to modify the ketogenic diet, and what some of the potential dangers of a ketogenic diet actually are.

-A "day in the life" of nutrient dense eating for ketosis.

-The most important things to measure if you're going to do ketosis.
