    Crbnly tackles Carbon Capture

In this episode of Crbnly Conversations, the hosts delve into the significance of carbon capture, contemplating its potential as a real-world solution rather than a sci-fi concept. The discussion encompasses various carbon capture methods and explores the business dynamics, particularly the sale of carbon credits. The episode concludes by prompting listeners to consider whether they would actively choose products manufactured using captured carbon.

From Methane to Minerals: The Pioneering Path to Carbon-Negative Energy

From Methane to Minerals: The Pioneering Path to Carbon-Negative Energy

Welcome to another enlightening episode of the Climate Confident Podcast. Today I have the pleasure of diving deep into the world of carbon-negative hydrogen with Arnaud Lager, the Founder and CEO of Decahydron.

Arnaud brought to light some groundbreaking work his team is doing in Ra's al Khaimah, UAE. They're not just creating hydrogen; they're doing it in a way that actively reduces carbon emissions. The magic happens through a unique process where methane is cracked to produce hydrogen, coupled with capturing CO2 from local cement industries. But here's the clincher – this CO2 isn't just captured; it's transformed into carbonate minerals by being injected into ultramafic rocks, ensuring it's locked away permanently.

We also explored the fascinating potential of natural hydrogen reserves in the region. Imagine, hydrogen bubbling up from the ground – it's not science fiction but a reality that could revolutionize our energy landscape. Decahydron's pursuit of this untapped resource could be a game-changer, offering a more sustainable and cost-effective hydrogen source.

But it's not all about hydrogen. Arnaud and his team have set ambitious goals for CO2 sequestration, aiming to tackle gigatons of emissions. Their approach is pragmatic yet innovative, focusing first on high-concentration CO2 sources before venturing into more dilute areas like direct air capture.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the cutting-edge of climate technology and sustainable energy. Arnaud's insights offer a glimpse into a future where energy production and environmental stewardship can go hand in hand.

Stay tuned for more updates on Decahydron's progress and do check out their website for the latest news. Remember, tackling climate change requires a variety of approaches, and it's pioneers like Arnaud who are leading the charge.

George Reed: Invisible MOOP and the Net-Zero

We committed to be carbon-negative by 2030. How will we do it? We have “Burning” right in our name.

When it comes to solar, biofuels, and energy banks, we have many irons in the fire, or rather, we are planting many seeds. Hear how Black Rock City is a hotbed, or rather, a garden bed, for the innovation of clean energy.

Stuart talks with George B Reed III, Associate Director of Burning Man Project’s Off Fossil Fuels program about the progress we’re making for a brighter future, or rather... yeah, a brighter future.

George shares what Burning Man’s leadership has been developing to be in integrity with our principles, from composting organic waste for food cultivation, to making renewable diesel from captured carbon. He shares stories of our community preventing and reversing damage to the climate.

Hear how we’re collectively rewiring reality, showing our work, and sharing what we know. Here’s how you can do it for your camp, your cohort, your city.

A Concrete Solution to Sequestering Carbon: An Interview with CarbiCrete

A Concrete Solution to Sequestering Carbon: An Interview with CarbiCrete

Did you know that concrete is responsible for about 8% of global carbon dioxide emissions, more than double those from aviation.

On this week’s podcast, Chris Stern the Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder at CarbiCrete introduces a made-in-Canada solution for addressing part of concrete’s greenhouse gas problem.  His company has developed a carbon-negative technology for producing precast concrete.  The precast market makes up about 30 percent of the total market for concrete.

Here are some of the questions that Jackie and Peter asked Chris Stern: How much concrete does the world use each year? How are carbon dioxide emissions created in the production of traditional concrete and how can they be reduced? How is CarbiCrete’s product made?  How is CarbiCrete’s product carbon-negative? Do you receive carbon credits for removing emissions?   How long has it taken to develop your concrete process so far? Are customers concerned about the durability when new concrete mixes and processes are introduced?

Green EV Batteries From Indonesia (Is This a Joke?) with Chris Gower of Altilium

Green EV Batteries From Indonesia (Is This a Joke?) with Chris Gower of Altilium

The Holy Grail of electric-vehicle production is a nickel battery derived from a genuinely green process, from mining through hydrometallurgy to handling residual tailings.  Indonesia holds the bulk of the world's nickel -- but its current and planned projects for refining ore into battery-grade material (or 'MHP') are anything but green.  These use conventional high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL), which entails high costs, acidic gases, and vast tailings.  Indonesia's current trajectory points to the exclusion of its battery material from key markets (EU, US, et al) where regulators and consumers will demand high standards.  But at least one company, Altilium, offers something completely different: an economical way to process ore into MHP -- with over 95 percent acid recycling and zero leftover tailings.  Paired with renewable energy, the prospect exists for carbon-neutral battery production.  Could it work, at scale?  In this episode of Reformasi Dispatch, Jakarta-based Altilium CEO and Monty Python aficionado Chris Gower responds to our (Spanish) inquisition.

BCG's path to net zero - a chat with Michel Frédeau and Daniel Weise

Boston Consulting Group is one of the most prestigious management consulting firms in the world.

In September 2020 BCG committed to going Net Zero by 2030, and carbon negative thereafter. And they are committing "$400 million over the next decade to enable BCG teams to drive climate and environmental impact across industries and countries".

Then in late January of this year (2021) BCG CEO Rich Lesser wrote a post on the World Economic Forum blog titled "Supply chains can be a climate game-changer. Here's why"

Intrigued and wanting to know more, I reached out to Michel Frédeau and Daniel Weise at BCG. Michel is a Managing Director and Senior Partner at BCG and is their Global Leader, Climate & Environment. While Daniel, a Managing Director and Partner is BCG's Global Topic Leader Procurement.

We had an excellent wide-ranging conversation covering not just BCG's Net Zero commitments, but also how they help their clients with their carbon commitments.

As you can probably tell, I thoroughly enjoyed our conversation. I hope you enjoy listening to it too.

Microsoft's incredibly ambitious climate emissions initiative - a chat with Lucas Joppa

Microsoft's incredibly ambitious climate emissions initiative - a chat with Lucas Joppa

Microsoft has a stellar track record when it comes to climate emissions. Microsoft rolled out an internal price on carbon in 2012 - something most major companies today have yet to do.

And in January 2020 Microsoft announced its plan to become carbon negative by 2030, and by 2050 to remove from the atmosphere all the carbon Microsoft has been responsible for emitting since it began operations in 1975.

Given these audacious commitments, and the stated aim of this podcast to share successful climate emissions strategies and stories, I reached out to Microsoft to ask if their Chief Environmental Officer Lucas Joppa (@lucasjoppa on Twitter) would come on the podcast to share some of their thinking. Fortunately, he agreed to, and here we are!
