Loyalty and Culture with Hollie Castro

Loyalty and Culture with Hollie Castro

In this curated episode of the Revenue Builders Podcast, we engage in an insightful conversation with Hollie Castro, a seasoned Chief People Officer and business transformation leader. Hollie delves into the evolving landscape of loyalty in the workforce, dissecting changing career expectations, motivations behind career transitions, and the shifting definitions of loyalty across different life stages. Holly shares invaluable insights on redefining loyalty in the modern workplace, emphasizing the importance of mindset shifts and transparent conversations between leaders and their teams.

    KEY TAKEAWAYS

[00:00:52] Traditional career longevity is evolving; individuals are more inclined to pursue diverse career paths, influenced by factors like peer comparison, financial gains, and personal growth.
[00:01:44] Different life stages dictate varied motivations for career changes. Social media plays a pivotal role in shaping individuals' perceptions of success.
[00:03:01] Loyalty remains a fundamental concept, but the expression and expectations surrounding loyalty have transformed over time. Leaders must adapt to the changing dynamics of employee loyalty.
[00:04:49] A shift in mindset is crucial. Loyalty doesn't necessarily equate to lifelong commitment; it involves honest conversations and continuous re-recruitment efforts.
[00:06:28] How employees exit a company is as vital as their contributions while working there. Leaving transparently and with a positive plan benefits both the departing individual and the organization.
[00:08:25] The world is smaller than perceived; leaving a positive legacy matters, as personal reputations endure through professional connections and references.

    HIGHLIGHT QUOTES

[00:01:18] "Social media is a powerful force. So when they perceive their peer group to be, you know, making more money or having a bigger title, that has a huge influence on how they think about themselves."
[00:04:49] "Loyalty means something different... It's more about having an honest conversation. Somebody's going to leave. Who's going to leave? What do we need to do to re-recruit them?"
[00:06:54] "How you leave is more important than actually everything you did because it's the only thing people will remember about you."
[00:07:42] "At some point, you're going to quit a job. And when you do that, how you do it... are you going to be a pro or are you going to be a loser?"

E235: Eric Nehrlich - Reconnecting with Purpose

    In Eric's Words:

I used to be miserable. I had spent my whole life exceeding expectations, and eventually landed a dream job at Google, tasked with responsibilities that felt so important that I could not fail. But a couple years later, I was working 8am to midnight every day, including most weekends, drowning in emails and meetings and tasks, feeling stuck with no idea how my life was ever going to change. Now my work is meaningful and inspiring to me, and I work when I choose. I spend quality time with my family, while still having time for my own pursuits. I am designing my own life, day by day, to create impact in alignment with my values. What changed? I realized I had a choice. I could keep going as I had been, letting my success be defined by the expectations of others. Or I could find a new path, one where I chose my own success. As part of redesigning my life, I became an executive coach, helping leaders grow their impact by sharing the principles and mindsets that I had used to change my own life. In November of 2023, I published a book, You Have A Choice: Beyond Hard Work to Meaningful Impact, to share that approach with a wider audience and help others start on their own journey of discovery and creation.

In conversation with Jaspreet Bindra: Can generative AI serve a greater purpose by being a public good?
Jaspreet Bindra has for long donned a corporate cap. Now, as a consultant, Bindra — who goes as the tech ‘whisperer’ — dons a surprisingly evocative persona. I key takeaway from this rather intriguing conversation comes from Bindra’s rather interesting take on the modern definition of work — and inevitably, the role of AI in all of our lives. Mint’s Shouvik Das joins Bindra in a prolific conversation on being a student at the end of career, on generative AI’s greater purpose, and if he thinks that AI will one day kill us all.

My Instincts Led Me Here | Ebehi Ijewere, Host of Layers of Design

My Instincts Led Me Here | Ebehi Ijewere, Host of Layers of Design

The career path of Ebehi Ijewere has not been easy, however—by trusting her instincts—Ebehi has found herself as an architect at Jacobs and host of the Layers of Design podcast. Ebehi grew up in Lagos, Nigeria where her creative influences were her mother and aunt who was an architect. These influences pushed her to move to the U.S. at the age of 17 for college.

Being an international student presented itself as a bit of a barrier after college as Ebehi applied for jobs. This led her to feel alone, but it also encouraged her to search for others having similar struggles. Finally through a connection, Ebehi landed her first job in architecture, but it never seemed fulfilling. Ebehi realized she wanted more than just any architecture job—she wanted one that truly valued her contributions.

This led her to rely heavily on her instincts—not being afraid to leave jobs that don't seem to be the right fit. It's admirable when people recognize a particular job is not enriching them and have the courage to move on. This is what led her to Jacobs, into a role where she truly feels valued. Ebehi encourages others not to ignore that feeling when "something isn't working."

Ebehi's story is an important reminder that you must seek out work cultures that empower you.

Embracing Fear: Unlocking Secrets for a Joyful & Fulfilling Life with Matan Cohen-Citron S4E35

Embracing Fear: Unlocking Secrets for a Joyful & Fulfilling Life with Matan Cohen-Citron S4E35

Does this sound familiar? You've been told to work harder and longer hours, sacrificing your own happiness and fulfillment in the pursuit of success. But despite your efforts, you still feel a sense of emptiness, dissatisfaction, and burnout. It's time to break free from the ineffective action of chasing external validation and instead focus on pursuing joy and passion. By prioritizing what truly ignites your soul, you can finally experience the happiness and fulfillment you've been longing for.

"Fear is a healthy body function, it's supposed to keep us safe. There is a difference between being fearful and being cautious." - Matan Cohen-Citron

In this episode, you will be able to:

    • Immerse yourself in the compelling reasons why mindfulness and activity should be part of your everyday life.
    • Transform your fear into a catalyst for your growth and development.
    • Comprehend the undoubtedly consequential link between your mental and physical self and its bearing on your health.
    • Venture into the realm of passion-driven work and find your true joy.
    • Incorporate bite-sized, yet impactful, steps towards a more enriched and fulfilled life.

    Moving Through Fear
Most of us perceive fear as a hurdle, an emotion to be quashed. But what if we viewed it in a different light? What if we perceived fear not as an enemy but as a guide, a compass leading us to growth and enlightenment? Fear is essentially an in-built safety mechanism in our psyches, an ally that safeguards us rather than our adversary. Matan offered an intriguing outlook towards fear during his discourse with Sheri. He suggested befriending our fears rather than attempting to drive them away, to move 'through' the fear instead of trying to move 'away' from it. This unique perspective of recognizing fear as an inherent part of our nature and a friend rather than an enemy is curiously liberating and empowering in our journey of personal growth.

Career Transitions with Assistant Professor and Sport Scientist Catherine Saenz

Career Transitions with Assistant Professor and Sport Scientist Catherine Saenz

On today’s episode, I’m talking to Assistant Professor and Sport Scientist Catherine Saenz about career transitions.

Catherine is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Sciences at The Ohio State University. Her research focuses on how exercise and nutrition impact energy metabolism at the molecular level and translating this into personalized performance prescriptions. With one year to go in her PhD program she followed her advisor from UConn to Ohio State which meant she had to retake classes and extend her training. And then again in her first job out, she was one year away from going up for tenure when an opportunity to go back to Ohio State came up and she again took the risk and made the transition. Before pursuing an academic career, Catherine thought she would do clinical work and completed an internship in Dietetics at Iowa State University and a postdoctoral fellowship with the Cleveland Guardians.

    We talk about:

    • How to navigate career transitions
    • The trap of excusing not getting started by over-preparing and being stuck in a learning mode or student-mentality
    • Building your confidence and your voice to share the work that you love
