    Savory Cornbread vs. Sweet Cornbread

    Savory Cornbread vs. Sweet Cornbread

Wow wow wow, as we approach the holiday season Chef Carla Hall is here to throw down for savory cornbread against her friend, fellow cook and writer, Chadwick Boyd, who is totally okay with a little extra sugar in the mix. Carla does NOT add extra sugar in her recipe and she has the evidence to prove it. This is a Food Court to remember with Carla going into a trance that cannot be broken by any mere bell,  Chadwick overcoming a duck confit injury and a final winner's scream that woke my dog from a deep sleep. Happy Thanksgiving, y'all!

Episode 53 with Carla Hall - 2-Time Top Chef Finalist, Television Personality, Podcaster

Hootie! Who? Carla Hall is in the box with us in this full spectrum episode. Carla was first known by the general public for being a finalist on Top Chef Season 4 and Top Chef All-Stars, where her authentic and down to earth soul captured the hearts of viewers. She is also a former cohost of the renowned ABC daytime talk show, "The Chew" and is an active judge for multiple baking championship competitions on Food Network! Though Carla initially embarked on a career as a CPA, she explored the modelling industry for a moment, landing her in Paris, France, which ultimately wound her up in the culinary industry.

Carla is open with us about growing up facing adversity and racism as a female POC, initially in an all-black community and school, then relocating to an all-white neighbourhood and facing those experiences alike. Oh, and did we mention she makes an official apology to Mr. WAYNE BRADY?! You'll have to watch to find out why...

She is a multi-cookbook author, a fellow podcaster with her show "Say YES!", has a new children's book coming out, and is an overall B O S S WOMAN! Carla was a gracious and soulful human to connect with and she has endless wisdom, which she imparted in her time with us.

    Episode 393: Chadwick Boyd's biscuits

    Episode 393: Chadwick Boyd's biscuits

On today’s episode of THE FOOD SEEN, the grandson of a preacher man, Chadwick Boyd was raised on Southern fare: fried chicken biscuits, coconut custards, lemon meringue pie … It was in his blood to host, holding his first dinner party at 10 years old, cooking Steak Diane, twice-baked potatoes and peas for mama out of the Betty Crocker’s Cookbook for Boys and Girls. Since then, Boyd’s had lobster for New Year’s Eve dinner on the set of Dead Poet’s Society, cooked alongside Dolly Parton, been seen on the big screen in over 15,000 movie screens around country for his series “Reel Food”, and now works as a food & lifestyle brand strategist. That said, he’s still all about those biscuits; hosting an International Biscuit Festival in Knoxville, TN for over 20K attendees, coordinating a traveling “Biscuit Time” event series with chef and television personality Carla Hall, and continues to use food as a medium for storytelling throughout his life.

    Carla Hall Does It All

    Carla Hall Does It All

When Carla Hall first appeared on Top Chef, it was clear she was a star in the making. An accountant and model turned caterer, Carla stole the show, even though she ultimately had to pack her knives and go. Today, Carla is a force in the industry with TV gigs and multiple cookbooks, including her latest, Carla Hall’s Soul Food: Everyday and Celebration. We talk highs and lows with Carla, from interviewing First Lady Michelle Obama onstage in Cleveland for the Becoming tour to opening and closing her Brooklyn restaurant. Carla’s “six-word novel”? “Say yes, adventure follows, then growth.”

At the end of the show, find out who Becky Sue Wilberding of Baking the Goods thinks is the Bombe.

    The Color of Agriculture

    The Color of Agriculture

In honor of Black History Month, we recognize the difficult past and celebrate the undeniable impact of African American farmers on past, present, and future foodways. It’s impossible to distill the entire meaning of Black History in America down to 20 minutes, so we chose to focus on the profound ways that farming can connect history and culture to environment and food.

We begin with two HRN Hall of Fame Honorees, Carla Hall and Leah Penniman, who share stories of struggling to balance the complex history of Soul Food and Farming While Black, while simultaneously using their platforms to improve access to fair, healthy food – especially for African American communities in the US. We also turn our spotlight on the Southeastern African American Organic Network and Harlem Grown, two organizations keeping the culture of Black farming alive.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council.
