PROOF – Capital Punishment Deters Crime (In Japan)

PROOF – Capital Punishment Deters Crime (In Japan)

Have you heard that America has twenty times the homicide rate of Japan?  Have you heard why that is?  You have probably been told it’s because there are so few guns there.
That’s not it at all.  There are cultural differences which are significant.  But there are differences in their criminal justice system which are huge.  One of those differences is capital punishment.
The Japanese like the feeling of safety they enjoy in their country.  The majority also support capital punishment.
Is the execution of a criminal abhorrent?  Yes.
    Murder is worse.

    Injustice in Japan

    Injustice in Japan

On this episode of Voices in Japan, Ben and Burke discuss Carlos Ghosn's escape from what he has referred to as Japan's "hostage justice system."  In what can only be described as a spectacular fall from the highest level of business fame in Japan over two decades, Mr. Ghosn was out on bail, living in Tokyo, and awaiting trial for allegations of financial misconduct before fleeing the country to Lebanon in a dramatic escape last December by sneaking out of the country inside of a large box for musical equipment on board a private plane.  This episode covers the claims of an inside plot between Nissan and the Japan government to oust Mr. Ghosn from power, the ridiculous circumstances that allowed him to escape, and the scrutiny that Japan's legal system has been under for its treatment of suspects.

What is there to say about the 2020 Honda CR-V? Sami struggles to come up with anything more than good vibes about possibly the best compact family crossover money can buy, but doesn't particularly think that's a problem for customers. After a brief diversion into the fascinating world of car showers, Benjamin reveals that the 2020 BMW M850i Gran Coupe is not just just a great alternative to the stuffier 7 Series, but also happens to deliver the kind of hands-off self-driving features he can actually appreciate. The pair then wrap things up with disgraced Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn's wacky escape from Japan .

We then talk about Jill's test vehicle this week: the 2020 Acura RDX A-Spec compact SUV. Mark Bilek, Senior Director of Communications and Technology for the Chicago Automobile Trade Association, calls in to fill us in on the upcoming 2020 Chicago Auto Show and give us his perspective on the state of auto shows in general. Tom has a tricky quiz for Jill and Damon on real versus fake 2020 auto paint color names, and Damon runs down this week's published articles on the Consumer Guide Daily Drive blog. We close out the show by sharing a few of our most memorable auto-show experiences.
