    Sake Flavoured KitKat Bars???

    Sake Flavoured KitKat Bars???

This week we try some Sake flavoured Kit Kat Bars from Japan (at least we think it's Saka flavoured - turns out to be rum raisin). We also dig into some spicy Cheetos from Korea. We discuss the brilliant young inventor, Robert Sansone, and his award winning synchronous reluctance motor. We muse about the similarities between women and car. Rivian makes All Electric Delivery Vans for Amazon. We briefly chat about whether or not the Catholic Church should be pro contraceptives. Then we complain about the Terrible Trains in Ottawa. We discuss the benefits and drawbacks of carbon fiber. Recorded August 19, 2022.
Thank you so much for listening,

Food and Beverage Super Bowl Ads + Valentine’s Day Food Offerings

Food and Beverage Super Bowl Ads + Valentine’s Day Food Offerings

Food and beverage brands start building buzz for their Super Bowl ads weeks in advance, and this year was no exception. In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney talks about some of the food and beverage ads that premiered during Super Bowl LVI. Many fans watch the game solely for the commercials, and the use of celebrity cameos was prevalent in almost all the big game ads. Sydney describes the ads from Bud Light, Lay’s, Michelob ULTRA, Hellmann’s, Budweiser, Frito-Lay and Uber Eats. The team wonders whether the ads are truly meant to sell a product or service, or whether they are more of a cultural phenomenon for brands to participate in.

Also, in this episode, Sydney talks about some of the Valentine’s Day food offers from restaurants and food companies. The list included a shareable heart-shaped pizza from California Pizza Kitchen, lobster tail bouquet-making kits from the Maine Lobster Marketing Collaborative and a fondue dinner from Melting Pot. The team proclaims that Valentine’s Day is a good marketing opportunity for food and beverage brands, but that there’s little room for innovation on the day of love.

    The Princess Bride of Chernobyl

    The Princess Bride of Chernobyl

In typical VHS Glow fashion, the four hosts discuss their nostalgia-relationship to The Princess Bride, including first viewing context, family & school screenings, & what their younger selves felt about the movie.

Joe gives a queer interpretation but then veers left and talks about Chernobyl.

    Further topics include:

    • GenX vs millennials
    • the definition of "feel good" movies & why the Simmons family disprefers them
    • Blue Velvet (1986) hermeneutics, or what's inside the lawn of S. Morgenstern's seemingly picture-perfect narrative
    • the life sucks yet true love prevails narrative
    • Chernobyl & 80s catastrophes
    • comedy and Americanization
    • Chernobyl & Cheetos (specifically, fluorescent cheese dust coating as boron & sand mixture dumped on reactor 4)
    • Chernobyl & Cheez Whiz
    • film culture & the desire to return to simple/idyllic narratives during (& after) times of existential crisis
    • the first sensational national headline story each host remembers
    • wtf is up with that grandfather/grandson dynamic?
    • a discursive shift in 1990s best picture academy award winners
    • & much more!

    Ep 049 | Snackin'

    Ep 049 | Snackin'

On today's absurd episode, we break down snacking to the last crumb! We each give our personal definitions of a snack and discuss the proper time to eat a snack and snacking etiquette when sharing (No double dipping!). Bryan gives us his unique (read: gross) snack combinations, Alex describes how he keeps his snacks away from his family and Markus vehemently disagrees with Alex and Bryan's rules for sandwiches as snacks.

Unilever and Rising Commodity Costs + Lay’s Flavor Swap

Unilever and Rising Commodity Costs + Lay’s Flavor Swap

How is a global food player dealing with rising commodity costs? In this episode of the Xtalks Food Podcast, Sydney discusses how Unilever maintained positive growth in its second-quarter results despite rising costs. The team discusses whether they would be willing to pay more for the same amount of product in the grocery store and whether food companies should be required to inform consumers of higher retail prices.

Also in this episode, Sydney talks about Lay’s Flavor Swap, a new line of limited-edition chips with familiar flavors. The line features Lay’s Doritos Cool Ranch, Lay’s Wavy Funyuns Onion and Lay’s Cheetos Cheese, all of which resemble Lay’s classic potato chips, but taste like Doritos, Funyuns and Cheetos, respectively. The team wonders whether these chips are innovative since Frito Lay owns all brands involved.
