Hilaire Belloc: Chesterton's Friend, The Establishment's Foe ~ Joseph Pearce

Hilaire Belloc: Chesterton's Friend, The Establishment's Foe ~ Joseph Pearce

“If you reject me on account of my religion, I shall thank God that He has spared me the indignity of being your representative.”

Like most of the words that escaped from his mouth or his pen, Hilaire Belloc’s famous speech to British voters was fiery, forceful and fueled by his faith.

It’s a great tragedy of history that Belloc has been pushed into the shadow of his friend and collaborator, G.K. Chesterton. Whether in prose or Parliament, Belloc was a force of nature. His life was one extended adventure, from escaping death as an infant to achieving fame as Oxford’s top debater to challenging the anti-Catholic prejudices of the British establishment.

And although he lived from 1870-1953, the alarm bells which he rang against elitist assaults on the Christian foundations of Western civilization are as prophetic and resonant today as they were in his time.

Our guest for this episode is Belloc biographer and internationally acclaimed writer, scholar and speaker, Joseph Pearce. Pearce is the author of over a dozen books. Alongside Old Thunder, his biography of Hilaire Belloc, his works include best-selling volumes on G. K. Chesterton, C.S. Lewis, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Shakespeare.

Pearce currently serves as St. John Henry Newman Chair in Catholic Studies at Thomas More College, Director of Book Publishing at the Augustine Institute, editor of the Ignatius Critical Editions and the St. Austin Review, and senior contributor at The Imaginative Conservative.

85 - Os Guinness on Signals of Transcendence and Christians in Revolutionary Times

In this episode, Os Guinness shares about his latest book Signals of Transcendence which is written to provide ten examples of famous atheists who came to know God through a unique moment in their life. Each story gives a brief summary of figures like Chesterton and Lewis highlighting their specific experience that led them to begin to take God more seriously. We also explore what it looks like for Christians to engage culture and politics during revolutionary times. Many Christians today just want to keep their heads down and remain faithful as Western civilization declines. Os counters this idea and suggests a better way for Christians to witness in the American republic.

    A Thought on Sola Scriptura

    A Thought on Sola Scriptura

Joseph listened to a Catholic/Protestant debate about sola scriptura recently, and was struck by how both sides seemed detached from the Catholic sensibility about where scripture comes from.

The quote he shared is from G.K. Chesterton's The Catholic Church and Conversion:  https://ignatius.com/the-catholic-church-and-conversion-ccacp/?gclid=CjwKCAjwq-WgBhBMEiwAzKSH6ES1t3UdpbJ9Q_ysbl-J-FpQminmh2pfPORS9GXOyKr46EBhYpZ0ZxoCUmsQAvD_BwE

In this episode, English professor Gary Tandy hosts author Joseph Pearce in a discussion about prominent Christian authors in the 20th century, their conversion stories, and how faith is revealed in fantasy literature. Conversing about "The Catholic Church and Conversion" // Episode 108

Conversing about "The Catholic Church and Conversion" // Episode 108

Before you get too far, know that this episode is predicated upon you listening to episode 106, "The Catholic Church and Conversion". So if you haven't listened to that one, please do so! It's taken from Chesterton's book by that name, and is quite good.

We're back for a longer-length episode this time, with an unpremeditated discussion of some of Chesterton's best work. I say 'unpremeditated' because Crystal and I often touch base about major points we'd like to discuss, and I pressed the 'record' button before we had a chance to do so, because recording with a full-term-plus-four-days woman is a chancy thing, not to be delayed. And I say 'best work' because I think he hit upon something about conversion that so many atheists and agnostics see, and so many cultural Christians/cradle Catholics miss, which is that it's a terrifying thing to say yes to something as bold as the claims of the Catholic Church. And I say 'discussion' because there were times neither of us were quite sure where we were going, but we were glad to keep going until we got there.

    Anywho, we hope you enjoy!

    As always,

The Catholic Church and Conversion // Episode 106

The Catholic Church and Conversion // Episode 106

I've heard a lot of different ways people talk about conversion, but there's something about the three stages that Chesterton outlines from his own conversion that I very much appreciate and have seen in many stories. He captures in his inimitable style some aspects of the path of conversion that I don't hear spoken of elsewhere. So I decided to just read passages from Chesterton wherein he describes these three stages of becoming fair to the Church, then fond of the Church, and then, penultimately, fearful of the Church. (Ultimately, the last stage is becoming faithful, but he's not talking about that in this chapter of his book.)

And the book is The Catholic Church and Conversion, and can be found here in text form: https://www.ewtn.com/catholicism/library/the-catholic-church-and-conversion-13705

Discussing Chesterton's Essay on the Family // Episode 101

Discussing Chesterton's Essay on the Family // Episode 101

There's a lot in G.K. Chesterton's essay, "On Certain Modern Writers and the Institution of the Family", and we set out to discuss some of it in this episode!

From the reserved style, to the fear of the other, to the problem of evil, to our sincere desire to sit and talk with Chesterton himself, our conversation on this essay was freeform, a free-for-all, and free for all.

A book that is mentioned is Uniformity with God's Will, by St. Alphonsus Liguori. It can be found as an e-text and audio text here: https://www.ccel.org/ccel/alphonsus/uniformity.html or for purchase here: https://tanbooks.com/sanctification/spiritual-master-books/uniformity-with-gods-will/

We hope you get a chance to discuss this essay with others as well! More than that, we hope it will awaken in you the thing that we know needs to be re-awoken in us-- a profound love of neighbor that gets us over ourselves.

Feel free to rate, review, and share this episode!

(NOTAS Y ENLACES DEL CAPÍTULO AQUÍ: https://www.jaimerodriguezdesantiago.com/kaizen/58-modelos-mentales-10-conos-trabalenguas-y-un-poema-de-don-draper/)

“Ahora espero en calma a que
    la catástrofe de mi personalidad
    parezca hermosa de nuevo,
    interesante y moderna.

    El campo es gris
y marrón y blanco en los árboles.
    Nieves y cielos de risas
    siempre apagándose. Menos alegre,
no sólo oscuro, no sólo gris.
