The Mayan Melipona Bee Sanctuary Project

The Mayan Melipona Bee Sanctuary Project

Bees are deeply woven into the cosmology and spiritual practices of many ancient cultures. The pyramid temples of the Yucatan are believed by Maya people to represent the unusual pattern of the Melipona Beehives which are shaped in tiered layers. The stingless Melipona bees are crucial in the survival of the rainforests of the Yucatan and the Amazon. It is interesting to note too, that melipona bees can be found in areas with Aztec pyramids as well.

The unusual melipona honey has been cultivated the same way for at least 3200 years. It has unique medicinal properties, and is used to treat conjunctivitis, glaucoma, and other ailments. Shamans use it ceremonially.

Grateful to have interviewed Director and Founder of the Mayan Melipona Bee Sanctuary Project, Rebecca Ann Robertson , about her organization's mission helping indigenous Mayan-speaking women learn this endangered way of life, giving them training, resources and Melipona stingless bees to continue this ancient tradition. Rebecca learned that one of the few surviving Mayan Codices reveals the deep spiritual connections earlier Maya people shared with bees.

In our FB conversation, Rebecca shares her experiences with Mayan Melipona Bee Sanctuary Project recipients, the importance of these bees to the rainforests of Mexico and the Amazon, and her time at Chichen Itza at the Equinox. For more information, check out mayanmeliponabee.org

    Before Atlantis with Mark Carlotto

    Before Atlantis with Mark Carlotto

What if ancient sites such as Machu Picchu, Chichen Itza, the Acropolis, and Temple Mount are not only thousands of years old but much older?

Until recently, a lack of hard evidence has led mainstream archaeologists to dismiss theories of past civilizations as pseudoscientific attempts to resurrect ancient myths and legends. However, new archaeological discoveries continue to challenge conventional explanations.

Inspired by Charles Hapgood’s hypothesis that ice ages were the result of shifts in the geographic location of Earth’s poles, independent researcher and author Mark Carlotto has discovered that certain archaeological sites throughout the world are aligned to what appear to have been four previous positions of the North Pole over the last 100,000 years. By analyzing their geometry, Dr. Carlotto argues that these sites were built tens of thousands of years ago by an unknown prehistoric civilization who aligned them relative to the position of the North Pole at the time of construction. Destroyed and rebuilt many times over, what exists today are more recent structures that were built over and around the ruins of earlier structures preserving the layout and orientation of the original site to the older pole.

Before Atlantis considers the possibility that a previous technological civilization could have developed from an earlier migration of modern humans out of Africa, which later co-existed with our primitive hunter-gatherer ancestors, and that past encounters with this older civilization were the source of ancient myths and legends of powerful gods, lost continents, and even Atlantis.

Travel Stories: Sky people, supernatural experiences at Mexico's Chichén Itzá (E22)

Travel Stories: Sky people, supernatural experiences at Mexico's Chichén Itzá (E22)

Episode 22 of From Sumplace New takes the podcast into the mystical realm when Jon shares his profound experience during our visit to the ancient Maya ruins at Chichén Itzá in Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. It was moving for both of us, but Jon had a totally different vibe, literally. After sharing what happened with our guide, Jon asked about the "sky people" and the next hour and forty minutes were filled with ancestral stories about the supernatural essence of Chichén Itzá. It's a day we'll never forget, and we look forward to visiting again. It's a must! We also discuss our upcoming travel itinerary that takes us from Bariloche, Argentina, to Edinburgh, Scotland. We leave Monday morning at 10 am and arrive in Scotland at 6 pm on Thursday. Here's the deal: 19 hours in a car, 24 hour layover in Buenos Aires, 13.5 hour flight to Amsterdam, 13 hour layover, 2 hour flight to Edinburgh. It's going to be an epic journey!
