    153. Treasured All These Things - Silent Surrender with Mary

    153. Treasured All These Things - Silent Surrender with Mary

"She wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger because there was no room for them in the inn" - Luke 2: 7.

This week we wrap up our miniseries on accompanying Mary through the Advent season by reflecting upon her silent surrender. This new and yet docile mother allowed God to lead the way as she gave birth in a stable and laid her newborn son in what once was a feeding trough for the animals.

But it wasn't merely her ability to quietly surrender to God's will in the difficulties of her story that made her silent surrender something to be awed at. No, Mary quietly surrendered even with the miraculous and glorious reception of all that is good. For, even after the shepherds declared all that the angels had told them about the birth of the Messiah, Mary "treasured all these words and pondered them in her heart"

POD 021 | Eyes of Faith: Exploring the Advent Season and Christmas

POD 021 | Eyes of Faith: Exploring the Advent Season and Christmas

In this episode of theFormed.life podcast, host Paul Brandes sits down with our on staff guest, Johnny Daigle, to talk about the Christmas season. Together they explore Christmas through the eyes of faith and how sacrifice can be a powerful spiritual discipline during the holiday season. They reflect on the stories of characters like Ruth, Zechariah, Elizabeth, Mary, Joseph, and the Wise Men and shed light on the interplay of faith and sacrifice. Join them as they unravel the profound significance of these characters' experiences and discuss the hope for the listeners to identify their next step of faith during this special time of the year.

    THREE KEY TAKEAWAYS:

    1. Seeing through the eyes of faith: Johnny and Paul emphasize the significance of seeing life through the eyes of faith, where faith is described as a form of perception beyond sight. It's about stepping beyond what can be controlled and facilitating God's work beyond human control.
    2. Sacrifice as a spiritual discipline: They highlight how sacrifice as a spiritual discipline is pivotal, emphasizing the importance of sacrificing for others and abandoning personal security to trust in God's provision. This perspective is connected to the characters in the Advent series, reflecting the idea of offering oneself to help others and experiencing God's provision.
    3. Living out the light of God with us: Johnny and Paul underscore the idea that the light of God with us should resonate throughout the year, not just during the Christmas season. The hope is to encourage individuals to identify their next steps of faith, embracing the call to sacrificially step into and experience God's presence in a deeper and more profound way.

    QUOTES:

“But when you stepped out on the reality of God, it is so much more blessed because God is there at the end. When you step out, you're stepping into the hand of God and he will uphold you. And that's what Jesus shows, and that's what we get to do."

    — Johnny Daigle

"What does it look like for us to really sacrifice with an expectation and an eye on something that God can do far beyond what we could control or manipulate on our own terms?"

    — Johnny Daigle

"Why do we do lights? Well, Jesus is the light of the world. Why do we give gifts? Because Jesus is the greatest gift ever given, and we rehearse that. And it's easy with the secularization of Christmas to kind of forget those fundamental truths."

    — Paul Brandes

Suzanne Sears (Best Retail Careers): New Canadians in Retail Industry

Craig and Suzanne Sears, the CEO and founder of Luxury Careers Canada discuss the challenges faced by new Canadians in securing employment, emphasizing the vast pool of highly educated, underemployed individuals in the Canadian workforce. She stresses the importance of retailers adapting to the reality that 35% of the workforce comprises new Canadians, urging a shift in mindset towards embracing diversity and providing equal opportunities.

The conversation delves into discriminatory hiring practices, with Suzanne addressing the prevalent demand for "Canadian experience" and the need for a cultural shift in employers' expectations. She anticipates potential legal changes to discourage such discriminatory practices. Moving on, the discussion turns to recent developments in the hospitality industry, specifically the ban on unpaid labour for work trials. Suzanne applauds this change, emphasizing its positive impact on making the workplace more humane and fair, particularly for new Canadians unfamiliar with stringent labor standards.

The interview concludes with a glimpse into the holiday hiring landscape and economic predictions. Suzanne projects a growth of approximately 2% in the retail industry over the next six months, challenging earlier predictions of a flat or declining market. Despite cautious optimism, she anticipates retailers adapting to the changing economic climate, emphasizing the resilience and strength of the retail sector in Canada.

TPP #69 | Preparing the Way for Christmas with Danielle Zapchenk

TPP #69 | Preparing the Way for Christmas with Danielle Zapchenk

How can we prepare the way for Christmas? Sometimes it is certain traditions, meals, Christmas movies. As a kid, one of our family’s favorite Christmas movies was White Christmas with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye.  It just became a tradition to watch it every year. I know most of the lines, the songs, the flubs they never edited. So when Eric and I started dating he had never seen it.

One night we all sat down to watch it and at the end, I waited for Eric to say WOW that was amazing.  He just looked at all of us and said, "so there really was no discussion of Christmas until the very last song?" Wait What!?!  He was right. None of us never even noticed that. It is easy for us to know a story so well yet we miss a huge part of it that we thought was there the whole time.

As we head into Christmas this week.  Is there something we are missing?  Not another gift, grandma’s jello recipe or do we need another 1,000 twinkle lights on the house.  No, I am talking about the preparation of our Hearts but preparing ourselves for the birth of Christ. So often we rush toward the holiday and completely miss it.  In today's episode, we are going to walk through what God was doing before the angel Gabriel talked to Mary, before Joseph and she made their journey before the hark the herald angels sang to the shepherds. How did God prepare the way for Jesus to be born? And How can we prepare the way for ourselves this year?

Merry Christmas to you and I hope you can see Jesus in every area of your Holiday.  I will leave  you with my favorite quote I found this week while studying the life of Zecharias and Elizabeth:

"Zacharias was praising God not for the YES to his own desires, but the YES to all of Humanity’s redemption.”
Tara Leigh Cobble - The Bible Recap

    Reflection Question

    2. How to Prepare the way for Christmas if you have unbelief

•By reading your Bible – this story through Jesus' birth

•Asking the question, do I have this story in my head, or is it living in my heart?

    3. How to Prepare the way for Christmas with JOY

•See the joy and share it

•Celebrate others like Elizabeth’s community did
