    ALEX PRITZ - Documentarian

    ALEX PRITZ - Documentarian

    Season 2 - Episode 9

This week, Team Deakins is so happy to invite documentary filmmaker Alex Pritz (THE TERRITORY, MY DEAR KYRGYSTAN) to join us for a wide ranging conversation. Alex explains to us how his background in science spurred him into filmmaking, and still drives the larger questions his films attempt to ask. We also discuss the moral issues raised by documenting real life events - and perhaps more importantly, real people. And then we get into the importance of being 100 percent honest in grappling with those issues. Eventually, the conversation turns to a field we know almost too much about: how to maintain a healthy work/life balance when your spouse is also in the business!

    ¡Extra!

Are You A Faithful Servant? - Admonition 158

Are You A Faithful Servant? - Admonition 158

    Scripture:

Exodus 39:5-6 So it was, from the time that he had made him overseer of his house and all that he had, that the LORD blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake; and the blessing of the LORD was on all that he had in the house and in the field. Thus he left all that he had in Joseph's hand, and he did not know what he had except for the bread which he ate. Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.

    Transcript:

And now, Admonition, brought to you by the Collierville Church of Christ.

What does it mean to be a faithful servant? What does it mean to be a faithful employee? What does it mean to be the kind of person who can be trusted? We read concerning Joseph that he was one who was trusted by Potiphar, so that Potiphar did not even know what was in his own house because it was under the hand, under the care, under the oversight, of Joseph. Joseph was such a faithful servant that Potiphar knew, if it was in Joseph's hands, it was in good hands and he didn't have to worry about it. What kind of person are you? What kind of employee are you? What kind of servant are you? Are You a faithful servant?

    The Redirection

    The Redirection

In this episode Tim reads "The Redirection" by Seymour Hersh.  Those who know US foreign policy know that the US has a terrible habit of arming it's enemies or groups that quickly become it's enemies, creating a situation that, all too often, results in US soldiers being slaughtered by their countries own weapons. "The Redirection" was published by The New Yorker magazine in 2007 and it tells of how the George W Bush administration began to arm Sunni radical groups in an attempt to mitigate a fabricated threat from Iran, who's influence in the region grew steadily due to the first several years of the US occupation of Iraq in the early 2000's. We quickly learn, as Hersh points out, that US soldiers and citizens alike are being stabbed in the back by the administration as these radicals are closely aligned with al-Qaeda terrorists. Unfortunately, policies like the one depicted in "The Redirection" have become commonplace in US foreign policy. Stay tuned for the wrap-up where I do a quick review of "Ghost Wars" a novel by Steve Coll. Enjoy!

Recently, a boater in Little Venice refused to hold a rope for a single-handed, double-moored fellow boater on the grounds that, "I never let people moor against my boat! If you  followed my example, you wouldn't need my help." Later that day, having moved off unassisted, Mike Coll ended up moored alongside me in Wesbourne Park .... so we recorded this podcast about anti social behaviour on the canals.

081 Sun, Sand, and Civil Rights: The Battle to Open America's Beaches to All

081 Sun, Sand, and Civil Rights: The Battle to Open America's Beaches to All

This week at In The Past Lane, the history podcast, I speak with Historian Andrew W. Kahrl about his new book, Free the Beaches: The Story of Ned Coll and the Battle for America’s Most Exclusive Shoreline. Beaches, like any public space in the US, have long been contested public spaces. That’s because throughout American history, the definition of the public – the citizenry – has never been agreed-upon, leading to the marginalization and exclusion of various racial, ethnic, and economic groups, not to mention women. And so attempts to access and use public spaces by these various marginalized groups have often been met with resistance. No doubt this brings to mind classic images of civil rights activists being violently attacked for sitting at whites-only lunch counters across the south during the 1950s and 1960s. Or Rosa Parks being arrested for refusing to yield her seat to a white man on a public bus.

But beyond these high profile incidents, there were many, many efforts to gain access to public spaces by African-Americans another marginalized groups. In the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s, African-American civil rights activists, whose names you will never know, battled to disaggregate public golf courses, public pools, and public parks. And, yes, public beaches.

As we learn in my conversation with historian Andrew Kahrl, some of these battles took place in the deep South, but others occurred in the north, in elite parts of New England like Greenwich, CT.  In these instances, African Americans didn’t encounter explicit sign saying “whites only.” But they did face innumerable barriers that were subtle, but also very effective at limiting access by people deemed “outsiders.”

In the course of our discussion, Andrew Kahrl explains:

How for centuries the “public trust doctrine” considered waterfront land to be public property open to all.

How after WWII, as suburbanization flourished and long-neglected shoreline property suddenly became valuable, communities with beaches began to restrict access to residents or members of private beach associations.

How in the same era marked by public policies like redlining that promoted residential and school segregation, similar initiatives excluded people of color from beaches.

How the Open Beaches movement emerged to oppose efforts to privatize parts of the American coastline and to restrict access by the public.

How Ned Coll became in the 1960s and 1970s a civil rights activist who worked to force Connecticut communities – including elite towns like Greenwich, CT – to open their public beaches to all.

How “wade-ins” at segregated beaches became the equivalent of “sit-ins” at segregated lunch counters during the civil rights era.

Why a 2001 state Supreme Court decision that forced Connecticut communities to make their public beaches open to non-residents has led those communities to develop new exclusionary policies that perpetuate the exclusion of the poor and people of color.

Why recent incidents involving white Americans calling the police on African Americans who are using public parks, pools, golf courses, and beaches is part of a long tradition of using minor ordinances to police black bodies.
