Inquiry into insurers' responses to 2022 flood claims begins

Inquiry into insurers' responses to 2022 flood claims begins

It's supposed to be simple: If you're insured and your house gets damaged in a natural disaster, you should be able to process a claim in a timely fashion.

But as the clean up from ex-Tropical Cyclone Kirrily continues in North Queensland this week, a parliamentary inquiry into insurers' responses to major flood claims in 2022 has heard the process is anything but simple. In fact, it can be traumatising for flood victims.

    Roman Travers: Don't stop whingeing

    Roman Travers: Don't stop whingeing

It’s fair to say that we all love nothing better than to complain about what gets up our collective noses right?

Whether it’s the weather, a perennial go to over a cuppa with friends or the cost of living; we’ve all got something to say – and we love letting others know how we feel.

But there’s a big difference between whingeing to your mates and taking that step forward towards action that’ll make a difference. Although there’s not a great deal any of us can do about the weather; other issues that simmer close to the surface have got many of us taking photos and demanding action from our local councils.

Good luck getting any action out of Upper Hutt or Wellington City Councils. But there’s a massive difference around the country about what we complain about, and the timelines taken to get things sorted.

Some of the regular offenders on the list for councils to deal with are things like neighbour's trees impinging across boundaries, overflowing rubbish bins, and stuff mounting up around charity clothing bins.

The ‘Snap Send Solve’ app used by councils across the country received 106,979 reports over the course of last year. If you’re a photo snapper of offending situations, I’m sure you’ll know about this avenue for complaining.

Wellington features with 273 complaints relating to water leaks, along with the associated photo evidence. Northlanders sent in 383 snaps and complaints about their pothole collection.

You’d think Auckland would be up there with the biggest number of complaints to council, right? Wrong. Auckland sent in 10,198 complaints to council. The biggest city of whingers turns out to be… wait for it… this may shock the pearls of your necklace… Christchurch.

I was as shocked as you are! Yes indeed, Cantabrians sent in a whopping 10,833 complaints to their council. The stuff that got up the noses of the good people of Canterbury were broken water pipes, graffiti, tree issues, and potholes too.

Now of course, some councillors will say that some of these complaints were unnecessary, and some were genuinely useful; my message to you is simple: don’t stop whingeing!

When you see something that’s broken, overflowing, or graffiti where it shouldn’t be – which is anywhere you see it – get stuck in! Take those photos! Fire up your councils ‘Snap, Send, Solve’ app and lodge it all with them.

If we continue to slip into this insidious malaise of ‘she’ll be right’ lackadaisical stupidity, then things will only get worse. I’m sure there’s nothing more a council would like to see than having no complaints to deal with.

Pick your battles though. Don’t use this as a means to create your own version of war with your spiteful neighbour from hell… the one who always plays The Bee Gees at full volume when they’re on the gin and tonics, late into the night.

We shouldn’t tolerate graffiti. We definitely shouldn’t tolerate valuable clean water running down the road. We’ve been conditioned to accepting mediocrity over recent years. If we don’t complain, why should we expect anything get better?

    Plato’s View

    Plato’s View

Join me in this exciting and inspiring episode of Navigate the Day as we delve into the profound wisdom of Plato and Marcus Aurelius. In their timeless teachings, they encourage us to adopt a bird's-eye view of life, embracing the panoramic perspective that encompasses all aspects of our existence.

Plato, as beautifully expressed by Marcus Aurelius, invites us to witness the intricate tapestry of human affairs. From the bustling gatherings to the silent spaces, from weddings to divorces, births to deaths, and everything in between. It is through this expansive lens that we can truly grasp the interconnectedness and complexity of our world.

Today's journal prompt invites us to reflect on a question: Where have I lost the forest for the trees? Personally, I've found myself captivated by the minutiae of my daily life, losing sight of the bigger picture. I get caught up in my own discomforts and complaints, obscuring the grand tapestry that surrounds me. But when I take a step back, I realize the temporary nature of these challenges and their place within the broader journey of life.

It's often said that the devil is in the details, and I understand the truth behind this saying. However, I've come to recognize that getting hyper fixated on these details can blind me to the vastness of the world and the insignificance of my grievances in the grand scheme of things. As a human being, I have a responsibility to contribute positively to society, to make meaningful contributions that leave a lasting impact.

But I admit, I've also lost sight of the bigger picture in my relationships. Resentment and an inability to forgive have clouded my judgment, preventing me from seeing the greater harmony and growth that forgiveness can bring. It's crucial that I learn to let go of the past and extend forgiveness not only to others but also to myself. By doing so, I can release negative thoughts that hinder my personal growth.

The metaphor of steering our houseboats, as described in Campbell Walker's "Your Head Is A Houseboat," resonates deeply with me. It reminds me that choice plays a significant role in our journey through life. While the freedom to choose is empowering, it also comes with the responsibility to navigate wisely. We must resist the temptation to be swayed by fears and distractions that hinder our long-term progress.

Moreover, I've come to realize that my path is not fixed in stone. The sunk cost fallacy often tugs at my decisions, making it difficult to let go when something no longer serves me. However, the important question arises: If it wasn't already mine, how willing would I be to make it so? This thought challenges me to reevaluate my attachments and the meaning I assign to them.

Stepping outside of my own head and contemplating the vastness of the cosmos offers a refreshing perspective. It reminds me of the boundless opportunities for growth and the transient nature of our earthly worries. By embracing the bigger picture, I can navigate my days as purposeful steps on my chosen path, with the ability to pivot and grow along the way.

Join me on this journey of personal growth as we cultivate a broader perspective and a deeper understanding of our place in the world. Together, let's live each day to its fullest, making positive contributions to the lives of those we encounter. Remember, the forest is vast and beautiful, and it's up to us to see beyond the trees.

Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery!

Relationship Dirty Laundry Should Stay in the Hamper

Relationship Dirty Laundry Should Stay in the Hamper

S1 Episode 11: Relationship Dirty Laundry Should Stay in the Hamper

    Episode Summary

We are all guilty of it!  Airing complaints about our partner and our relationship to anyone who will listen.  As satisfying as it may feel short-term, there could be serious consequences from your vent session.

By letting family and friends know intimate details about your partner (even the flattering ones) you can create discomfort, embarrassment, and a violation of boundaries and trust between you and your partner, or the people you shared with.  Moreover, you open yourself up for judgment, criticism and potential backlash.

Airing relationship dirty laundry should be reserved for a therapist or trusted advisor, where you can expect confidentiality and advice.  Put yourself in the place of your partner.  Practice empathy and imagine how you would feel if your partner was sharing negative things about you, your habits or behaviors.

At the end of each episode, Marlee and Lis vent about commonly experienced issues in romantic relationships. In this episode, the ladies discuss when partners apply a double-standard between their family members and yours.

    Show Notes

Have you been airing out your relationship dirty laundry? You should not be doing this—that information needs to stay in the hamper. That said, almost all of us are guilty of airing dirty laundry about our relationships to family, friends, or coworkers at least once, whether for venting or validation.

However, by sharing this information, you risk it making its way back to your partner. Plus, if you put yourself in the position of your partner, it probably wouldn’t feel very good knowing that conversation was had. What you say could also influence the people you’re telling negatively against your partner and may change the way they look at them. While you may be able to get over the situation, the person you shared this intimate information with may not.

When you air your dirty laundry, the people you tell aren’t usually getting the full story. Rather, they are getting your perception about what happened. You may realize later on that you contributed to the situation or just experienced a simple miscommunication.

You may also want to consider that airing your dirty laundry may make the person you’re telling uncomfortable. This could be because the topic itself makes them uncomfortable, or it could make them feel uncomfortable around your partner, or even both. There are just so many reasons to keep your relationship dirty laundry in the hamper.

In this episode, the vent session topic is: When your partner applies a double-standard between their family member versus your family member. It’s unfair and creates animosity towards the favored family member. It reflects a power imbalance in the relationship and should not be tolerated.

    Don’t Tell Yourself Stories

    Don’t Tell Yourself Stories

Welcome to "Navigate The Day", where we explore the art of mindfulness and living a purposeful life. In today's episode, we dive into the topic of "Don't Tell Yourself Stories", inspired by the wisdom of Epictetus, and Ryan Holiday.

As I reflect on this quote, I am reminded of the times when I have been a loud mouth, whether it be boasting about my accomplishments or complaining about my problems. It's easy to get caught up in our own stories and forget that others have their own journeys as well. But by practicing humility and respect for others, we can cultivate stronger relationships and achieve greater success in our personal and professional lives.

It's important to recognize where we are being a loud mouth, whether it be in social situations, at work, or even in our own inner dialogue. By becoming more aware of our tendencies, we can take action to shift our mindset and behavior towards a more positive and productive direction.

As we navigate our days, let's remember to stay present and mindful, acknowledging both the good and the bad without getting lost in our own stories. By doing so, we can find greater fulfillment and purpose in our lives.

Thank you for tuning in to "Navigate The Day". Until next time, stay grounded and stay mindful.

Thank you for listening and joining me on my journey of self-discovery!

Peter Boshier: Chief Ombudsman on the mishandling of MIQ during Covid-19

Peter Boshier: Chief Ombudsman on the mishandling of MIQ during Covid-19

Chief Ombudsman Peter Boshier has been investigating hundreds of complaints made about the Government's approach to MIQ during the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Chief Ombudsman found the creation of a "lottery" system failed to emphasise individual circumstances, limiting fundamental human rights.

Peter Boshier says there was no evidence of evolving policy advice from MBIE to the Government, as the pandemic continued.

"Not everyone was in the same situation, we never are in life. And the best and most principled decisions and actions are taken in regard to people's circumstances. Here, it was effectively a lottery. You are either in or out depending on chance, not depending on merit."

The Recipe for Cooking a Raw Complaint into a Finished Solution

The Recipe for Cooking a Raw Complaint into a Finished Solution
There is no shortage of things, ways, and conditions to complain about. Any time more than one person gets in a room, the opportunity for argument can exist. Now imagine a room of hundreds. How many arguments or complaints can come out of that space? Leaders responsible for others are going to be taking in perspectives, some easier to hear, some more difficult. As a leader, you don’t get to decide which kinds of information comes your way so you have to be nimble to respond appropriately in the moment. People will say “don’t bring me complaints, bring me solutions,” and there’s truth there. As you’ll hear from the team, complaints are much more complex and nuanced than “bring me answers.” A complaint can range from the temperature of the office to a report of embezzlement. There is no one canned answer for leaders, as you know by now, leaders are expected to appropriately resolve the complex. This episode will help leaders ratchet up their response to complaints and serve their teams more effectively.

    32 - Misery Loves Company

    32 - Misery Loves Company

Cindy Esliger examines complaining that doesn’t strive for solutions in this episode. Those people who whine and complain about how things are but resist solutions are the people holding us back. Cindy talks about how to look for possibilities instead of complaints.

We all need to vent and get things off our chest from time to time, that’s healthy. But when we complain repeatedly about the same thing and never look for a way to address or solve the problem, we’re compounding the problems at hand. Cindy breaks down how complaining has a negative impact on our lives and psychology.

Complaining is ineffective and useless if we won’t use it to seek out improvement and address issues. Cindy notes that we need to fix the balance of complaining more than we’re resolving. Negativity holds us back and Cindy has sound advice for turning our frustrations into positive action instead of repetitive misery. It’s time to examine why we’re complaining and what we can do to remedy it.
