Neuropathology (CONCUSSIONS) with Mary Alexis Iaccarino

Neuropathology (CONCUSSIONS) with Mary Alexis Iaccarino

Hi, last week I fell down a flight of stairs. Then I went to the hospital. Then I emailed Dr. Mary Alexis Iaccarino, a Harvard Medical School professor and specialist in rehabilitation from traumatic brain injuries. I asked her all about what happens during a concussion, when to be worried, how long it takes to heal, when a person should get their ass to a hospital, what a brain scan can tell us about a head injury, what it CAN’T tell us about a head injury, if you can fall asleep after a head injury, and the differences between mTBI, TBI, SRC, CTE and even ATGATT. Plus, bike helmets, Natasha Richardson, fruit fly role models and some truly infuriating statistics on who gets mTBI treatment and who doesn’t. And stay tuned later this week for a bonus episode on what happens when bighorn sheep bash their skulls together.

Bert starts this episode with deciding he's going to drink today, and figured it's not fair only uppity non-woke women get to be called Karen... he wants to figure out names for the rest of the spectrum of dumb people. Are you a Liam? We watch the classic viral video of the girl getting hit in the head with a shovel and see what the ladies are up to today. Bert shares a story of when he got a bad concussion in college and we try to figure out how much it's affected him in the present. The bears take a look at some personalized content from ASMR Maddy and go down a whole ASMR rabbit hole. We hear about Bert's experience watching UFC 268 at Madison Square Garden with Justin Gaethje and Rose Namajunas, which leads us to look into the best looking fighters and watch the Joe Schilling altercation at the bar. Concussions: How A Mild Brain Injury Can Alter Our Perception Of Sound

Concussions: How A Mild Brain Injury Can Alter Our Perception Of Sound
Headaches, nausea, dizziness, and confusion are among the most common symptoms of a concussion. But researchers say a blow to the head can also make it hard to understand speech in a noisy room. Emily Kwong chats with science correspondent Jon Hamilton about concussions and how understanding its effects on our perception of sound might help improve treatment.

For more of Jon's reporting, check out "After a concussion, the brain may no longer make sense of sounds."

What's the Deal with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy?

Concussions are bad enough for football players, but research has found all of those smaller hits can add up to massive brain trauma later in life too, leading to a condition called chronic traumatic encephalopathy, a condition the NFL sought to cover up.
