NFL's handling of head injuries and concussions: NFL is changing rules, enforcing differently, and considering equipment changes to reduce head-to-head hits due to heightened awareness of head injuries and concussions. However, owners push for longer seasons, and players face long-term health consequences like memory loss and crippling in old age, necessitating comprehensive solutions
Learning from my conversation with Michael Lewis in 2011 is that the issue of head injuries and concussions in the NFL is a significant one that is already changing the way professional football is played. With heightened awareness, rules are being enforced differently, and equipment may be changing to reduce head-to-head hits. However, despite this, NFL owners are pushing for a longer season. The long-term health consequences of football, including memory loss and virtual crippling in old age, are becoming increasingly apparent to players, leading them to adapt their behavior to some extent. Ultimately, the NFL will need to address this issue comprehensively, whether through rule changes, equipment modifications, or both, to ensure the safety and well-being of its players.
