Pot: Reviving Eateries Post-Pandemic with Milkweed Cannabis Confections
Since the pandemic, more than 70,000 restaurants, diners, and cafes in the US have closed. And many places that did manage to reopen didn’t make it long. Another thing that happened during the COVID lockdown; CBD and THC skyrocketed in popularity. Now, cannabis appears to be giving a new lease on life to some formerly-shuttered eateries.

In this episode, host Brit Smith talks to Chef Andrew LeSturgeon and Will Fleming of Milkweed Cannabis Confections in Burlington, VT about how their infused confectionary line is revitalizing their culinary brand post-pandemic.

As Chef Andrew explains, their famed fine diner 'Monarch and the Milkweed' closed its doors in 2020, but they were able to keep their line of CBD confectionary 'Milkweed Cannabis Confections' going. Eventually, after months of closure, Andrew and Will saw a silver lining and decided to rethink their mission with their popular cannabis candies at the forefront. Now, they're making their post-pandemic comeback by focusing solely on their CBD and THC line of treats.

Andrew and Will discuss the experience of closing their restaurant, and how it forced them to pivot and incubate their existing CBD chocolate line. They also talk about the importance of staying true to their roots by continuing to use high-end local ingredients, while infusing it with local organic full-spectrum cannabis for Vermont and Massachusetts consumers.

We've got Dr. Justin Marchegiani and Dr. Bill Rawls are talking co-infections and fibromyalgia. Our guest, Dr. Rawls, started out as a conventional OBGYN. In his 40's when he suffered from fibromyalgia and Lyme disease, he quickly realized none of his conventional medicine colleagues could help him, and this was his turning point.

We're looking at why you might move away from antibiotics and into herbal medicine to use a herb or fungi's own anti-microbial properties to your advantage. Dr. J gets specific herbs with direct anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties mentioned, like cat's claw, andrographis, Japanese knotweed, garlic extract, and cryptolepis. Some others like reishi mushrooms, cordyceps, and salvia miltiorrhiza (red sage) work well with the support of glutathione.

This is such a great podcast, some other topics covered are the quality of the herbs sourced, the stress and stories behind every patient, everyday nutrition, patient assessment and testing (and how Dr. Rawls differs), and much more.

This Candy Man Can: Richard G. Ross Builds a Global Candy & Confections Empire

This Candy Man Can: Richard G. Ross Builds a Global Candy & Confections Empire

This week, on a special holiday-weekend edition of Monday Morning Radio, host Dean Rotbart interviews Richard G. “Rick” Ross, founder and owner of GALERIE Candy & Gifts. GALERIE is known the world over for creating highly original, trendy novelties and gifts around candies, including collector’s items, interactive toys, plush characters, and the like.

Rick’s company also produces and distributes branded treats for Hershey, Disney, Warner Brothers, Marvel – and tons of popular movies, including Star Wars, Despicable Me, Minions, and Trolls.

The interview is a reunion of sorts for Dean and Rick, who first met back in 1981 – when Rick was a 19-year-old jelly bean entrepreneur and Dean, then 24, was a cub reporter working for The Wall Street Journal in its Cleveland bureau.

That year, Dean actually profiled Rick on the front page of the Journal, a distinction that few small business owners will ever be lucky or successful enough to merit.

Rick, now 56, is in the Candy Hall of Fame

This week, Rick not only catches up with Dean, he shares his storybook journey from teen tycoon to candy industry senior statesman, and talks about the pluses and minuses of achieving success and recognition at such an early age.

Fittingly, Rick’s mother, Helen, makes a cameo on the podcast, as it was Rick’s mother who really launched him on his path to success.

Jeni Britton Bauer: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

Jeni Britton Bauer: Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams

Gourmet ice cream that takes the whole state of Ohio to manufacture! This week we’re talking with Jeni Britton Bauer, the founder and CEO of Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams. She’s been a pioneer in gourmet ice cream since she started over two decades ago, and continues to innovate.

I was curious about how she develops her inventive flavors and what it takes to make award-winning ice cream at scale. It turns out there’s a lot more art and science--and logistics—than I ever imagined. She shares her greatest challenges—from product recalls and regulatory requirements, to angry consumers blaming you for buying up all the state’s strawberries. And we talk about the importance of just rolling up your sleeves in order to learn and evolve your product. In the process, she has engaged partners across the whole state and beyond, from the dairies and growers to the service providers and suppliers, to create a “Fellowship Model” for making her ice cream.
