This is how your personality changes as you get older

Do you feel like you recognise your younger self? Or do you think you've changed? Turns out our personalities aren't as fixed as we'd previously thought. There's a growing body of evidence that our personalities shift as we reach our 60s, and again as we reach the end of our lives. Hear from personality experts Professor Brent Roberts and Associate Professor Tim Windsor about how you might change, and how you can tweak your personality to thrive in later life.

    Conscientiousness

    Conscientiousness

Are we talking about our moral compass, or just general tidiness and orderliness, when we use the word 'conscientious'?  And do we get our meanings mixed up?

Frances talks to Michelle Armitage, an expert in interior design psychology, about conscientiousness, with Michelle's excellent book, Your Design Personality at Home as their starting point.

    Episode #16: Co-host Matt Halpern. Rockstar drummer for PERIPHERY...deep thinker...avoiding a drug addiction...parental problems...master of intentional living.

Matt Halpern, an incredibly savvy and accomplished businessman at the well-versed age of 38, ridiculously focused and disciplined since four years old, and hyper-talented with almost every one of his varied pursuits.

As legit rockstar drummer with his progressive metal mates in their band Periphery, Matt and I have a deep conversation about his intentional avoidance of drug and alcohol addiction, even while growing up in Baltimore, arguably the heroin capital of the world.

Matt gleams as he presents the massive responsibility assigned to himself as a new father, reveals how he and his gorgeous wife Natalie met, and describes their plans to help their son be the best person he can be, whoever he chooses to be, and what about those sinister toddler iPads and iPhones anyway?

For all you musicians and Periphery fans, Matt discusses multiple new educational projects and products, an upcoming new album, and one of the keys for bands to be successful.

We walk down our shared memory lane from Baltimore and even with more than a decade of birthdays between us, Matt and I discuss our synonymous life non-negotiables: conscientiousness, introspection, saying yes, great communication, absolute accountability, and refined gumption to get up and go.

Matt dives deep into some of his early and never-before disclosed painful problems at home, shares the wicked smart life mantra he learned on the first day of acting class in college, shares his biggest regret, and slyly laughs about his biggest flop.

Operating from our proprietary structured daily routines of defined priorities, we discuss the importance of keeping first things first, remaining flexible, thus creating a calm and productive center within.

A crystal-clear thinker and speaker, Matt divulges why he does what he does: so to be focused, able to deal with whatever comes his way, remaining to do the good work on the right stuff, and living his best life for his family, for as long as he possibly can.

Lastly, he shares his thoughts on man’s best friend, and we hear Matt’s heart bleed through his words talking about his love for dogs. Please give a listen, I think you will gain something surprising from this one hour and thirty-eight minutes episode, actually, I know you will. ~ Thank you, Roger Ray Bird.

What can I use the Grit Scale for?

I created the Grit Scale so that I could study grit as a scientist.  Why? Because you cannot study what you cannot measure.

I also think this questionnaire is useful as a prompt for self-reflection. For example, some of the most effective coaches and teachers I know give this questionnaire to their players and students in order to prompt a conversation about their evolving passion and perseverance.

However, I hasten to point out that all psychological measures, including the Grit Scale, have limitations. You can fake a higher grit score without much effort, for example. Another very serious but not-so-obvious limitation of questionnaires is called “reference bias.” This distortion of scores comes from people holding different standards by which they judge behavior. So, your score not only reflects how gritty you are but also the standards to which you hold yourself. I talk about this limitation, among others, in this article on measurement which I co-authored with my friend and colleague David Yeager.

In sum, I think the Grit Scale can be used for research and for self-reflection, but its limitations make it inappropriate for many other uses, including selecting employees, admitting students to college, gauging the performance of teachers, or comparing schools or countries to each other.

    Ep. 110 -- INDUSTRIOUSNESS

    Ep. 110 -- INDUSTRIOUSNESS

In this episode I explain the 5th and final facet on Conscientiousness. To be industrious in this life, it means to be both energetic and devoted to your dreams and ambitions. I talk a little bit about that, and I also take time to close out the Conscientiousness series! I challenge you to work on becoming more conscientiousness by working on one facet at a time!

    Ep. 109 -- PERFECTION

    Ep. 109 -- PERFECTION

Perfection is the 4th facet of conscientiousness. The quote of the episode is from Vince Lombardi and it sums up the episode really well, "Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence." Ladies and Gentlemen, no one is perfect, but that is a motivator because if there are people who are where you want to be in this life who reached that point with an imperfect life, so can you! So strive everyday to chase perfection and to be perfect in your imperfectness, and along the way you may catch excellence!

    Ep. 108 -- ORGANIZATION

    Ep. 108 -- ORGANIZATION

The 3rd facet of Conscientiousness is organization. Why do we aim for organization? Because when we are organized in life, such as our schedules, our chores, and the things we need to do, we can then focus more on the things we want to do and chase our dreams. I am not asking you to be super organized, however if you are organized, this allows for you to automate certain tasks in your life so in turn you can focus more time and energy on the things you want to do!

    Ep. 104 -- PRUDENCE

    Ep. 104 -- PRUDENCE

Prudence is defined as, in my words, the ability to, when you come to a "T" in the road, make a right when you KNOW you must go right. Prudence is one of the 5 facets of conscientiousness. I did an episode a LONG time ago and I wanted to revisit these facets and talk about them solely on their own episodes! I hope you enjoy!!

    DiSC...why can't they understand me?

    DiSC...why can't they understand me?

In January 2020 Sam Parker “Inspire your people,” encouraged leaders to take a weekend challenge to ‘listen more and speak less’. The rules were:

    • No talking over people.
    • No finishing their sentences.
    • No cutting someone off mid-sentence with “Sorry to interrupt…”
    • More listening.
    • More taking a breath before you talk & after the other person has finished speaking.

On completing the exercise people reported they discovered more than you have before e.g. what was important to others, what type of words people used most and the variety of ways people used to influence others or make their point of view known.

Inspired by that listening exercise and a 'leadership on the run' podcast listeners request, episode 16 unpacks the DiSC framework and talks you through the behaviours to watch for and the responses you can use to make it easier for you to  communicate with a greater variety of people within your workplace.

The DiSC framework (registered trademark of Willey Inc) provides the basis for this conversation.

DiSC is a framework that categorises sets of behavioural preferences into 4 domains. Understanding these domains and their specific communication needs will provide you with the knowledge to adapt. mould and change your own communications to ensure each of your team members is easily able to comprehend your message.

Dominance, influence, steadiness and conscientiousness are the four categories.

    1. Dominance –people who display dominance in their communications prioritise and value: results, action and challenge. Communicate with these people by providing solutions, being direct, giving them just the facts. Speak quickly – don’t repeat yourself and keep the discussion in the big picture scenario….no minor details. They hate to lose and hate feeling vulnerable.

    2. Influence – people who display influence in their communications prioritise and value: action, enthusiasm and collaboration.

To communicate with these people be enthusiastic, display loads of positivity and energy. Ask them for their ideas and let them express their views and solutions – do not interrupt them. They like big picture scenarios and social or collaborative approaches to solution finding e.g. brainstorming in a meeting. They hate being ignored, disapproved of or losing influence.

    3. Steadiness – people who display steadiness in their communications prioritise and value: collaboration, giving support, stability and loyalty. To communicate with these people be polite, calm and deliberate. Never be confrontational. Be sure to let them know your expectations, of them, prior to participation in any project. Let them know the group decision then ask how they could help out. Be personable, they hate conflict and would be horrified if they offended anyone. They are not so fast to come on board when there is a change.

    4. Conscientiousness – people who display conscientiousness in their communications prioritise and value: accuracy, quality and correctness. They want to show their expertise and to produce quality work. To communicate with them verbalise all the facts and details, or show patience, persistence and diplomacy as they verbalise all these details for you. Minimise small talk. These people find it difficult to make quick decisions, delegate or compromise for the good of the team. They would prefer not to join in the workplace social events.

There are  other frameworks that you can use to improve communications with people within your team e.g. MBTI, HBDI, OPQ.

What is personality and how does it change? Why do people love the Myers-Briggs personality test? How would conscientiousness have helped us in our ancestral past? Has helicopter-parenting made American kids fragile and easily debilitated? Has the smartphone actually destroyed a generation? Should we be optimistic about the gains made by the reform movement in psychology? Bonus: Mickey gives Yoel a surprise gift. Special Guest: Brent Roberts.
