We look at the political background and disagreements that lead to the Great Schism, the events of the Schism itself, and the current Eastern Rites that have since been reunited with Rome. From 1095 to 1291 CE, thousands and thousands of knights, peasants, nobles, soldiers, and more left Europe for the Holy Land around Jerusalem to take land and power away from Muslims, and into Christian hands. Pope Urban II issued a speech in 1095 calling Christian to take up arms and reclaim "Christian" lands. As incentive, he promised salvation for all who died fighting for what he said was God's will.  But was it ever about God's will? Or was it about Pope Urban's will? Were the Crusades ever really about anything celestial? Or were they about man and power?  Were they mostly about the Catholic Church struggling to consolidate power amongst European Christian monarchs and make sure Christian leaders knew who was really in charge? Holy War? Or power grab? Either way, the decree of Pope Urban set much of the western world on a path we are still following today nearly a full 1,000 years later.

The church had been built in the sixth century A.D. by the Byzantine emperor Justinian. The Byzantine Empire, founded in A.D. 330, was the first great flowering of Christian civilization after the fall of the Roman Empire. Its capital city of Constantinople (today Istanbul), on the site of the ancient Greek city of Byzantium, commanded the Bosporus, the narrow strait linking the Black Sea with the Dardanelles and the Mediterranean. The city was the geographical and cultural bridge between Europe, the Middle East, and Asia. Its crowning glory was to be the Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom).

As the first anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine approaches, the full extent of the devastation of war is being assessed. 7,200 civilians have been killed and almost 12,000 injured. 8 million people have fled as refugees and 5 million are displaced within the country. In this Religion Media Centre briefing, faith leaders discuss the way churches have played a critical role in providing humanitarian aid with the need for food and shelter developing into provision of “psycho-social support” for the many dimensions of living in a country torn by war.

The fracturing of the Orthodox church was discussed, with churches, priests and congregations changing their allegiance from Moscow to Constantinople instead. And in the UK, where more than 150,000 refugees have settled, civil society and church groups have been mobilised to care for people who arrived with nothing. Catholic Ukrainian churches were on the front line, and now there is a brand new church in the UK, the Ukraine Orthodox church, still looking for a building to call home.

Leo Devine hosts this discussion with Peter Robertson, from Christian Aid, a senior journalist on humanitarian aid who has recently visited Ukraine to report on the front line; Rev. Fr. Myroslav Pushkaruk, who is establishing additional Ukrainian Orthodox parishes in the UK; Father Taras Khomych, Catholic Priest of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and senior lecturer in early Christian literature and Byzantine theology at Liverpool Hope Univechurchrsity; Sergei Chapnin, from the Orthodox Christian studies centre, Fordham University, New York; and Krish Kandiah, founder of Sanctuary UK who has mobilised places of refuge for Ukrainian people.

1470 BC - A five-ship caravan by Egyptian Pharoah Hatshepsut undertakes a unique voyage, possibly the first plant-collecting mission masterminded by a woman. The voyage is successful as the touring party returns with 31 live plants of a certain species. Over 4000 kms away, in a port once considered one of the greatest in the world, an extract of the same plant is making its way around the world. But which plant is this, and why does it matter today?
