Cameron Silver on circular fashion, the theatre of retail and vulnerability

Cameron Silver on circular fashion, the theatre of retail and vulnerability

In this episode, Anne Muhlethaler, host of Out of the Clouds, interviews Cameron Silver. Known as ‘the impresario of vintage fashion’, Silver - who pursued acting in his teens - is a talented retailer, storyteller, and an all-round entertaining guest.

In their interview, he tells Anne about how he landed working in retail while pursuing acting and singing roles, and how he started building a shop in his mother’s living room, after discovering a passion for thrifting while touring around the US. Later, he founded the now famous vintage couture boutique Decades Inc. in LA, where he started to dress celebrities and stylish clients for red carpet and other assorted events.

Cameron’s passion for the history of fashion is linked to the fact that he believes that ‘fashion is a barometer for how we live, have lived and will live.’ Himself a daring dresser, he tells Anne about style, self-expression and how much he enjoys mentoring emerging designers and consulting for brands.

The two end on discussing the difficult times Cameron went through when, in the middle of the pandemic, he found himself caring for his ailing father, Jack B Silver, who passed away later in 2020. Cameron shares with both great vulnerability and kindness and in the middle of that, manages to impart some wonderful wisdom.

A beautiful, touching and very funny interview. Happy listening!

Ep-7 JJ Valaya: Why Indian Couture Will Always Be In Style

Ep-7 JJ Valaya: Why Indian Couture Will Always Be In Style

JJ Valaya, one of India’s senior most couturiers is known to celebrate maximalism in his opulent and detailed lehngas and sherwanis, while his journey of over three decades mirrors the growth and evolution of Indian fashion itself. In the latest episode of Shop Talk, Valaya offers insight on his design process that includes the layering of intricately detailed embroideries, as he explains that ‘timelessness’ will always be an innate part of his craft. The couturier further argues that though the pandemic may have shrunk the Indian wedding market, the sartorial extravaganza will remain intact.

Talking Graphic Design for Athletic Apparel with Adam Johnson

Talking Graphic Design for Athletic Apparel with Adam Johnson

This week Adam Johnson (@the_creative_explorer), a Senior Graphic Designer at Nike, talks about the balance between branding and appeal in apparel graphic design and how that ties into the overall narrative story. We discuss working two years ahead of real-life and how he designs outside of trend while using the combination of cyclical fashion and innovating performance technology to be on-trend in the future. He explains the collaborative ecosystem between the roles that make a piece of apparel happen and how he allows himself to explore new ideas within its boundaries and restrictions. Adam reminisces on feeling completely unprepared right before graduating college, how exhausting applying for jobs is, and his strategy on faking it to land a job. Lastly, we dig into his creative process, abandoning the idea of perfection and how hard it is to let a side project be a thing instead of trying to make it A THING.

The Pupil Becomes The Master... In this episode, Paula Wallace takes us to Paris and the halls of Jean-Paul Gaultier's revolutionary couturier. After fifty years in fashion, Gaultier recently stepped back from the helm of his eponymous fashion label. For many, Gaultier is the master of high fashion. Students everywhere study his designs and find endless inspiration in his expression, but for Gaultier, that honor belonged to his first mentor: Pierre Cardin. In the SCAD-produced animated short documentary, "Le Futur," Gaultier speaks of his beloved mentor, Cardin, as the highest ambassador for global fashion and as an artist whose every move is punctuated by boundless creativity. Gaultier did not fall far from the Cardin tree, and his bold expression amplifies looks unbound by time.

Tropicalia World Music : special birthday edition

Tropicalia World Music : special birthday edition

    itunes pic

Paralamas do sucesso, Frejat, Roberta Sa, Paul Haig, Robert Palmer, The Pretenders, Marvin Gaye, Romulo Froes, Meta Meta, Michel Polnareff, Charlelie Couture, Véronique Sanson, Nevilton, Os Tribalistas, Van Halen, The Who, Joe Jackson, Ed Motta, Michel Jonasz, Stevie Wonder, William Sheller, Brian Eno, David Bowie, and 9, or 10, or 11...(I don’t remember) more songs!

In 2003, Tropicalia MPB was born on Radio Judaica Belgium and on the site of the station. It was the12th of August. A few years earlier, your humble host was born the same date of the summer. But this is the commemoration of the program! If I were to count the years of Pirate Radio, we can go back to 1979. And it wasn’t until 2000 that I decided to divulgate Brazilian music, on South American, Portuguese and Spanish radios, in Belgium. But 2003 means a more important step and status in a radio, one of the most important independent stations, this famous August 12 2003, date where it was renamed, for a better understanding in frensh “Tropicalia MPB”.

This birthday edition, as for Tropicalia Worldmusic 1, it blends in a homogeneous way various cultures during two hours, where the animator only intervenes at the beginning. The titles will soon be available on the blog and site. More information little by little, but the opportunity to share with you, my ‘eternal classic pop songs’, I hope, with artists that those who follow programs already know with me my pleasure! Be my guest, enjoy, it will be the best present for the program, with some names as… Paralamas do sucesso, Frejat, Roberta Sa, Paul Haig, Robert Palmer, The Pretenders, Marvin Gaye, Romulo Froes, Meta Meta, Michel Polnareff, Charlelie Couture, Véronique Sanson, Nevilton, Os Tribalistas, Van Halen, The Who, Joe Jackson, Ed Motta, Michel Jonasz, Stevie Wonder, William Sheller, Brian Eno, David Bowie, and 9, or 10, or 11...(I don’t remember) more songs!

Em 2003, nasceu Tropicalia MPB na Rádio Judaica Bélgica e na Internet. Foi um 12 de agosto. Alguns anos antes, nessa mesma data, nasceu o vosso humilde animador. Avec/ with/ com, entre outros: Paralamas do sucesso, Frejat, Roberta Sa, Paul Haig, Robert Palmer, The Pretenders, Marvin Gaye, Romulo Froes, Meta Meta, Michel Polnareff, Charlelie Couture, Véronique Sanson, Nevilton, Os Tribalistas, Van Halen, The Who, Joe Jackson, Ed Motta, Michel Jonasz, Stevie Wonder, William Sheller, Brian Eno, David Bowie, and 9, or 10, or 11...(I don’t remember) more songs!

Episode 29: Eric Gaskins - Fashion Designer

Episode 29: Eric Gaskins - Fashion Designer
In this episode, I get schooled by fashion designer Eric Gaskins who spend 35 years in the industry. He was trained by Givenchy, he designed for Koos Van Den Akker, and then his own label. Sometime in the early aughts he started the anonymous and notoriously biting fashion blog "The Emperor's Old Clothes" for which he outted himself when he retired from the industry in 2009. Come along for the ride and learn something with me about how craft and artistry have been lost in the fashion world.
