60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: When Is the Trail Not a Trail?

60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: When Is the Trail Not a Trail?

Hello to you listening in Danvers, Massachusetts!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.

These past 9 months or so have felt like the dark night of the soul, over and over and over again. Think the movie Groundhog Day. If this is a crisis of faith, I would say, how do I find the way out? Where is the trail? But, what if there’s another way? As in this poem by Gary Snyder:

The Trail Is Not a Trail

    I drove down the Freeway

And turned off at an exit

    And went along a highway

Til it came to a side-road

    Drove up the side-road

Til it turned to a dirt road

    Full of bumps, and stopped.

    Walked up a trail

    But the trail got rough

    And it faded away—

    Out in the open,

Everywhere to go.”  ["The Trail Is Not a Trail" by Gary Snyder, from Left Out in the Rain. © North Point Press, 1986.]

We Need To Talk About Deconstruction

We Need To Talk About Deconstruction
Deconstruction: What is it? Should it worry us or is it a natural part of our walk with Jesus? How do we support those who are going through it or have gone through it? On this episode we tackle all of this as well as the baggage around the term "deconstruction" in both Christian and secular culture as well as providing some helpful resources for wherever you are on your faith journey.

60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: Never, Ever Quit as Unreasonable as it Seems

60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: Never, Ever Quit as Unreasonable as it Seems

Hello to you still listening in Kyiv, Ukraine!

Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday with your host, Diane Wyzga.

I look at the whole wide world and wonder, “Really? Is this the best we can do?” And yet, here in my own neighborhood we are no different. So, I ask the questions, seek to hear through the craziness, and remind myself that when I stand for something I will not fall for just anything.

As my dear friend and colleague Brandi Heather said to me in a recent crisis of faith: “Never, ever, quit as unreasonable as it seems!”

Someone else who did not quit, as unreasonable as that seemed, was  Martin Niemöller (1892–1984) a prominent Lutheran pastor and a complicated figure in German history. He emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps. He is perhaps best remembered for his postwar words, “First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out— because I was not a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew. Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.”

Question: The reasonable thing is not usually the right thing. What if we don’t do what’s reasonable? What if we act from that place where we are our very best, unreasonable, unquenchable selves? Seek that place!

    Encore Walking Through the Darkness

    Encore Walking Through the Darkness
The darkness has come. Not, of course, for the first time, nor will it be the last, but the question is: What do we do with this darkness? And the only true answer is that we must learn how to walk through darknesses of all kind without losing our faith. That means we must learn how to not only walk through but receive the many gifts that the darkness will ultimately give us. We are in the midst of a pandemic, an economic crisis, a crisis regarding racial discrimination and abuse, a political crisis, a crisis of faith and a climate crisis. Any one of which would be distressing and disturbing, but all of which are happening at the same time. How do we as a collective perceive this? How do we get through it? How do we as individuals perceive this? And how does each individual get through it? Tune in to this show to learn how to walk through the darkness.

Spiritual Recovery for a Special Needs Mom – Diane Dokko Kim

Spiritual Recovery for a Special Needs Mom – Diane Dokko Kim

When parents first learn that their child has a disability, their hearts and hopes are often broken. But their faith doesn’t have to be. On this episode of the podcast, Crystal Keating is sitting down with Diane Dokko Kim. Diane is the mother of two sons, one of whom is on the autism spectrum, and author of the book Unbroken Faith: Spiritual Recovery for the Special Needs Parent. She’s sharing her journey as a special mom, the personal and spiritual crises she faced following her son’s diagnosis, and her struggle to reconcile faith with disappointment. Speaking openly about the doubts and fears that many parents may be too afraid to voice, Diane’s biblical encouragement will help any mom or dad understand that you aren’t alone. God gets it and His word is relevant to the messy and hopeful spaces of special needs parenting.

Whether by diagnosis, disillusionment, a death—or the death of a dream—everyone gets “crippled” by something. God’s purpose is your transformation into greater Christlikeness and closeness with Him. You are His masterpiece in progress. Brokenness may steal, kill, and destroy indiscriminately. But Jesus is an equal opportunity Healer and Redeemer.

Finding Courage When There Are No Answers: A Father’s Perspective - Steve Bundy

Finding Courage When There Are No Answers: A Father’s Perspective - Steve Bundy

Like most parents, Steve Bundy was not expecting his child to be born with a disability. Following Caleb’s diagnosis of partial chromosome deletion, Steve felt so alone – he didn’t know where to turn or who would understand. On this week’s episode, he shares a father’s perspective on a road that few parents would choose to travel. But, as Steve eventually discovered, it's a road that has a destination. He talks with Crystal about the hardest, most painful, and most joyful years he could have imagined, and the courage and healing he found through his son’s disability. If you’re a parent, especially a father wrestling with fears and doubts about your child, know that you are not alone. Listen to Steve’s encouragement and advice for any father, then download a free chapter of his book, Another Kind of Courage, co-authored by Doug Mazza.
