'Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bronx Is Burning': New York City in the 1970s

The Bronx in the 1970s was a perfect storm of things going wrong in New York City: poor urban planning, white flight, budget cuts to municipal and social services, and discriminatory practices coverged into a pressure cooker -- and the outcome was fiery and devastating. But we can't talk about the Bronx burning without ending on the phoenix that emerged from the rubble: the birth of hip-hop.

Chris Shurian: Ditch the guilt & be patient with your process.

Chris Shurian: Ditch the guilt & be patient with your process.

Today I am talking to Chris Shurian who was an absolute pleasure! His way of story telling captures your heart and engages your mind.

Come join us as Chris shares about his journey through joining the church, he was not raised in the LDS church, to going on a mission, getting married  in the temple to later on leaving the mormon religion because he started asking questions within himself. Questions like, why am I going to church today? Why am I putting on a suit?

As Chris trained for an iron man he tells about how the time he had to himself really started allowing space to start asking the questions within himself.

This is another beautiful episode and I am honored to be sharing Chris' story with you all.

The Lindisfarne Tapes are selected recordings of presentations and conversations at the Lindisfarne Fellows’ meetings. In March of 2013 William Thompson granted permission to the Schumacher Center for a New Economics to transfer the talks from the old reel-to-reel tapes to digital format so that they could be posted online and shared freely. In 2021, the Schumacher Center used the digital audio to create the Lindisfarne Tapes Podcast. Reposting should include acknowledgment of williamirwinthompson.org. Spiritual Recovery for a Special Needs Mom – Diane Dokko Kim

Spiritual Recovery for a Special Needs Mom – Diane Dokko Kim

When parents first learn that their child has a disability, their hearts and hopes are often broken. But their faith doesn’t have to be. On this episode of the podcast, Crystal Keating is sitting down with Diane Dokko Kim. Diane is the mother of two sons, one of whom is on the autism spectrum, and author of the book Unbroken Faith: Spiritual Recovery for the Special Needs Parent. She’s sharing her journey as a special mom, the personal and spiritual crises she faced following her son’s diagnosis, and her struggle to reconcile faith with disappointment. Speaking openly about the doubts and fears that many parents may be too afraid to voice, Diane’s biblical encouragement will help any mom or dad understand that you aren’t alone. God gets it and His word is relevant to the messy and hopeful spaces of special needs parenting.

Whether by diagnosis, disillusionment, a death—or the death of a dream—everyone gets “crippled” by something. God’s purpose is your transformation into greater Christlikeness and closeness with Him. You are His masterpiece in progress. Brokenness may steal, kill, and destroy indiscriminately. But Jesus is an equal opportunity Healer and Redeemer.

*Joni and Friends was founded in 1979 by Joni Eareckson Tada who in a diving accident was left a quadriplegic at 17 years old. Ministry began as Tada, joined by friends around her kitchen table, responded to letters she received from people with disabilities in search of support. For more than 40 years, the ministry has grown to serve thousands of people impacted by disability worldwide: Joni and Friends has delivered more than 180,000 wheelchairs and Bibles through Wheels for the World and provided Christian care to 63,000 special needs family members through Family Retreats. The organization also equips individuals and churches with disability ministry training and provides higher education courses through the Christian Institute on Disability. Albert Mohler: Crisis in the Human Heart

Albert Mohler: Crisis in the Human Heart

One of the most important and helpful statements made in the aftermath of the recent horrific mass shootings came by way of the Editorial Board of The Wall Street Journal.

The article is entitled, “The Killers in Our Midst.” The shootings, they write: “are horrifying assaults on peaceful communities by disturbed young men. American politics will try to simplify these events into a debate about guns or political rhetoric, but the common theme of these killings is the social alienation of young men that will be harder to address.”

They point to the fact that this is not a new reality, it is not a reality now that spans several presidential administrations, including presidents of both parties. The motivations of the killers, they observe, are “often too convoluted to sort into any clear ideology.”

So what we’re facing is a cultural crisis, a spiritual crisis, and it begins, as we know, in the human heart.

    The Spirituality of Therapy

    The Spirituality of Therapy
For years, those of us who serve in the mental health field were taught never to mention anything of a religious or spiritual nature. But now many are researching the elements of spirituality inherent in the therapeutic process, and many are researching the benefits of utilizing those natural spiritual elements of therapy. We are finally being encouraged by ethics boards and the core competencies of our field to provide a spiritual assessment and to check for spiritual problems as a part of our efforts to assist our clients. We are beginning to understand such terms as transpersonal, spiritual crisis, spiritual abuse and spiritual wounds. During this show we are going to discuss and explain the spiritual elements of therapy which will result in greater healing. Don't miss it.
