Give Me a Mind Governed by the Spirit

Give Me a Mind Governed by the Spirit

When we are not living with our minds controlled by the Spirit, we fall into sin.  All of us have sinned, and all of us will continue to sin on this side of eternity.  The Bible clearly states that God forgives our sins,  but we often struggle to live in the  reality of that forgiveness.  The practice of confession is necessary to our spiritual growth - not because God needs it; our forgiveness isn’t given because of our confession.  But rather, confession will help us to become the changed and transformed people we long to be.

    Are You Double Minded?

    Are You Double Minded?

Jesus calls His followers to pursue one thing in life.  He calls us to seek His kingdom and His righteousness above all else.  When we do that, we are enabled to allow the pursuit of Him - of knowing Him, loving Him, and seeking His kingdom - to dominate our thoughts, actions, and words.

But most of us have divided loyalties.  We seek the Lord one moment, but seek our own desires the next.  While we want to do one thing, we say or do the opposite.  This double-mindedness prevents us from living the life we want to live.

    Set an Example

    Set an Example

Paul tells the Philippians to “join together in following my example”.  He is not asking them to imitate every detail of his life, for he is not perfect.  But he is asking them to imitate his commitment to Christ.   To what extent do you feel confident in making this same request to those in your life?  What areas of your life would others do well to imitate?  What areas of your life are you not yet ready for others to imitate?

    Be Light

    Be Light

The process of becoming children of God that shine in this world must involve our will, our heart, and our actions.  It’s a matter of allowing our hearts to be changed.  There is a cause-and-effect relationship between our attitudes and behavior.  Wrong attitudes bring forth polluted behavior, making it impossible to be pure.  But God wants his children to be “blameless,” effectively living as lights to others in this world.

Do You Need to Think of Yourself Less

Do You Need to Think of Yourself Less

Pastor Rick Warren says that “Humility is not thinking less of yourself, it’s thinking of yourself less.”  Can you see the distinction?  Humility isn’t about putting yourself down, but rather all about building others up.

What does it mean to give more honor to others than yourself?  If you went through your entire day with this as the guide for your actions and words, what would your day look like?

Are You Creating Habits of Happiness?

Are You Creating Habits of Happiness?

    Philippians 1:1-11

In Rick Warren’s study “The Habits of Happiness,” he says that happiness isn’t something you look for, but rather create.  Happiness is a byproduct of our lives in Christ, and our habits create our happiness.  Happy habits, he says, are just as addicting as bad habits, but a lot more rewarding.  Really think about that for a moment.

Can you think of any bad habits you have that don’t aid in your development of happiness, joy, peace, or character?

    Jesus is Calling You

    Jesus is Calling You

We have the opportunity to walk with Jesus in places we’d never think of going on our own.  There are numerous ways He may call each one of us over the course of our lives to get out of our own “boat” and walk to Him.  And then we  must choose.  Will we stay in the security of our boat, our comfort zone, like the other 11 disciples, or will we take a risk and get out of the boat like Peter so that God can use us in extraordinary ways?
