    What we’re Enjoying

Jay was listening to this podcast called Enjoy Stuff, where a guy named Shua was talking about the Magic Candle Company and their theme park inspired candle scents. He tried the sampler pack that includes Space Coaster, Haunted, Pirate Life, and Extraterrestrial. They’re a unique and pleasant candle that both guys recommend. Shua checked out a very well done stop motion animation movie on Netflix called Wendell and Wild by Jordan Peele and Henry Selick. A spooky and dark (not to mention fun) movie that features demons, zombies, and redemption. Plus, one of the crew members was friend of the show Hunter Wahl who was one of the talented puppet painters on the crew. Check it out on Netflix.

    Sci-Fi Saturdays/MCU Location Scout

Sci-Fi Saturdays is back with a look at a fun romp in space with Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, and Chris Tucker. Written and directed by Luc Besson, it has gained a large following over the years with it’s beautiful design and fun action story. Check it out on RetroZap.com

    Enjoy Music!

Weird Al Yankovic got his start at an early age when his mom bought him an accordion from a door-to-door salesman. With that and his passion for the Dr. Demento show, his creativity began to thrive with parodies of other songs.

His crazy, unique style began to grow in popularity with repeated playings of his early songs like My Bologna and I Love Rocky Road on Dr. Demento, and soon he had a record deal. That led to several other albums, videos, cameos in movies, and even a movie of his own.

He is only one of five artists that have had a Top 40 single in each of the last four decades. Lin-Manuel Miranda has said he was an influence on writing Hamilton. His crazy, fun work has truly made a unique difference in our culture.

The new biopic called Weird: The Al Yankovic story is out now, starring Daniel Radcliffe as Weird Al. A wild (and totally “accurate”) account of Al’s life and rise to fame. Featuring Evan Rachel Wood as Madonna and Rainn Wilson as Dr. Demento, it’s the perfect example of Al’s work.

Do you like Weird Al? What are some of your favorite songs? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Dare to Be Stupid” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com

Enjoy Stuff: Anything (and Everything) Goes

Turn your Temple of Doom into a Temple of Enjoy as we look at the classic Indy Sequel from 1984. Jovial Jay and Shua share a delicious dinner of monkey brains and eyeball soup on Enjoy Stuff!

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom wasn’t just a gross out movie with dark action that was a catalyst for developing a PG-13 movie rating…it also had Short Round. But really it is an underrated Indy movie with lots of great stuff. And Ke Huy Quan is back in a new movie after being away from Hollywood for a long time.

    What we’re Enjoying

Jay was inspired by an Enjoy Stuff episode and rewatched The Good Place. It’s still a thought-provoking series with humor and great themes. Shua is reading some pulp fiction in the form of a Star Trek novel. ‘The Vulcan Academy Murders” by Jean Lorrah is a goofy, fun Star Trek Murder mystery from 1984.

This week he looks at the 1993 Sylvester Stallone and Wesley Snipes sci-fi movie ‘Demolition Man’.  If for no other reason, you should read this article to find out the secret of the 3 shells. And make sure to check out MCULocationScout.com for some Moon Knight locations and soon, more Dr. Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

    Enjoy movies!

Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom! The second Indy outing came at an interesting time in Steven Spielberg’s and George Lucas’s life. They were both dealing with bad relationship breakups and it manifested itself in the darkest Indy story we ever got.

But all that gross out fun and dark themes sure appealed to teenage Jay and teenage Shua. We revisit all the things that we loved about this movie and some interesting trivia.

Short Round was a beloved character that came from this film. Ke Huy Quan owned the role and it looked like he had a long future in Hollywood ahead of him. But other than the Goonies, he all but disappeared from our screens. Now he’s back in an A24 film called ‘Everything, Everywhere, All at Once’. It’s an impressive performance too, and a wild ride.

What did you think of ‘Temple of Doom’? Was it too dark for your taste? Did you read all the way to the bottom? First person that emails me with the subject line, “No time for love, Dr. Jones” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2' (featuring Ryan McQuade)

It all ends (finally). But now Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 has brought the saga of The Boy Who Lived to an appropriately epic conclusion. Guest Ryan McQuade returns to the show to help us bid farewell to Harry, Ron, Hermione, and She-Who-Must-Not-Be Named with our very last episode on the Harry Potter series. Coming in 2021: we enter the ring with Sylvester Stallone, Michael B. Jordan, and the Rocky franchise!

    SYNOPSIS

A clash between good and evil awaits as young Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) prepare for a final battle against Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). Harry has grown into a steely lad on a mission to rid the world of evil. The friends must search for the Horcruxes that keep the dastardly wizard immortal. 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1' (featuring Lyndsey Cole)

'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1' (featuring Lyndsey Cole)

2020 is nearing a close. And with it, the Crooked Table Podcast is almost finished with its ill-timed deep dive into the Harry Potter franchise. In 2010's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, the stakes have never been higher. We knew a fresh perspective was required to deliver the exciting, frank conversation this series of episodes needs.

And so Lyndsey Cole joins the show to break down whether this penultimate Harry Potter adventure achieves the epic scope it aims for. We'll discuss which young star is actually the weakest of the three actors, how Deathly Hallows Part 1 emphasizes character over action, and what sequence is perhaps the best bit of filmmaking in the entire series.

The ultimate battle of good and evil -- or at least the lead-up to it -- is afoot. So pull a chair up to the Table and join us for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1.

    SYNOPSIS

Without the guidance and protection of their professors, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) begin a mission to destroy the Horcruxes, the sources of Voldemort's (Ralph Fiennes) immortality. Though they must rely on one another more than ever, dark forces threaten to tear them apart. Voldemort's Death Eaters have seized control of the Ministry of Magic and Hogwarts, and they are searching for Harry -- even as he and his friends prepare for the ultimate showdown.

    076 - Harry Potter & The Sorcerer's Stone [2001]
In 2001 the world saw the live action adaptation of the best selling book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. The books had a huge following even before the movies came out, so the cast and crew had enormous pressure to get this right. Did they do it? Check it out and hear what the guy's think of the first Harry Potter installment and be sure to let us know what YOU think! Check this episode out on YouTube!

'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' (featuring Kai Yaniz)

The end is drawing nearer as our ill-timed Harry Potter series trudges ahead. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince may opt for love-potion hijinks over grim flashbacks. But the movie still gives audiences a delightful turn by Oscar winner Jim Broadbent, potions galore, and a taste of the Harry-Dumbledore buddy movie we could have gotten instead.

Kai Yaniz returns to the show after reading the books for the first time just a year ago. And she has some thoughts on how director David Yates adapts the source material. We'll cover Draco Malfoy's moral dilemma, Voldemort's dark past, and how Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince keys up the epic two-part conclusion to The Boy Who Lived's magical saga.

    SYNOPSIS

As Death Eaters wreak havoc in the Muggle and Wizard worlds, Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for students. Though Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) suspects there are new dangers lurking within the castle walls, Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) is more intent than ever on preparing the young wizard for the final battle with Voldemort. Meanwhile, teenage hormones run rampant through Hogwarts, presenting a different sort of danger. Love may be in the air, but tragedy looms, and Hogwarts may never be the same again.

'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' (featuring Amy Otero)

'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' (featuring Amy Otero)

The real-life political climate bleeds into the Wizarding World this week. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is very much a political commentary. So guest Amy Otero and I did our very best to stay focused on the movie at hand. As it turned out, neither of us realized just how relevant director David Yates' first Harry Potter movie would be.

If Year Four represents Harry's loss of innocence, then this next film sees the boy wizard and his friend brave the dark and complex real world for the very first time. We'll talk about how Dumbledore's Army speaks to today's world, why Imelda Staunton's Dolores Umbridge is worse than Lord Voldemort, and what Luna Lovegood (Evanna Lynch) brings to the group.

So get ready to be inducted into a secret society of wizard revolutionaries because darkness is on the rise. It's Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

    SYNOPSIS

Now in his fifth year at Hogwarts, Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) learns that many in the wizarding community do not know the truth of his encounter with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes). Fearing Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) is after his job Cornelius Fudge (Robert Hardy), minister of magic, appoints Dolores Umbridge (Imelda Staunton), as Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher at Hogwarts. But her teaching is deficient and her methods cruel. So Harry prepares a group of students to defend the school against a rising tide of evil.

This month, we're taking a look at the fourth entry in the Harry Potter series, 2005's Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. As fans know, this is the entry where the stakes really kick into gear, propelling towards the inevitable conclusion.

So to help us break down the pivotal installment of Harry's story, original Crooked Table Podcast co-host Freddy Yaniz joins us. We'll discuss how the film's many shocking twists, why the relationship drama matters, and when exactly viewers are supposed to suspect what's really going on at the Triwizard Tournament.

So grab your Portkey, steer clear of hedge mazes, and sharpen up your Expeliarmus skills as The Boy Who Lived comes face to face with destiny in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire!

    SYNOPSIS

The fourth Harry Potter movie sees Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) returning to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Along with his friends, Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), it's another year of magic and mystery. Hogwarts hosts a tournament between three schools, with one participant selected from each school by the Goblet of Fire.
