Guest: Matthew Hart of Soter Analytics on preventing peak season injuries; Tech companies answer the call; A new last-mile delivery king is crowned

Our guest on this week's episode is Matthew Hart, founder and CEO of Soter Analytics. This is the season of gift giving. And many of those gifts are online retail orders that have to be delivered by parcel carriers. Along with increasing volumes comes the risk of more injuries to delivery workers, especially among part-time or seasonal workers not used to increased physical activity. How can these potential injuries be prevented? Our guest offers some insight on protecting workers while keeping them even more productive.

From the warehouse to the road, logistics operations are ripe for technology solutions that make it easier for shippers and carriers to get orders where they need to go. New entrants to the market are answering the call. In a December article, Victoria Kickham takes a close look at three companies are providing specific solutions for transportation, warehousing, and labor-related challenges.

There is a new king of last-mile deliveries. Ben Ames discusses how one major retailer has surpassed both UPS and FedEx in the number of parcels it delivers and what it means to the industry.

ICYMI: Todd Skiles of Ryder System on transitioning military veterans into the workforce; What kind of services are e-commerce customers willing to pay to receive? Companies struggle to find seasonal workers.

Today we're repeating our Nov. 11 episode on attracting and hiring military veterans for those who might have missed it. We'll be back next week with a new episode.

    ------------------------------

Our guest on this week's episode is  Todd Skiles, senior vice president of global sales and supply chain solutions at Ryder System. Today in the United States we honor military veterans for their service to our nation. Once their time in the armed forces has concluded, veterans must transition back to civilian life, including finding suitable employment. Skiles, a veteran himself, shares what Ryder does to help other veterans make a leap into supply chain careers.

After years of experience with ordering products online at Amazon and other vendors, most consumers have come to expect free shipping on their e-commerce purchases – but is that a sustainable model? At the same time, there are other services that are important enough to consumers that they may be willing to pay to receive them.

Black Friday is just around the corner, meaning that we are facing peak season for most retailers and many other companies. Employers note that it has been difficult this year to find the usual army of seasonal workers that they rely on to get them through most peak times. For those workers who are available, what will convince them to on-board with a particular company?

DC Velocity's sister publication CSCMP's Supply Chain Quarterly  offers a podcast series called Supply Chain in the Fast Lane.  It is co-produced with the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals. The third season of eight episodes has launched with new episodes each Tuesday . The focus this season is on attracting and retaining labor in our supply chains.  Go to your favorite podcast platform to subscribe.

Guest: Gregg Healy from Savills discusses the holiday peak season; Greater focus on last mile logistics; More commitments to transition to zero-emission vehicles

Our guest on this week's episode is Gregg Healy, the head of Industrial Service for North America with the commercial real estate firm Savills. Most retailers admit that this will not be the typical holiday peak season. They have lots of inventory and we are now seeing peak season stretching out well ahead of the traditional Black Friday start. What has changed this year and why?

More companies are focusing on the importance of last-mile delivery to their overall business– a factor that is giving logistics a seat at the table in the C-suite and the boardroom. We look at current trends that will define last-mile delivery in 2023 and beyond.

Yesterday, we saw a big step toward a greener future when the Biden Administration joined other nations in endorsing a global plan to move toward zero-emissions trucks and buses for all new vehicles sold starting in 2040. This international group agreement was signed at the COP27 diplomatic meeting in Egypt. What is the reaction from the logistics industry towards this new national goal?

Guest: Aaron Hageman on last-mile deliveries; Imports continue to surge; Supply chain companies celebrate Earth Day by sharing their sustainable initiatives.

In this episode, guest Aaron Hageman, CEO of Delivery Drivers Inc. (DDI), discusses trends in last-mile logistics. The supply chain industry calls that final delivery to a person's home or business "the last mile" of the shipment chain. It is usually the most expensive part of logistics, as each package must be handled separately, in contrast to the aggregate handling of previous steps. Hageman discusses how drivers are found to make such deliveries and what is being done by shippers to assure timely delivery of our orders.

The Covid-19 pandemic is driving a huge surge in imported products, and that is affecting the real estate markets for warehouses in seaport areas. It is also creating huge demand for certain imported products.

This past Thursday was Earth Day, a day the world reflects on our environment and what we can do to be more friendly to the planet we all live on. Many logistics and supply chain companies took time this week to celebrate their own green initiatives and to commit to new sustainable practices.

Fleet management and Electric Vehicles - a chat with Amply Power's Simon Lonsdale

Fleet management and Electric Vehicles - a chat with Amply Power's Simon Lonsdale

On this episode of the Digital Supply Chain podcast, I spoke with Simon Lonsdale, co-founder and head of sales and strategy for Amply Power (@AmplyPower on Twitter). Amply is a US based company in the commercial fleet space, specialising in managing the fuelling of electric vehicles (be they cars, vans, trucks, buses, or any other type of commercial electric vehicle).

Simon spoke about how Amply's business model is a pay per mile driven one, how Amply can help its customers drive down the cost of transportation for organisations by intelligently managing the charging of its electric vehicles, demand side management, and where available applying carbon credits to the electricity used for the vehicles.

We had a fascinating conversation, and I particularly liked Simon's point near the end about the extra value Amply can bring its customers, by unlocking the feeling data. Something not available for users of internal combustion engines - listen for yourselves, and let me know what you think.

Digital Supply Chain and the advances in warehousing - with Neil Patel of MSCG (aka @mscg_llc)

My guest on this episode of the Digital Supply Chain podcast is Neil Patel. Neil is the Managing Partner at My Supply Chain Group (@MSCG_LLC on Twitter). So far on this Digital Supply Chain podcast series, we haven’t really talked about warehousing, and the huge changes we have seen in this area in the last few years so I wanted Neil to come on the show to talk about this key aspect of supply chains.

I asked Neil to introduce himself, which he did at 00:27

Then at 00:55 I asked Neil to set a bit of context by telling us how he defines a digital supply chain

At 01:43 I asked Neil to outline the tumultuous changes he has witnessed in warehousing in the last decade

At 4:30 I asked Neil if the changes are happening in any one space more than any other

At 06:11 I asked Neil what were the options companies have to speed up their warehousing

Then at 08:04 I asked how much the automation of warehouses is hardware, and how much is software

At 10:11 I asked Neil to talk about some of the other interesting innovations he has seen in the warehouse space

At 12:55 I asked if this implied organisations are increasing their warehouse footprint

At 14:31 I asked Neil to do my Futurist job for me and to tell me what the next 5-10 year hold for the warehouse industry

Finally, at 16:21 I asked Neil if there was any question I hadn’t Neil that I should have
