    S1E13: Margaret Brown and Descendant

    S1E13: Margaret Brown and Descendant

Today we are talking with the very talented Margaret Brown about her latest documentary, Descendant.

On July 9, 1860, more than 100 captive Africans were brought to the shores of Mobile, Alabama, on a ship named the Clotilda, under cover of darkness. The international slave trade had been made illegal in the US in 1808, but human trafficker Timothy Meaher made a bet that he could get around the law with his ship. Today, the residents of Africatown, just north of Mobile, count the Clotilda survivors among their ancestors.

The documentary Descendant, brings their stories to light as they grapple with a growing spotlight on their community following the discovery of the sunken Clotilda. The film shows how events that unfolded more than a century ago continue to have lasting repercussions several generations later.

Brown produced the film alongside Kyle Martin and Essie Chambers for Participant and Take One Five Entertainment. The film premiered at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, where it was picked up by Higher Ground Productions and Netflix for theatrical and streaming distribution. The film was shortlisted for the 2023 Academy Awards, and you can watch it now on NETFLIX. The film currently has a perfect 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Descendant was released to select theaters and on Netflix on October 21, 2022.

You can also keep up with Africatown via the Clotilda Descendants Association.

A number of the subjects featured in Descendant are quoted in this Smithsonian article, which details the search for the wreckage of the Clotilda.

You can help Africatown’s community organizations preserve the legacy of their ancestors, combat environmental injustice and spur economic transformation. Learn more about the organizations and ways to get involved here.

    Astrologiens briller

    #037 The Houses: 1&7 | The Ascendant–Descendant Axis

    #037 The Houses: 1&7 | The Ascendant–Descendant Axis

In this week’s episode I discuss the ascendant and descendant, also known as the relationship axis.

The ascendant is directly opposite the Descendant and the connecting line between these two points marks the horizon where we see the Sun rise in the East and set in the West. This is why the ascendant is also known as the rising sign.

The Ascendant is one third of the “Big Three” (the Sun and Moon making up the other two thirds) making it a pretty big deal in astrology.

It says a lot about who we are and how we approach the world, revealing various aspects of our personality, outlook, appearance, birth and early life, and how we appear to and interact with others.

Join me as I explore this crucial axis in the charts of celebrities and subscribers.

#036 The Wheel of the Horoscope

During this week's episode I talk about the wheel of the horoscope and cover some aspects which are very quick to identify and interpret, based on where planets are located in the chart.

The chart can be broken up into hemispheres, horizons and quadrants which can reveal a lot about how we view the world and how we interact with the world around us.

I decided not to interpret any subscriber charts this week and ask you to observe which planets you have in certain sectors of your chart, and whether you agree with some of the points made during the episode – If you do, let me know by getting in touch with me!

Ep. 90 - Descendants Can't Hide From Puzzilla! And DNA Triangulating Part 2

Fisher opens the show talking about the huge response to last week's program about DNA triangulation used to assist listener Shelley Smith identify her birth father, after more traditional means, including DNA, helped her identify her birth mother.  Fisher provides an update on what has since happened to Shelley, who has contacted both a half-sister (from the birth mother's side) and a half-brother (from the birth father's side.)  Interestingly, another listener has come along to talk about using the same technique to identify ancestors born in the late 1700s.  Jeanne Nicholson talks about her experience later in the show.  In Family Histoire News, Flooding in Oklahoma has reveal the body of a 40-year-old man.  Fisher will tell you what makes him so unusual.  Fisher then reveals that yet another British monarch may be hidden beneath yet another parking lot!  Who is it, and what is the likelihood we'll have another Richard III on our hands? Fisher will tell you about it.

Bill Harten, creator of Puzzilla then joins Fisher.  Puzzilla is a remarkable free tool that can help you identify descendants of your ancestors.  It's almost like flying over a forest to see where all the campgrounds are!  Where and how can you use this amazing tool?  Find out in Segment Two.

Jeanne Nicholson of Tennessee is new to Extreme Genes, and checks in to talk about how she used DNA triangulation to identify the parents of an ancestor that she has been searching for for years.  Yes, triangulation isn't just for tying in to the living!

Then Tom Perry, the Preservation Authority from TMCPlace.com, answers a listener question about why her videos and pictures are suddenly coming out "blue!"

That's all this week on Extreme Genes, America's Family History Show!
