Giving the Gift of You: Dying to Self with Father Jon Meyer, Chaplain of Mamas in Spirit

Giving the Gift of You: Dying to Self with Father Jon Meyer, Chaplain of Mamas in Spirit

Learn how to give your life away like Christ and live in the profound freedom and joy of the Lord.

In this Easter podcast, Chaplain Father Jon Meyer and Lindy Wynne share personal stories about their experiences of dying to self and discovering the supernatural love of God. Father Jon explores his call into priesthood, while Lindy speaks of the ways she has been sharpened as a mother (Lindy is a mother through adoption and two of her children have special needs).

We are called to self-gift in both our Vocational calls, as well as little dyings to self in our daily lives. May we be emptied of ourselves so that God can fill us with just what we need to love beyond measure.

Make Small Sacrifices for a Big Change

Make Small Sacrifices for a Big Change
Making small sacrifices is not just for Lent, because sacrifices and penance are necessary. As Christ said: “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me” (Luke 9:23). And this is true all year long. But when Jesus said to deny yourself, he didn’t mean to always go against what you want. Really. He meant there are things I want that will not make me more like him—a lot of things, actually. So following him often means dying to self by denying myself those things. Mortifications—little deaths to self—make us more like Jesus and can be offered up for the sanctification of the world and others. Mortification can come in many different forms. It’s not always denying yourself something you want. Sometimes it means doing something you don’t want. Sloth or greed can cause us to not do things we should do. Choosing not to be slothful or greedy often means doing something for someone else—and this is a little death to self. Love is the not-so-secret ingredient that helps us die to self. The entire gospel and Jesus’ life are about love. He is constantly telling us and showing us how to love one another and God. That’s because when we learn to love, dying to self becomes so much easier since we start living for God and others. Life is hard when we’re selfish, but when we live for love we see what Christ means when he says “my yoke is easy, and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). I love this time of year. Truly, I do. I love the sights, sounds, flavors, and general excitement of November and December. For starters, I love the changing of the leaves. The brown, orange, yellow, and red leaves covering the trees, is beautiful to me. Think about it though, when we say, "Those trees look beautiful" what is taking place for the beauty to occur? Death. The leaves are dying. In the autumn, because of changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process. The chlorophyll breaks down and the green color disappears. The leaves are dying. Galatians 2:20 - "I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, Who loved me and gave Himself for me." -Paul *-Matthew 10:37-39 - "Anyone who loves his father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me; anyone who loves his son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me; and anyone who does not take up his cross and follow Me is not worthy of Me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for My sake will find it." *-Mark 8:34-38 - "If anyone would come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me. For whoever wants to save his life (or soul) will lose it, but whoever loses his life for Me and for the Gospel will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? If anyone is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in His Father's glory with the holy angels." -Jesus, addressing a crowd along with His disciples. *-Luke 14:25-35 - Do we understand the cost of following Jesus? -John 15:5 - "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing. with John 5:19 - "I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by Himself; He can only do what He sees His Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does." -Jesus John 5:30 - "By Myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and My judgment is just, for I seek not to please Myself but Him Who sent Me." -Jesus What does it mean to die to self? This will be our focus. Tyler Woodham Associate Pastor

    The Cost of Discipleship

    The Cost of Discipleship
A true encounter with God will cost you everything! Yes, His grace is free but pursuing Him will cost you greatly. Satan loves to offer up religion that looks like an encounter but there is a huge difference. Religion will cost you nothing. In the American Church cheap grace is offered as an alternate to the real costly grace delivered by God. What has your walk with God cost you?
