Book | Castle Defenders: What Do Cyber Parents Do? | A Pentera Brand Story with Aviv Cohen

Join Sean Martin and Aviv Cohen as they embark on a fascinating exploration of the often misunderstood world of cybersecurity. They discuss the importance of recognizing cybersecurity professionals as the modern-day heroes they are, and the need for children to understand and appreciate their parents' roles in this field.

Cohen introduces a unique tool to bridge this understanding gap - a beautifully illustrated book titled "Castle Defenders: What Do Cyber Parents Do?". The book, written in engaging rhyme, uses the metaphor of a castle needing defense to explain the complex world of cybersecurity to children. It serves not only as a bedtime story but also as a platform for parents to discuss online safety and cybersecurity literacy with their children.

The book has been met with enthusiastic feedback, with parents sharing their experiences of reading it to their children, and children asking for repeated readings. It also includes ten cybersecurity rules, providing children with practical tools to stay safe online.

The conversation underscores the urgent need for more cyber defenders in our world and the importance of fostering understanding and respect for this role from a young age.

This episode is a must-listen for anyone interested in the intersection of technology, cybersecurity, and society, and especially for those who wish to inspire the next generation of cyber defenders.

About the Book: Castle Defenders: What Do Cyber Parents Do?

Mommy is late for dinner again, and Emma and Oliver are frustrated. Castle Defenders by Dana Meschiany is a charming story, filled with delightful illustrations and playful storytelling, is perfect for young minds eager to explore the captivating world of cybersecurity.

How can Family Businesses Stay Safe in the Digital Age?

How can Family Businesses Stay Safe in the Digital Age?

On this episode of the Family Business Voice, Philip Grindell, CEO of Defuse Global, and Ramia talk about how family businesses can stay safe in the digital age.

Philip Grindell’s background as a Scotland Yard Detective with time spent seconded to British Intelligence gives him an in-depth view on just what can happen in unsafe situations. And now, he’s applying those insights to the world of private security, helping family business members, politicians and other high-profile clients stay safe both online and in-person.

    • Safety starts with people. Regardless of the type of threat a family business has to deal with, that threat originates from a person on the other end, and a person in the business must let that threat in — knowingly or unknowingly. As such, businesses should vet their employees thoroughly and check in with them regularly to make sure they are doing everything they can to keep the organisation safe. Check more than just a possible recruit’s experience or skills; check their associations and their potential to heighten risk.
    •  Businesses should consider implementing safety governance. Even a few simple regulations can go a long way. Some examples of good safety governance are: changing passwords regularly and not using third-party hardware with unknown providence (thumb-drives from tradeshows, for instance).
    • Start the conversation around safety before circumstance necessitates it. Only by encouraging a culture that recognises threats, whether physical, reputational or psychological, as real and serious can family businesses mitigate those threats when they arise.

Why Do Kids Hire Porn? With Kristen Jenson [65]

Why Do Kids Hire Porn? With Kristen Jenson [65]

Kids hire pornography for a variety of jobs to help them grow up, and the surprising thing is it makes sense. Creed and Crishelle talk with Kristen Jenson, author of Good Pictures Bad Pictures and founder of Protect Young minds, about this unusual way of understanding kids. She did a study with 10 young people who had a history of porn use. They found 4 categories of jobs that kids hired porn to do:

    1. Knowledge about sex
    2. Escaping from stressful emotions
    3. Normalizing sexual abuse
    4. Rebelling in a safe way

    In this episode:

    • Kids need to learn how to be adults and they’re trying to make progress and grow up.
    • Talk with kids earlier than you think and teach them to manage their emotions.

Porn + Predators | Rob and Zareen Cope

Porn + Predators | Rob and Zareen Cope

Few thoughts are as daunting to parents as the potential impact, damage, and prevalence of pornography in the lives of modern kids. While we’d like to think it mostly lives in hard-to-reach corners of the internet, the reality is that it’s only a few clicks away. But rather than let that fact frighten us away from the topic, we want to encourage parents to approach it straight-on, and our guests on this episode of Screen Sanity have done excellent work in helping us consider how to do so.

Rob and Zareen Cope are parents from New Zealand and the producers of the documentary “Our Kids Online: Porn, Predators, and How to Keep Them Safe.” They join START co-founder Krista Boan to talk about the origins of the documentary, the harm that porn is causing a generation, and practical ideas for protecting and educating our kids.

Screen Sanity is Executive Produced by Krista Boan and START.

It is produced and edited by Mike Cosper for Cosper Productions.

#37 Live.ly App Is Not Safe For Teens (Parent App Guide) - SmartSocial Podcast with Josh Ochs

Live.ly is a video streaming app from the creators of Musical.ly where users can broadcast live video or video chat with friends. With reports of students using the app to play truth or dare and share personal information with strangers, we created this guide to help parents keep students safe.

    Guest info:
    Josh Ochs, Founder of https://SmartSocial.com

Live.ly is a live video streaming app from the creators of Musical.ly where users can broadcast live video or group video chat with their friends.

    What is the Live.ly app?

    • From the creators of Musical.ly, Live.ly is a live video streaming app
    • Users sign up using their Musical.ly, Facebook, or Twitter account
    • Users can broadcast live video or group video chat with their friends
    • Multiple users can live broadcast video together from different locations
    • Unlike Instagram and Snapchat, when a live broadcast is over it cannot be replayed
    • Users also have the ability to comment on videos
    • There is no verification process or age requirement for users to view live videos
    • Since Live.ly is connected to Musica.ly, it’s easy to share content between the apps
    • Users can receive or give emoji “gifts” through the app using real money (prices range $.50-$50)

    Why should parents care?

    • Sometimes students will give out their Snapchat username or phone number during a live video without understanding that strangers watching their video now have their personal information
    • The more money a user spends, the more prominent their username will be in a video’s comments which can turn spending into a competition
    • Even though it’s against the app’s terms of service, it’s not uncommon for students younger than 13 to use this app
    • Some students have been reported as using this app to play “truth or dare”. Users will comment a truth or dare and the student will live stream their response
    • Although users have the ability to report mature content, there is no moderation on the app. Students can run into any type of content – good or bad
    • Live streaming videos can have a serious impact on your student’s privacy and security

What Parents are Saying about the Live.ly app

    • Inappropriate for children. I was doing my usual phone check on our kid’s phone and kept getting notifications for Live.ly. When I checked on it, two different times a group video chat came on with a man [doing something extremely explicit] in one of the cameras. There were kids no older than 10 watching and when they realized there was a grown up watching they clicked off. This is not an app for children! This is as far as I’m concerned just another way for pedophiles to get to kids.
    • Pedophile hunting ground! Do not let your children on here. A child close to me had been approached by a man asking inappropriate questions. It should not be allowed to happen, it’s sick.

    Source

    Live.ly App in the News

"Children as young as nine are being groomed and bombarded with sexually explicit messages on a popular livestreaming app [Live.ly] that has been branded ‘a magnet for paedophiles. - The Times

"Comments [teens] received [on Live.ly] are extremely explicit. - Channel 4 News

"Live.ly has also quickly turned it into a [place] where social media performers angle at cashing in on their elusive celebrity status and fans shell out for the illusion of greater intimacy. – The New York Times

"Live.ly’s overnight success can be linked directly to teens downloading the app based on their already honed obsessions with musical.ly. – New York Magazine

    What can parents do?

    • If your student has the Live.ly app, have them delete it and discuss the app’s safety issues
    • If your teen is interested in apps like Live.ly, consider creating an Instagram account that can be used as a positive social media resume
    • When you’re ready for your student to be online, work with them to use apps that positively impact their digital footprint. Check out our Parent App Guide page and consider using the apps in our Green Zone (and be on all apps your kids are using)
    • Ensure they understand how to use video apps safely before giving your student access to them
    • Teach students to ask themselves if they would want their video seen by colleges, teachers, or parents before posting or streaming
    • Consider joining Parent University to get access to videos you can watch with your student that teaches them how to be safe and shine online
