8 - A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors with Lamar Giles

Today, rockstar author Lamar Giles joins me to explore one of the most notorious neighborhoods in all of horror cinema. Elm Street! With this episode, we've begun Our First Fears's first discussion of Wes Craven's classic film series, but with the second sequel, A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors.

    Wait . . . What?

We talk about how we both came to discover the lore of Freddy Krueger long after the first film came out, about the horrors of working in video rental shops, and about what it means to have a supportive crew while navigating difficult aspects of adolescence. Lamar’s expertise about these films makes this chat an absolute necessary listen for any true fans of A Nightmare on Elm Street. Seriously. The man knows his finger-blades.

Lamar Giles’s highly acclaimed work includes the novels The Getaway, Not So Pure and Simple, Spin, Overturned, Endangered, Fake ID, the Legendary Alston Boys of Logan County series, as well as Epic Ellisons: Cosmos Camp (NOT Cosmic Camp, as I incorrectly call it in the intro) and finally, the upcoming graphic novel Static: Up All Night from DC Comics, with art by Paris Alleyne. Go buy all of his books at your favorite local bookshop, like, right now!

Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise Retrospective with Lisa Wilcox —Episode 120

Nightmare on Elm Street Franchise Retrospective with Lisa Wilcox —Episode 120

When Wes Craven first terrified audiences by unleashing dream demon Freddy Krueger in 1984, no one could have predicted that his film that had to scrape together financing just to get made would ultimately become one of the most successful horror franchises of all time. In the nearly 40 years since the first film was released, the “Nightmare on Elm Street” series has spawned nine total movies while earning more than $474 million at the box office.

The series also managed to create one of the most iconic characters in horror history with fans still scared to fall asleep out of fear that Freddy might get them.

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead as we wrap up our series on the entire “Nightmare on Elm Street” franchise we’re going to take one final look at the house that Freddy built and we welcome a special guest as we interview Lisa Wilcox — the only final girl to truly survive her nightmares….

Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors Review - Episode 104

Nightmare on Elm Street 3: The Dream Warriors Review - Episode 104

Due to the critical failure surrounding “Nightmare on Elm Street 2,” New Line Cinema was hesitant to green light a third film in the franchise but when original creator Wes Craven decided to come back on board to help write the script, the studio decided to move forward with the project.

Craven’s idea centered around a third and final film that would conclude the series, especially considering he didn’t initially plan on making any movies past the first one. His original script actually involved Freddy Krueger crossing over to the real world and tormenting the actors making a “Nightmare on Elm Street” sequel.

The studio shot that down, although Craven eventually got his wish to make that film a few years later. Craven eventually teamed with writer Bruce Wagner to come up with the concept for the film, which initially started out as a much darker take on Freddy and the teens he was going after in their dreams.

Ultimately, the studio opted to go in a different direction with more outrageous dream sequences mixed in with some seriously dark humor. What resulted was a story about a group of kids locked away in a psych ward after each of them dealt with horrendous night terrors but it turns out they were all being haunted by the same man in their dreams…

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to crank up the Dokken and load up on hypnocil as we discuss “Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors”…

    Freddy's Nightmares — Episode 77

    Freddy's Nightmares — Episode 77

Throughout the 1980s, the “Nightmare on Elm Street” film series was one of the most popular horror franchises with fans regularly flocking to the theaters to see what new group of teenagers would be sliced and diced in their dreams by the demonic Freddy Krueger.

After three films with a fourth on the way, New Line Cinema — the studio that produced the “Nightmare on Elm Street” films — decided to take a stab at bringing Freddy to the small screen by developing a new series based around the popular horror villain. Because Freddy was such a killing machine in his movies, the producers opted against a serial season with one continuing storyline, the decision was made to make the show an anthology.

That meant Freddy and by extension the man behind the makeup, Robert Englund, would serve as a host of sorts introducing each episode and then appearing in only a few particular stories during a season. The show ended up serving as a launching pad for many famous careers including Brad Pitt, Kyle Chandler and Bill Camp.

The first episode in the series directed by Tobe Hooper and titled “No More Mr. Nice Guy” actually told the origin story behind child killer Freddy Kreuger and the parents from Elm Street who sought revenge after the legal system failed them.

In the latest episode of Rewind of the Living Dead, we’re going to sharpen our razorblades and dust off our red and green sweaters as we discuss the newly re-released series “Freddy’s Nightmares”…

Plus a special announcement about an upcoming "Nightmare on Elm Street" series on Rewind of the Living Dead!
