5 Ways One Media Placement Led to 1,600 Customers

5 Ways One Media Placement Led to 1,600 Customers

Before I tell you how one media placement led to 1,600 customers for a business, I want to remind you that public relations is not sales. It’s marketing. The sales come afterward.

I don’t like it when people rely on media placements to get sales. Can it happen and does it happen often? Yes. But it’s not sales. It’s marketing… and sales are a side effect of getting attention in the media.

In SparkToro, Amanda Natividad told a story about her time at NatureBox, a snack food brand. She broke down her earned media goals into two buckets - long-term and short-term. One focus was on building a reputation and the other was to try to sell the product.

I love this story for a few reasons and you can replicate what Amanda did by focusing on what she did that worked well.

First, they were ready for conversions. When you’re ready, do these five things.

5 Reasons NOT to Work with a Pay-for-Placement PR Agency

5 Reasons NOT to Work with a Pay-for-Placement PR Agency

This issue has been plaguing the media and public relations industries for years. It’s paying for editorial placements, also known as paying for placement PR.

Any professional will tell you this is wrong and unethical. But the people who want you to hire them will tell you it’s safe and a way to make sure you don’t waste your money. When they say that, they’re just trying to get your money with little regard for their reputation or theirs.

By doing this, a PR agency is guaranteeing results. Right off the bat, that’s a red flag.

First of all, The Federal Trade Commission requires content sponsors to disclose whether they have paid for a third-party review or endorsement. When so-called public relations firms make these specific promises, they may be violating fair-trade practices.

Sometimes, they pitch and only charge you when they land something and call it a day. I’ll get into the problems with this today, but sometimes they also pay people they know who contribute to a place they land the coverage and that’s a whole different, darker story. I’ve done many episodes on this before so those out on the podcast.

The lines get blurred when you hire a publicist and ONLY pay them if and when they land you coverage.

In this podcast episode, I explain why.

When you’re ready, here are three ways I can help you.

    1. Spend less than an hour learning the 5 simple steps to getting featured in the media without spending money on ads. This masterclass is FREE!

    2. In three hours, I’ll teach you how to pitch the media to earn publicity and turn it into profit. Click here to join my bootcamp now.

    3. Are you ready to bring PR in-house? In my Media Mentoring Program, you or a VA can learn how to become a publicist with the skills of a big PR agency.

This is an episode with show notes from the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast.

Back in the day, you know ten years ago, I built some form of media relations into every marketing plan. As digital channels have taken more and more attention, it’s easy to push traditional media coverage aside, but do so at your own risk.

Getting a nice mention in a magazine or newspaper read by your ideal client is an awesome awareness and trust builder, but today it also comes with a high authority website link making it even more potent.

My guest for this week’s episode of the Duct Tape Marketing Podcast is Christina Nicholson. She is a former TV reporter and anchor who is on the other side of the desk these days, helping small businesses tell their stories as the founder of Media Maven

She and I discuss best practices for getting the media’s attention and improving your PR efforts.

Nicholson is an award-winning journalist with more than a decade of experience anchoring, reporting, writing, blogging, video production, editing, excelling in social media, photography, and live TV.

She has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company, the Huffington Post, Time, Yahoo!, PR Daily, All Business Experts, on CNN, WTVJ in Miami, WPTV in West Palm Beach, News 12 in New York City, and many other media outlets.

What you’ll learn if you give a listen:

    • How to create a PR plan as part of an overall marketing plan
    • What role PR plays in personal branding
    • What businesses should look for in a PR firm

The Biggest Opportunity for All Small Business Owners is the PESO Model

The Biggest Opportunity for All Small Business Owners is the PESO Model

Spin Sucks invented (and copyrighted) the PESO Model. I’ve recently been binging all of Gini Dietrich’s stuff… and this is her jam.

It’s an integrated approach to communications that blends paid, earned, shared, and owned media to establish thought leadership, credibility, trust, and authority that fuel a brand reputation.

    P: Paid

    E: Earned

    S: Shared

    O: Owned

Whether you're a marketer, PR professional, or business owner, understanding and implementing this model will improve your marketing strategies.

5 Things on My NOT To-Do List

5 Things on My NOT To-Do List

I love being productive and efficient. Sometimes a NOT to-do list can help you get just as much done if not more.

While traditional to-do lists outline tasks and obligations, a "NOT to do" list allows you to identify and eliminate nonessential or unproductive activities.

By clearly defining what activities should be avoided or minimized, it helps in setting boundaries and staying focused on the most critical tasks.

This approach prevents wasted time and energy on distractions, unimportant commitments, or counterproductive habits.

By consciously avoiding these activities, you can allocate more time and energy towards meaningful, high-priority tasks that contribute to your goals and overall success.

Ultimately, a "NOT to do" list serves as a powerful tool for enhancing efficiency and maximizing productivity.

My 7-Step System That Gets Me Booked on Top Podcasts

My 7-Step System That Gets Me Booked on Top Podcasts

By appearing as a guest on a podcast, individuals can establish themselves as thought leaders and gain credibility within their industry.

Additionally, podcasts allow for meaningful networking opportunities, as hosts and fellow guests may have valuable connections.

Being a podcast guest also contributes to personal branding and visibility, helping individuals reach a larger audience and potentially attract new opportunities or clients.

Furthermore, the long-form nature of podcasts allows for in-depth conversations and the opportunity to showcase personality, which can foster a deeper connection with the audience.

Why you should be a guest on a podcast:

    1. To be introduced to new people
    2. Get leads
    3. To turn leads into sales

    Biggest mistakes people make:

    1. The pitches are too long
    2. Talking points are too generic
    3. Pitches are too promotional

What to do instead? That's what this podcast is all about!

Hire a Coach or Buy an Online Course?

Hire a Coach or Buy an Online Course?

Should you hire a coach or buy an online course? There is a big difference between the two.

Generally speaking, with a coach, you get more individualized help. With a course, it’s a one size fits all model you can go back to over and over again.I mix the two in my Media Mentoring Program.

I’ve done both. Listen to the episode and watch the video from April 18th to go inside my 10 business coaching and mastermind decisions.

I do both. It depends on what my goals are at the time and what the content is. Every coach, mastermind, and course is different. What may be a fit one year won’t be the next year.

5 Things You Need to Have in Place Before You Act Like Your Own Publicist

5 Things You Need to Have in Place Before You Act Like Your Own Publicist

You need to be ready when you’re invited on a podcast or an opportunity comes up you weren’t expecting. If not, you will lose your chance, your competitor can snag it and it may change their business.

Let’s make sure that’s you instead of them.

Last week I talked about two ways to know if you’re ready for PR. Hopefully, you realized you are, so now let’s cover what you need to be ready to land coverage when opportunities come knocking.

These first two I will breeze by because I mentioned them last week.

    1. Are you an expert in something that can help someone? Do you have a product that solves a problem for someone? (If you don’t think you are, go back and listen to or watch  the episode from April 4th on 4 Ways to Beat Imposter Syndrome in Just 15 Minutes.) For more on this from a media perspective, check out the first hour of Pitch Publicity Profit by clicking here.
    2. Do you have a place to send leads? This could be a website, phone number, physical address… even a social media handle for you to start a conversation.

Now, you need to help the journalist do their job by:

    1. Being available ASAP. Willing to work fast.
    2. Having high-resolution images, low-resolution images. Use my link to try out Canva Pro for free to get these things in the right size and format in seconds.
    3. Camera and microphone - airpods and a cellphone work fine!
    4. Sharing power. I don’t mean the size of your audience. I mean the common courtesy to just share what is printed, published, or aired.
    5. The confidence to just do it. Go back and listen to or watch the episode from April 4th for help with this. If idiots can earn coverage, you can too.

2 Ways to Know if You're Ready for PR

2 Ways to Know if You're Ready for PR

I’m shocked at how many people, especially female business owners make excuses for not being ready for PR - to be on a podcast, contribute an article, land a TV interview, etc.

People feel like they’re not ready because of their perception of what they see on the outside.

That perception is exactly why earning media exposure is worth so much - because of the way your audience will perceive you.

People don’t get there because they have lots of money, run a successful business, have a big team, or anything else you may assume.

They got there because they pitched a good idea at the right time. Trust me, that’s better than relationships.

If you answer yes to any of these questions, then you’re ready to earn coverage.

    1. Are you an expert in something that can help someone? Do you have a product that solves a problem for someone? (If you don’t think you are, go back and listen to or watch the episode from April 4th on 4 Ways to Beat Imposter Syndrome in Just 15 Minutes.) I also go into this topic in hour one of my 3-hour bootcamp, Pitch Publicity Profit.
    2. Do you have a place to send leads? This could be a website, phone number, physical address… even a social media handle for you to start a conversation.

That’s it. That’s all you need to earn exposure.

That attention turns into leads. Those leads turn into sales (if you nurture them correctly). That’s how you grow your business. It’s Business 101. Attention > Leads > Sales.

Getting attention is step one. You can’t have the other two without it.

5 Reasons to Just Say NO! to the Forbes Coaches Council

5 Reasons to Just Say NO! to the Forbes Coaches Council

The Forbes Coaches Council will say congratulations… then ask you to pay them to write for them. It’s the opposite of a job.

I’m all about contributing to outlets when it builds your brand infront of your ideal customer or client, but this is different.

Not only is this advertising, but it’s tricky advertising.

While these pay-to-play appearances could impress people who don’t know any better, you’re better off just working a tad harder to earn a contributing role at a popular outlet. Then when you do, leverage that like I did when I contributed at Inc. Magazine.

5 Reasons Why Press Release Distribution is a Scam

5 Reasons Why Press Release Distribution is a Scam

Press release distribution services are tools that allow you to send press releases to a large, targeted audience of journalists, social networks, bloggers, influencers, and traditional or digital media outlets, either automatically or manually.

They will guarantee you coverage… and they’re not wrong. You will get coverage. But what they won’t tell you is that NO ONE WILL SEE IT.

    This is why.

    1. The press release is copied and pasted. That’s it.

    2. The only way to see it is to have a long, convoluted URL.

    3. You don’t get any SEO love from the backlink.

    4. No one looks at the wires.

    5. You have to pay hundreds of dollars for it.

So what do you do instead?

Inside my 10 Business Coaching and Mastermind Decisions

I’m going to tell you who I’ve hired, why, how much I paid, and what I took away from each business coach and mastermind… so buckle up!

I’m not including online courses in this roundup. Those are one-and-done with lifetime access and are not as much as a time and financial investment.

But if you’re wondering, my favorite online courses include one about SEO by Brandon Gaille who now has RankIQ, and Justin Welsh’s on LinkedIn and content creation

4 Ways to Beat Imposter Syndrome in Just 15 Minutes

4 Ways to Beat Imposter Syndrome in Just 15 Minutes

Imposter syndrome is loosely defined as doubting your abilities and feeling like a fraud. It disproportionately affects high-achieving people, who find it difficult to accept their accomplishments.

One study found that about 70% of all people have felt like an imposter at some point. Imposter syndrome often affects those who are highly capable perfectionists.

What does imposter syndrome look like?

You don’t give yourself credit. You may think it’s only a matter of time until the luck runs out, and you're exposed.

You’re in the forest, so you can’t see the trees. As more wins and accomplishments pile up, you aren’t able to clear the cobwebs and look at your achievements for what they really are.

    Ask yourself this:

"If a stranger shared these accomplishments with me, would the logical conclusion be that they are all a stroke of luck and therefore a fraud?” Probably not.

    1. Maybe you have the curse of knowledge blindness.

    2. Maybe you don’t realize we are all constantly learning and can’t possibly know it all all the time.

    3. Maybe you need to take a beat to ponder your accomplishments.

    4. Maybe you need to manifest being a big deal in real life… kinda.

    1. Get your wants and goals in order
    2. Think about them via a vision board, positive affirmations, etc.
