5 Ways to Stop Sabotaging Your Own Public Relations

5 Ways to Stop Sabotaging Your Own Public Relations

You can’t just hire someone to handle your public relations and call it a day. You still need to be involved to make it successful.

I’m going to tell you how people sabotage their own PR, so if you’re doing these things, you stop… or you know better when you’re ready to implement a PR strategy.

    1. You don’t get back to us when we need you to.

The media works on deadlines, so we need to hear from you ASAP. Many times, they take what’s first and won’t wait for what’s best. Also, don’t no-show an interview… because you won’t have another one.

    2. You don’t keep us in the loop.

You know your industry better than we do, so fill us in when big things happen in your niche or at your company so we can spill our news story wheels to see how we can weave you into the narrative and get it some coverage. It could be very helpful to us if you keep an eye out for story ideas!

    3. You have unrealistic expectations.

There needs to be more education in this industry because it’s wild how many people think a.) it’s easy to get wherever you want when you want, b.) how deserving they are to get wherever they want when they want.

    4. You don’t speak in soundbites or good quotes.

A good soundbite is an animated 15-20 seconds of you saying something of value that adds to whatever is being discussed. Think of it as a passionate conversation, not an infomercial. Just because you’re high up on the totem pole at a company, doesn’t mean you’re good at this. Comfort is key.

    5. You don’t understand the news.

It’s not the media’s job to give you a free commercial or promotion. There is a big difference between what is paid and what is earned. Earned media is always going to answer the questions reporters are asked in their morning meeting about why a story is being covered now infront of their audience.

The Real Reason PR Success Takes Time: 5 Key Factors You Need to Know

The Real Reason PR Success Takes Time: 5 Key Factors You Need to Know

Warren Buffett said it takes 20 years to build a reputation. That means PR is a long-term game - not a sprint, but a marathon.

This is why most PR software requires an annual subscription and why most PR agencies require an annual contract.

Trust me, this isn’t to trap you and take your money. It’s just how the industry works.

I’m going to tell you why it works like this and how you can use it to your benefit from my perspective as the owner of a PR agency and someone who helps people do this on their own through my online course and mentoring program.

    1. Your PR firm plants seeds that need time to grow.

    2. It takes time to learn your company and plan an effective strategy.

    3. Quick hits don’t have staying power.

    4. The biggest media outlets often require the most time and effort.

    5. The investment isn’t a guaranteed ROI.

If you hire anyone to handle PR for you, please  ask these questions:

    • How many will work on your team?
    • What PR are you getting? Traditional media, podcasts, influencers, etc.
    • How do you pitch? Press release distribution, etc.
    • How will we check in and know what’s going on?

Also, learn what to do yourself and/or have a VA do it or you block out 2-3 hours a week to execute what’s in Pitch Publicity Profit.

Behind the Scenes of my California Business Trip

Behind the Scenes of my California Business Trip

I recently visited Southern California to visit three hotel clients of mine.

Most work was done before I left. For example, I already wrote three blog posts before leaving South Florida.

    That work included:

    1. SEO keyword research for each place I was visiting using RankIQ.

    Try it out here:

    2. Write the blog post with hotel client inclusion, but not promotion

You can check out the three blog posts here:

What to Pack for a Trip to Palm Springs:

5 Best Things to Do in Laguna Beach, California:

12 Best Things to Do in La Jolla, California:

    3. Kept in mind everything in the blog post during my trip/making a list

    4. What I didn’t experience, I embedded images from Instagram

    5. Took pictures and video with reels in mind

    6. Uploaded everything to a Google Drive folder to share with the client AND to work from when posting to social media

    7. Updated my team with feedback on conversations with the client and my takeaways as a guest

Creating Content, Finding Contact Information, and Standing out in Emails

Creating Content, Finding Contact Information, and Standing out in Emails

At the end of 2022, I asked the wonderful business owners on my email list to ask me anything about their biggest frustration in learning how to get attention without using ads.

I saw a recurring theme with three people and answer their questions here about:

    • the amount of time it takes to write and repurpose content consistently
    • finding and following up with opportunities to be on other people’s platforms
    • finding the right people to contact in the media
    • how to get messages to stand out so people actually open an email and act upon it
    • how to translate attention into sales

7 Ways to Make Social Media Support PR

7 Ways to Make Social Media Support PR

A Media Mentoring Program client of mine reached out on Facebook and suggested an episode idea, so I moved all the other ones down and bumped this one up for her.

There is such an overlap between social media and PR. They work together, so make them work for you!

    1. Build your brand on social media by sharing your expertise on social media. This way when a journalist does their research on you, they are convinced.
    2. Share your wins on social media. This shows your TRUE expertise.
    3. Do this regularly. Don’t do it once and forget it because then new followers won’t see it and current followers won’t remember.
    4. Connect with the person you’re pitching. This is why it’s important to select a handful of ones that will move the needle for you instead of 500 who cover your niche.
    5. Don’t just connect - like, comment, retweet, etc.
    6. After you pitch them, send them a tweet or message to give them a heads-up.
    7. After you earn coverage, share it on social media REPEATEDLY and tag the journalist who made it happen. I talk about the importance of this in previous episodes with journalists.

To do this seamlessly and automatically, I use Agorapulse.

Try it free for 30 days here: https://www.agorapulse.com/?via=christina86

How to Become a Master Delegator… Even if You’re Afraid to Start

How to Become a Master Delegator… Even if You’re Afraid to Start

It took me about two years to hire my first team member. Then, it took me eight years to hire my first virtual assistant. Eight years! I was afraid AF to delegate things.

I thought it was just me, but this isn’t a rare feeling. Many business owners are afraid to loosen the reins a little bit and let go.

That’s why I invited Kristy Yoder to my podcast. She is the founder and CEO of Smart VAs, a virtual assistant agency. She has a fabulous method on how to decide what you should and should not delegate and why. This exercise is a must for every business owner!

She scaled her agency from one virtual assistant to 70+ talented individuals. She grew her business simply through delegation and now wants to teach others to learn the power of delegation.

Kristy is also the host of The Master Delegator Podcast. She created it for entrepreneurs who want to learn how to become effective in the area of delegation, management, and leadership. She talks about different business growth strategies such as hiring virtual assistants, productivity, online marketing, and many more!

Fun fact: Kristy was born and raised in Manila, Philippines, and moved to the United States in 2019… to my very small hometown of Marion, Ohio!

Eavesdrop on me Going Through a Sales Training

Eavesdrop on me Going Through a Sales Training with Lisa Dadd

We don’t have to be in a state of discomfort to be successful - especially when it comes to sales.

As a seasoned marketing and sales executive, Lisa Dadd is on a mission to show entrepreneurs that the success they’re seeking isn’t outside of their comfort zone as they’ve been led to believe, but rather INSIDE it.

In this podcast, she covers many ways you can close more sales and actually have fun during sales conversations, including:

    ● Why you never have to “be a salesperson”, and who you can be instead

    ● How to identify and utilize your natural approach to sales, as opposed to the “one-size-fits-all” sales methods people are taught.

    ● Why this approach helps people communicate their value more effectively, and more

    authentically.

    ● Keys to communicating our value in ways people understand

    ● How to activate your prospect’s deepest desires to create true urgency

    ● How to leverage objections to connect to what’s truly valuable to your client

With Lisa’s company, Soul Sales™, she shares the tools to remember who we are at our core, and then to be able to communicate our value in ways that others understand.

How tech PR's job changed in 2022

How tech PR's job changed in 2022

Hello and welcome back to Equity, a podcast about the business of startups, where we unpack the numbers and nuance behind the headlines.

This is our Wednesday show, where we niche down to a single person, think about their work and unpack the rest. This week, Natasha interviewed Vijay Chattha, a startup comms leader who has spent over 20 years in the storytelling world. Chattha is the CEO and founder of VSC and founding partner of VSC Ventures, a $21 million investment vehicle to back startups.

    Here's what we spoke about:

    • How his clients are reacting to the downturn in terms of their openness, vulnerability, and general hunger to tell their story
    • The difference between pitching a VC and pitching a journalist (lol)
    • How startup's goal with media coverage can sometimes inherently clash with the media's goal to cover a startup (and why we disagree on the importance of disclosing valuations)
    • The best framework for the different types of media form out there, from Twitter to billboards to earned media.
    • How the #MeToo movement impacted leadership styles and changed accountability for the better
    • If we're getting closer to a more transparent ecosystem, or more opaque one
    • And of course, we end with a lightning round - including but not limited to Chattha's biggest pet peeve with journalists.

Equity drops every Monday at 7 a.m. PT and Wednesday and Friday at 6 a.m. PT, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. TechCrunch also has a great show on crypto, a show that interviews founders, a show that details how our stories come together and more!

Credits: Equity is hosted by TechCrunch's Alex Wilhelm and Mary Ann Azevedo. We are produced by Theresa Loconsolo with editing by Kell. Bryce Durbin is our Illustrator. We'd also like to thank the audience development team and Henry Pickavet, who manages TechCrunch audio products.
