Today we are going to contrast two events that occurred thousands of years ago. In a time when humanity lived and died by the sword. It was their choice. They didn’t want God to be their king. Instead they wanted to live like the surrounding nations and be ruled by a human king. God had warned them that humanity’s way, was not His way. So God who is rich in mercy gave them a king. As kings came and went, nation fought against nation. Yet God continued to pursue them in love. He journeyed with them and sent His prophets to speak His light and life to them. Today we are going on a journey of discovery with God, his prophets Elisha and Elijah, a certain woman and a widow. It was a time of extreme hardship for both a certain woman and the widow. They were of different tribes, lived in different locations and of different times. They had much in common. Both were widowed, living in a time of oppression and inequality, as a result were powerless and vulnerable. They considered their life was at an end. For them they felt all hope was gone.
