    Trading Theology For Therapy

    Trading Theology For Therapy

    Much of American religion, including the Christian Church, is trading theology for therapy.  "This radical transformation of Christian theology and Christian belief replaces the sovereignty of God with the sovereignty of the self. In this therapeutic age, human problems are reduced to pathologies in need of a treatment plan." Spiritual problems are being medicalized, or psychologized if you will, meaning the gospel is set aside, transformation in Christ is ignored, and with their therapist - people have a therapist rather than a home church, or maybe the church is given to therapy - people are "looking inside themselves" to change their lives. But who can change themselves? Why look into a heart that is "deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?" (Jer. 17:9)? We need help from "outside ourselves," which biblical theology gives us in the person of Jesus Christ and the Word of God. A therapeutic approach to problems sounds so attractive. It's Oprah and Dr Phil. It's acceptable on "The View." But it is ultimately a powerless dead end that cannot help those most in need of help. Caregiver Stress - The 3 Questions You Need To Ask Yourself

    Caregiver Stress - The 3 Questions You Need To Ask Yourself

    Three questions to ask yourself when you are experience Caregiver Stress.  When you answer these questions, you can better figure out ways to reduce stress.

    It’s important that we as caregiver avoid burnout.   This is stage two of caregiver overwhelm. Stage one is Caregiver Stress and if you don’t take care of your stress, burnout can sneak up pretty fast.

    Caregiver burnout is a state of emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion caused by the prolonged and overwhelming stress of caregiving (plus everything else on your plate).

    You might be struggling to maintain a sense of purpose in working so hard to provide care, which leads to feelings of loneliness and being unappreciated, second-guessed, or criticized by other family members, friends and your Loved One.

    And you're probably reluctant, unable or unwilling to reach out for help from others.  Isolation and  extreme energy loss are major signs of caregiver burnout.  When you're burned out, it's tough to do anything for you or anyone else.

    1.  What does your stress look like?  When you look at your stress what do you see?

    2. What does stress feel like?     Your feelings, your thoughts, what is your body and mind telling you.

    3.  What does stress do to you?  Meaning how do you act or react.  Or what behaviors do you resort to when stressed?

    Obviously there are better actions than others.  There are better behaviors than others.

    The body’s autonomic nervous system controls your heart rate, breathing, vision changes and more. Its built-in stress response, the “fight-or-flight response,” helps the body face stressful situations.

    It’s so important to think about how you respond to stress physically, emotionally, mentally and through our actions.

    Caregiver Stress is real and it’s going to happen no matter how much you try to stop it.  When you feel stress I want you to think about the word REAL

    R = Recognize
    E = Embrace
    A = Accept
    L = Learn

    Stress is a normal human reaction that happens to everyone. In fact, the human body is designed to experience stress and react to it. When you experience changes or challenges (stressors), your body produces physical and mental responses. That’s stress.

    Stress responses help your body adjust to new situations. Stress can be positive, keeping us alert, motivated and ready to avoid danger. But stress becomes a problem when stressors continue without relief or periods of relaxation.

    Take some time to think through and observe your stress.   Then Grant yourself grace as you recognize and learn ways to overcome it.

    I hope you enjoyed this episode, I seriously want you to reflect on each question.  Grab a journal and really write these out.  It has worked for me over and over again.

    6 Tips to Avoid Burnout

    6 Tips to Avoid Burnout

    Ivy Exec has recently listed these 7 industries as being the top for experiencing burnout:

    • social workers
    • Emergency responders
    • designers
    • business development and sales
    • retail
    • medicine fields
    • law

    Reasonings for the burnout included anything from too much travel, long hours, high stress, emotionally stressful, continuous changes, complex tasks, not feeling like they have "me time" with all the technology.

    Truth is - burnout can happen to anyone - from those in college just starting in the workforce, and stay-at-home moms or dads, to part-time workers and of course those who seem to have it all as executives.

    Some of the hints that the HR Exchange network says are sign's of burnout include:

    • being cynical or critical of your job?
    • irritable or impatient with co-workers or your customers?
    • lacking feeling satisfied about your job and what you are accomplishing?
    • struggle to find energy or excitement even about what your task at hand is?
    • Have your sleep habits changed?

    Gallup reported that 45% of millennials have experienced burnout.

    When I first started in the industry  I developed burnout. About this time I received the news I was the employee of the year and received a trip to Disneyworld. While there I was able to get away from the day-to-day operations and lighten my load as I just had fun. I was so grateful for the trip that as I flew home it had me reflecting on good times in my job, things I enjoyed - and before I knew it I was counting blessing upon blessing of my job and looking forward to getting back as I had some fresh ideas to implement. I was so thankful for this trip because it also taught me at an early age to stick with tough things, not to give up or quit, but rather to take a moment to breathe, regroup, and press forward.

    Perhaps you can relate. You have been doing what you do for so long you are tired, worn out, dry on ideas, lacking energy, or feeling like you don't have much left to offer - or perhaps otherwise known as burnt out.

    Six tips we are going to cover today on how to reignite your passion - whether it be in your job, at home, serving in your community - or truly any aspect of life.

    1. Have a change in scenery
    2. Find an outlet
    3. Reflection
    4. Count your blessings
    5. Grow
    6. Perspective

    Overall, as a recent article from Forbes suggests “The first step in managing burnout is to acknowledge that you’re dealing with it,” said Ferstler. “If not, you can end up in a full-blown mental health crisis.”

    Want more help on goal setting, talking through what some transitions may look like coming up in your life, or just need some more help about reigniting your passion - I'd love to work with you - feel free to check out my website at HollyCurby.com for both life and leadership coaching opportunities as well as business consulting needs. Looking for someone to come in and talk with your team - motivational speaking opportunities are available too.

    Coaching is not a professional mental health or medical care. If you feel burned out to the point that it is interfering with your ability to function, please seek help from a professional counselor or medical professional.

    Remember - it is perfectly normal to hit a slump in life - personally and professionally. The question is - where will you go from here? Just as airline Stewardess encourages us to put the oxygen mask on us first before attemptin
