In this episode of the Being Human is Good For Business Podcast, we learn about leaders who rely on their hearts to guide them.
This group includes Enneagram Types 2, 3 and 4, all of whom tend to have attention seeking motivations, according to Trilogy Effect Partner Mary Beth Sawicki.
She explains, “Known as heart-centered or feeling-centered, these leaders want to be seen the way they want to be seen. In a business context these are the leaders who form strong personal connections and prioritize relationships. Their attention is often focused on human systems over business systems. They see the world through a lens that focuses on the personal.”
The Trilogy Effect team uses the Enneagram framework to help leaders grow through self-awareness and to surface untapped potential in their teams. The Enneagram comprises nine distinct personality Types in groups of three, based on core motivations, specific strengths and liabilities. See our last episode to learn about instinctive center leaders.
On today’s show, Mary Beth is joined by Trilogy Effect Partners Heather Marasse and Wendy Appel. Together, these leadership development experts explore:

Let’s start at the beginning - what is an enneagram? The Enneagram is an ancient personality system that’s been used for centuries to help people understand themselves and those around them. The modern interpretation of this ancient idea is a powerful tool that has been gaining traction in the work world as a means to find success in your career. The Enneagram helps you identify your instinctual behaviors as well as the reasons why you might behave in a certain way. This knowledge can be utilized to create more harmony at work and with those around you.

One name for Enneagram Type 2s, is "The Befriender" . In Part Two of our conversation with Theresa Merrill, the topic of friendships plays a big role. Join us for stories of the early days of friendship between Hope and Theresa!
Tips from our Type 2: It’s okay to say no. The people that truly love you will love you anyway. Figure out what you need.
Major Quote: “It’s not about NOT wanting to vocalize needs. I don’t know what I need”.
How to show love to 2s: Showing love to a 2 might look like letting them know they are seen and love through asking them and letting them answer how they are truly doing and feeling.

In Part 1 of 2, we sit down with Theresa Merrill, long-time friend of Hope and the person responsible for our introduction to the Enneagram!! Theresa identifies as an Enneagram Type 2, and we explore the facets of this type that Beth McCord names "The Supportive Advisor". Check back next week for this episode's major quote and ways to better love our Type 2s.
Part One Tips for Type 2s:
Type 2s often report not knowing what they need for themselves. One place to start exploring this is with self care. Self care for a 2 very often might look like just saying no. Consider trying this out with cold calls from marketers. Don’t explain why you say no, just say no.
