    What we’re Enjoying

Shua finally started listening to a book that’s been in his queue for a while; Hidden Figures by Margot Lee Shetterly. It’s a pretty inspirational story of women overcoming a lot of prejudice and hardship to help with a major scientific event in American history. Jay got the opportunity to see a classic Bruce Lee movie at his local theater. Enter the Dragon was a significant film in the actor’s short, tragic career. And it was a fun one to watch too!

    Enjoy Movies!

Bruce Willis rocketed to stardom after starring in Die Hard during the summer of 1988. Directed by John McTiernan, this successful story got the everyman-action-hero genre going too. And it was the first film for the legendary icon Alan Rickman. That’s right. His very first movie!

It had a ton of other great actors too, like Bonnie Bedelia, Reginald VelJohnson, William Atherton and more. The sequels were popular and have fans opinions mixed on what the better ones are, but everyone can agree the original is incredible. Join us as we look back on what we liked and the influence the movie had on Hollywood.

Did you Die Hard? What’s your favorite line? First person that emails me with the subject line, “Yippee Ki Yay” will get a special mention on the show.  Let us know. Come talk to us in the Discord channel or send us an email to EnjoyStuff@RetroZap.com

    Enter the Dragon (1973)

    Enter the Dragon (1973)

Fifty years ago this month, most of the world was first introduced to a true legend of both cinema and martial arts with the release of this action thriller.  Of course that legend was the late, great Bruce Lee who tragically passed away just about a month before this movie was to hit theaters.  Needless to say, he left his mark playing Lee a Hong Kong spy/martial arts master who is tasked with infiltrating a mysterious island tournament being run by the nefarious Han played by Kien Shih.  Lee also has help from two American martial artists who have joined this tournament played by John Saxon and Jim Kelly.  Once on the island, they fight, they feast, and they.....interact with various elements (?) and what results is a rip-roaring kung fu classic.  Directed by Robert Clouse, it's time to ENTER...THE....DRAGON!

'Enter the Dragon' (featuring Robert Dean)

'Enter the Dragon' (featuring Robert Dean)

Nowadays, martial arts feel like a distinct part of the fabric of Hollywood action movies. But that wasn't always the case. In fact, if not for Bruce Lee and his iconic 1973 hit Enter the Dragon, the state of the entertainment industry might look a whole lot different.

Robert Dean joins the show to take a look at how Enter the Dragon has held up since its release. We'll discuss how influential the movie has proven to be, how it captures Lee's own personal philosophy, and whether it would have kicked off a movie series if Lee had lived longer.

So grab some nunchucks and brace yourselves for the virtuosity of Bruce Lee in his most famous role, the unforgettable Enter the Dragon.

    SYNOPSIS

Lee (Bruce Lee) is a martial artist determined to capture the criminal whose gang caused his sister's death. Lee enters a kung fu competition, attempting to fight his way to the dealer's headquarters with the help of some friends.

    Episode 453: Enter The Dragon

    Episode 453: Enter The Dragon

B-Movie Cast episode 453 is here! This is a special show paying tribute to the late John Saxon. A ubiquitous figure in film and television, John passed away recently at the age of 83. We wanted to check out one of his most iconic films in his honor: “Enter the Dragon”. Mary and Nic are lucky enough to be joined by actor, filmmaker, and writer Michael Worth. Michael worked with John on many projects and was his friend. He also took the time to sit down with John and record him as he recounted some of his memories of his long career. Michael is sharing a small segment of those recordings with us in this episode as John talks about going to Hong Kong to film our movie this episode “Enter the Dragon”.

“Enter the Dragon” wasn’t just any old martial arts film. It was the first real collaboration between the film industries of Hollywood and Hong Kong on a martial arts film. A joint production staring martial arts master Bruce Lee, middleweight Karate champion Jim Kelly and of course John Saxon who also had a black belt in Karate and was also accomplished at Judo.

“Enter the Dragon” would open the door for a new generation of martial arts films, showing the genre to be commercially viable in the American and European markets and setting the bar by which all future martial arts films would be judged.

So, grab some popcorn, crack open a cold beverage and get ready to check out the film where Bruce Lee asks the question “why doesn’t somebody just shoot this guy?”

199 - Bruce Lee: Life and Death of the Dragon

199 - Bruce Lee: Life and Death of the Dragon

Today we dig into the life of a true citizen of the world, Lee Jun-fan; known professionally as Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee was a martial arts pioneer, known to some as the "father of MMA" and as the founder of Jeet Kune Do. He as also a Hong Kong and American actor who made some of the most profitable films of all time.

One of the biggest pop culture icons of the 20th century, Bruce is often credited with helping change the way Asians were presented in American films. He had to bust his ass to make a name for himself in the US film market, and then right as his star began to rise to unprecedented heights for a Chinese man in America, he died unexpectantly at the age of 32. And then, years later, his only son Brandon followed in his father's footsteps, becoming an action star and then also suddenly and tragically dying just as his own star began to rise, at the even younger age of 28.

Two remarkable lives lost in their primes. Sad endings, for sure, but the lives they lead, especially Bruce's, were incredibly inspirational. So dive in and be inspired in this kung fu, kick-ass edition, of Timesuck.
