    The Place Beyond the Pines

    The Place Beyond the Pines
Looking for your weekly dose of generational trauma, misdirective cinema, and grease stained Ben Mendelsohn? Luckily, The Place Beyond the Pines, 2013's crime-drama-tragedy-mini-epic, is here to save the day! Before we make our way down its dark and winding road, come with us as we make a quick pit-stop and chow down on a Blue Plate Special that leaps from a discussion of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and its theatrical re-release in honor of the classic film's 40th anniversary to an ambivalent consideration of Three Thousand Years of Longing, the latest film from Mad Max maestro George Miller. In due course, all roads lead to Schenectady and its eclectic cast of angels and demons, prompting a wide-ranging deliberation including but not limited to the weighty yet delicate brilliance of director Derek Cianfrance, the distorted magic that inevitably sparks from pitting early 2010 stars Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper up against one another, the at once simple and tortuous structural framework at play, and a special observance for one particular line reading from Emory Cohen. Midweek Mention... Ghost Rider

    Midweek Mention... Ghost Rider

Mark Steven Johnson's GHOST RIDER (2007) sees daredevil stuntman - see what I did there because the same director also did the Ben Affleck superhero caper about a blind gimp lawyer called DAREDEVIL - Johnny Blaze make a Faustian pact with Mephistopheles which ends up in him becoming a flame-skulled bounty hunter. You know how those Faustian pacts can be. With steampunk Neo-clone villain Blackheart and his band of easily dispatched elemental douchebro's desperately seeking the maguffin which will ultimately undo him, it's the Nic Cage inspired adlibs and character details that elevate this B-movie with an A budget to something approaching watchability. Eva Mendes is window dressing, the writing is appalling, the central romantic relationship makes no sense, it frequently resembles a badly rendered PlayStation 3 game when the title character is on screen, Peter Fonda looks bored, the stakes are low or non-existent, there are plot holes galore and it commits one of the ultimate cinematic sins in that it’s embarrassed by its premise. Yes, you would have to be a moron to enjoy this which coincidentally explains why we all did to some degree or another.

We love to hear from our listeners! By which I mean we tolerate it. If it hasn't been completely destroyed yet you can usually find us on twitter @dads_film, on Facebook Bad Dads Film Review, on email at baddadsjsy@gmail.com or on our website baddadsfilm.com.

#25: "The Place Beyond The Pines" (2012), Bon Iver, Heath Ledger & 10 Years Gone By

#25: "The Place Beyond The Pines" (2012), Bon Iver, Heath Ledger & 10 Years Gone By

In this episode, I revisit one of my favorite indie darlings, "The Place Beyond The Pines" (2012), which lead me on a journey of finding crazy connections between this movie, my favorite artist (Justin Vernon/Bon Iver) and one of my favorite beloved actors, Heath Ledger.

The film directed by Derek Cianfrance, starring Ryan Gosling & Eva Mendes, came out 10 years ago this year! Since then, the lead couple became a couple in real life and had children of their own, a documentary about Heath Ledger came out ("I Am Heath Ledger" released in 2017) and Justin Vernon celebrated the 10 year anniversary of his Grammy winning album, self-titled Bon Iver. So this episode is basically dedicated to celebrating those things.

    Training Day (2001)

    Training Day (2001)

Happy 20th Anniversary to the seminal crime drama which finally won Denzel Washington the Oscar for Best Actor!

It all takes place during one day as alluded to in the title as veteran LA detective Alonzo Harris (Washington) takes relative newbie Jake (Hawke) on his first ride-along throughout the city to teach him about the narcotics trade along with a LOT of stuff he wasn’t expecting.

This movie has pretty much become this generation’s Scarface…but is that a good thing?

It was directed by Antoine Fuqua and co-stars Scott Glenn, Cliff Curtis, Eva Mendes, and Ethan Hawke who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor that same year.

    Who Would Watch 'Ghost Rider'?

Nic Cage is back, the last film of Nic Cage month is Ghost Rider. In this 2007 Marvel Movie, Nic Cage plays Johnny Blaze, a dare devil who is controlled by the Devil, who must defeat the Devil's Son (Wes Bentley) to lift the curse...all while trying to get the girl  (Eva Mendes).
