Episode 99: Stranger in the Manger - Was Jesus Creator or Created? James Walker at an ExJW conference [Part 2]

On part two president of Watchman Fellowship, James Walker, concludes his keynote on the nature of God and the Trinity presented at the Witness Now for Jesus Ex-Jehovah's Witness conference. We examine the history behind some of the classic heretical teachings that confronted the early Christianity, how they reappear in our time and how you can recognize them. We hope these insights will give you practical and edifying truths as you give a defense for the hope that is in you to friends, family, and loved ones who don't know Jesus.

As we learned last week, the doctrine of God as Three-in-One, the Trinity, is absolutely central to our faith. Any deviation from understanding this teaching inevitably results in false doctrines and heresy.

Historical councils of the Church throughout history have rigorously addressed the aberrant views of the Trinity, such as the Council of Nicea (325 A.D.) and the Council of Chalcedon (451 A.D.). Yet despite these efforts, heretical doctrines regarding the nature of God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit resurface in non-Christian religions and cults.

How might you address objections to God as Three-in-One? Are you prepared to give a defense of the Trinity? What would you say to a Mormon who might object that the word "Trinity" is not found in the Bible, or a Muslim who says it is blasphemy to refer to God as three distinct Persons?

What might you say to someone who argues Jesus is not God? Or that only the Father is God? How might you answer someone who would claim God is not really three Persons, but just appears to us in three different modes?

James Walker is a former fourth-generation Mormon who is currently president of Watchman Fellowship, an evangelical apologetics ministry focused on interfaith evangelism. He is author of The Concise Guide to Today's Religions and Spirituality (watchman.org/ConciseGuide), What the Qur'an Really Teaches about Jesus (watchman.org/Quran), and coauthor of The Truth Behind The Secret (bit.ly/TruthSecret). He is the cofounder of the Atheist & Christian Book Club (AtheistChristianBookClub.com) and cohosts Mormons in Transition Meetup in north Texas (ExMoDFW.com).

Episode 98: Stranger in the Manger - Was Jesus Creator or Created? James Walker at an ExJW conference [Part 1]

Episode 98: Stranger in the Manger - Was Jesus Creator or Created? James Walker at an ExJW conference [Part 1]

Was Jesus the creator of all things or was He actually a created being? Creator or creature? God with us or the angel Michael with us? These are foundational questions for Jehovah's Witnesses and other controversial religions. This two-part episode of Apologetics Profile features Watchman Fellowship president, James Walker, sharing a keynote message given at the Witness Now for Jesus Conference of former Jehovah's Witnesses. This message provides helpful reminders and insights about the uniqueness and wonder of seeing God as One God and as three distinct Persons. The doctrine of the Trinity can be difficult to wrap our minds around, but it is absolutely foundational for our faith.

No matter where you are in your walk with Christ, we hope this presentation will be helpful and edifying to you this Christmas season as you reach out to those who don't know Christ. So come and see! Come and celebrate the incarnate Immanuel, God with us, the Babe lying in a manger wrapped in swaddling clothes who is also Creator and Lord of the heavens and earth.

Interview: Dave Wicklin Love Bombed by Jehovah’s Witnesses

Interview: Dave Wicklin Love Bombed by Jehovah’s Witnesses

There are many people that come into contact with Jehovah's Witnesses at the lowest point in their lives. David is no different. During the time he lost his mother, they were right there selling paradise. He learned all about the resurrection hope, welcoming dead loved ones, living on paradise earth, and all the fun he'd have playing with the tigers, lions, and bears and enjoying the prospects of living forever. The only catch? He had to join their religion.

He was quickly love-bombed by the Witnesses at his mother's funeral and David fell for their fake love - hook-line-and-sinker like so many unsuspecting individuals.

At the time David came into contact with the Witnesses, he was still young and impressionable. He was still trying to figure things out, not really sure about what he wanted to do with his life. He was taking classes at the community college and working at the local convenient store.

However,  after getting further involved with the group, he was discouraged from pursuing higher education. He quickly got with their program and began following their rules. He had no idea that this religion was not just same mainstream organization that attended meetings on Sunday. Nope, it was much more than that.

for the next 20+ years, David found himself on a mental marry-go-ground jumping through all of the Watchtower's hoops.

    Jehovah's Witnesses and Child Baptism

    Jehovah's Witnesses and Child Baptism
Before being baptized as a Jehovah's Witness I was baptized as an infant in the Anglican church. My father was an Anglican Church member before he became a Jehovah's Witness. I eventually accompanied him to the meetings and took to the faith. The pressure from the elders in the congregation and amongst teens is immense and I eventually got baptized at 13 years of age.

What is very ironic is that Watchtower criticizes Christendom and the churches for infant baptism. Despite such criticism, and recognizing that baptism requires informed consent, Watchtower highlights it allows the baptism of children as young as 6.

Announcement! How Cults Work Course coming soon!

Announcement! How Cults Work Course coming soon!
ver the course of a number of years of my cult activism I have appeared in the mainstream media speaking about my journey as a Jehovah’s Witness and I have been asked to give my views and to unpack the dynamics around cults locally here in South Africa and abroad. I’ve written extensive articles about the phenomenon and have commented on the cult landscape not only from a religious perspective, but also from a commercial, self-help and political overview.

And during the course of all of this I have also been contacted by parents and concerned individuals wanting to know more about a certain group or how to protect their children, family members and friends from getting drawn into cults or high control groups. I remember working with the Concerned Parents Group here in Durban whose children were being recruited at high school and eventually lured to Mauritius and told to cut ties with their family members. It was a heartbreaking saga as it reminded me of how many other groups like the Jehovah’s Witnesses practice shunning and what a devastating effect it has.

Recently, I have been contacted by concerned individuals who once again wanted to know how to protect their family members and how to get individuals who are stuck in a cult out.

With that I realized that I needed to put an educational programme together to educate people on the basics of cults and their recruitment techniques. The past year and a half have been tough on many of us. We’ve lost family members, friends and many other loved ones to this pandemic. Many of us are suffering the after effects of the virus and its impact on our health and our psyche. The economic impact has also been a major factor that has caused major mental health issues with many of us.

And this is a climate ripe for cult recruitment as people want to make sense of what is happening in their lives and looking for a way out. Cults thrive in this type of environment. Not only the religious type, but the political type as well.

So subscribe to this channel to be updated on when this will be released and how to access the course.

The Watchtower's Distorted View of Homosexuality

The Watchtower's Distorted View of Homosexuality
In publications directed to the public, Watchtower claims not to judge homosexuals, yet continues to release articles that are disparaging of gay people and anyone supporting gay people.

Watchtower labels homosexuality as one of the most vile sins, and practicing homosexuals will be destroyed at Armageddon. It has written that masturbation can lead to becoming homosexual, and homosexuality is a desire that can be overcome. Clever use of images convey a message not always put into writing.

How The Jehovah's Witness Corporation Solicits Money

How The Jehovah's Witness Corporation Solicits Money
As a publishing company, Watchtower amassed considerable wealth from the sale of literature from the 1800's to the 1990s. There was no need to resort to the same collection efforts typical of other religious groups. This changed in 1990 with a tax ruling against Jimmy Swaggart. In 1988, Jimmy Swaggart was taken to court in the case Swaggart Ministries v. California Board of Equalization. This was with regard to paying tax on profit derived from sales of religious material.

Realizing a ruling against Swaggart could result in the sale of Watchtower publications being taxed, Watchtower filed as friend of the court to show support for Jimmy Swaggart Ministries retaining tax exempt status. The Supreme Court ruled against Swaggart on January 17th, 1990, ordering him to pay back taxes.

Well, the sale of Watchtower publications fell under this ruling. Watchtower decided that rather than pay tax on the money it was receiving from the sale of Watchtower literature, it would be better to direct Jehovah's Witnesses to start asking for donations from people who accepted Watchtower journals in the house to house ministry work. This led to a decline in income.

This video shows how the Governing Body solicits money from the Jehovah's Witnesses, including from the poor and children.
