The Ray Bradbury 1953 Classic Novel Vs. the 2018 HBO Adaptation

The Margos turn up the heat (get it?) with a look at the 1953 literary classic Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury--a banned book for decades. Inspired by the Cold War and the House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) investigating actors, artists, and writers claiming communism, Bradbury’s work has been controversial since its publication over its depiction of an America that embraces book burning and a total lack of individualism.

The story centers around a “fireman,” Guy Montag, an American in the not-so-distant future whose job is to burn all deemed objectionable books. He seems to live an ordinary life, not questioning his line of work along with his wife Mildred, who is endlessly watching TV screens (“parlor walls”) that contain her “real family.” One day, he meets teenage neighbor Clarisse, who lives a life built on free thinking, which is odd to Guy.

When Clarisse goes missing, and Guy’s wife believes he is behaving suspiciously (when she is not overdosing), we learn he has a big secret. He has been storing away contraband books and starting to read what has before been banned.

The 2018 adaptation is written and directed by Ramin Bahrani and will be the movie we compare to the original material in this episode.

#16 Cinema e fantascienza distopica - Con Mauro Gervasini

22 | Part Two: Movies to darken your holiday season

To recap: The dictionary says there are two types of dystopian society, i.e. one in which there is great suffering or injustice:

    1) Totalitarian - With a system of government that is centralized and dictatorial and requires complete subservience to the state.

    2) Apocalyptic - In which an event involving destruction or damage on an awesome or catastrophic scale has taken place.

If you thought last week’s episode was bleak, brace yourself for something truly, downright awful this week.

And thus draws to a shuddering close, the somewhat chaotic year 2022. Looking out on the new year to come, to quote John & Yoko: “Let’s hope it’s a good one, without any fear.”

21 | Part One: Movies to darken your holiday season

The dictionary says there are two types of dystopian society, i.e. one in which there is great suffering or injustice:

    1) Totalitarian - With a system of government that is centralized and dictatorial and requires complete subservience to the state.

    2) Apocalyptic - In which an event involving destruction or damage on an awesome or catastrophic scale has taken place.

The jury’s out on which we’d prefer to live in, but suffice it to say that both types enflame the imaginations of film-makers on a regular basis. And so, in this penultimate episode of 2022, we crack open a tall, frosty can of utter despair, abject misery, and really bad vibes as we haul ass up the mighty River Dystopia without so much as a used Canadian Tire paddle and what remains of our wits to guide us. (Sorry, got carried away there.)

BONUS: Dave reaches out to results-driven folks everywhere by sharing his suggestion for a New Year's resolution going forward. Don't push back, double down, or hop on a call until you've tried it.

All that gifting aside, we wish our listeners none of the above, but rather oodles of peace, love, health, and harmony this holiday season. Part Two'll be a-waitin' on the other side…

    10 - Fahrenheit 451 #3 w/ Nova

We're finishing Fahrenheit 451 and discussing the movie today! Honestly, they changed a lot for the movie, but it felt like it modernized it a bit. Plus, it added some actual character development that was truly lacking in the book itself. Up next, we will be reading Little Women, so be sure to read that before next week!

    #9 - The Dystopia Classic

Dystopian fiction has become a popular subgenre of sci-fi in its own right, but the earliest dystopian novels shared some unique elements in common, inverting the standard tropes of the hero's journey. In this episode, we explore what has made these stories so enduring.

Book recommendation: Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell.
My essay on the inverted hero's journey.

Can Religion Sometimes Be a Hazard?: Interview with Phil Gurski

    Phil Gurski

This episode focuses on religion and ideology. Often we're taught to avoid two topics: religion and politics. However, can we discuss religion and ideology, at the right time and place, with civility and respect? In this episode, terrorism specialist Phil Gurski discusses this sensitive topic of religion with tact and diplomacy.

As Phil Gurski says, most people, religious or not, are kind and helpful. A very small percentage go down the "dark path" to inflict heavenly "wrath" on unbelievers, to the point of engaging in terrorism.

Religion often has moderates and sometimes extremists. Conservative and liberals. People who view their sacred writings metaphorically or literally. Groups and individuals who try to spread their religion as much as possible, others who don't. We live in a world of multiple religions and beliefs. Somehow, some way, we have to get along . . .

Join us at Multi-Hazards as we explore religion, how it affects society, and how we all can work together.
