Ep 74 - Get Your 'Blood's Worth': The Great Fire of London

Travel back to 1666 London with us! Houses are made of wood and dangerously close together. The summer was intensely dry, and a gale-force wind was coming in from the East. It's the night of September 2, and a baker on Pudding Lane forgot to put out his oven.

The bell was rung, but a series of non-decisions by politicians and the rush to evacuate let the fire burn down 5/6th of the city.

We're getting started with fire disasters - join us!

The Greatest Ship Never Known : USS Shadwell

The Greatest Ship Never Known : USS Shadwell
During the battle, Shadwell was struck by a torpedo on the starboard side, tearing a hole in the ship's bottom 60-feet wide. The crew of 500 frantically worked to save the ship, but Shadwell was flooding, and sinking. Shadwell's crew worked through the night to save their sinking ship. By morning they were under their own power, and no longer taking on water. No lives lost. Three injured. Their efforts were rewarded. A Ship of Two Histories Nearly 70 years later, Shadwell no longer patrols the waters of the Pacific; the ship is moored to a small island in the waters of Mobile Bay, near the historic Civil War naval battle site. Instead of being mothballed, sunk in target practice, or being converted to a museum ship, Shadwell is in the business of saving lives.

We also talk to State Representative Dacia Grayber about how she used her cat in an unusual way and it helped out big time.

We also tell you all the headlines from this past week and give you dinner suggestions. All in a day's work.

Season Four - Episode Four - Yvonne Raymer and Morgan Hackl

Season Four - Episode Four - Yvonne Raymer and Morgan Hackl

When I think of a fire department, I think of red fire trucks with ladders reaching towards the sky and fire fighters who are willing to sacrifice themselves to save the lives of others.

All that is true with the Saskatoon Fire Department, but there is another side to this department that is making a difference in our community through empathy, dignity and respect.

This episode looks at the work of the Saskatoon Fire Department's Community Risk Reduction Team. This group is lead by Assistant Chief Yvonne Raymer and supported by Chief Morgan Hackl. They are the featured guests in this episode and do an outstanding job of articulating how important this team's work is in Saskatoon.

The Community Risk Reduction Team focuses on issues such as homelessness, addictions and mental health challenges. It engages our most vulnerable population through meaningful conversations and then works with other community groups such as CUMFI to ensure people who need help finding safe housing or mental health supports do not fall through the cracks.

I learned so much from Yvonne and Morgan during our conversation and have a greater appreciation for the work being done by the Saskatoon Fire Department in our community. I hope you feel the same after listening to this episode.

Thank you so much to Yvonne and Morgan for taking the time to speak with me on the podcast and for the work they are doing in our community.

Thank you again for listening and supporting a local, independent podcast. I hope you have a safe and wonderful holiday season and we'll talk with you again in 2022!

    Cheers...Eric

Brenden Parsey - How to Coach 850 Firefighters!

It’s detailed, heavy on the technical talk, but fascinating from the perspective of understanding what goes on behind the scenes with a very important department of airport and airline safety.  If you’re a training nerd, you’re gonna love this Episode.

Brenden and I discuss managing Physical Performance across a diverse range of training abilities, ages, and injury limitations.  He goes into great detail around the construction of this massive program, facility design, program design, program implementation and other details.

I love Brenden's passion for his role and Strength and Conditioning in general, and it's clear that he gives a lot of attention to detail.

Responding to Emergencies, On and Off the Ice, with Local Hero Jay Stevens 011

It was our pleasure to host Jay Stevens on the show this week! Jay is a fire fighter and is an emergency goalie for the Utah Grizzlies. On December 10, 2016, Jay was called upon to enter the game, where he literally saved the day.  We discussed that day, his amazing desire to help people throughout his career, and which aspects of fitness have helped him stay in great shape. He were happy to also give the listener a lesson on "chirping". We were grateful for Jay and his service and wisdom!
