Earth Day with Arizona State Parks Rangers!

Earth Day with Arizona State Parks Rangers!

This episode is in celebration of Earth Day! Earth Day is an annual, global event on April 22 that has been going strong for 53 years after it was first created in 1970 to draw attention to environmental protection.

To discuss Earth Day and better understand how we can all do our part to protect Arizona's natural resources and beautiful outdoor spaces, we’ve invited four state park rangers from across Arizona to join us on the show: Ranger Ethan from Oracle State Park, Rangers Kyle and Jess from Kartchner Caverns State Park, and Ranger Sara from Lost Dutchman State Park.

We mention some resources on the show, so be sure to check out our fire safety and restrictions online resource, as mentioned by Ranger Sara; the International Dark Sky Association website and our episode with IDA ambassador Mike Weasner, as referenced by Ranger Ethan; and cave tour reservations as recommended by Rangers Jess and Kyle.

After listening, we hope you’re excited to take action with these simple steps towards becoming a more engaged environmentalist…and even join us for a fun Earth Day celebration at one of Arizona’s state parks, listed below (click on each link for event dates, times, and other details).

Rebranding Safety - Diary Episode 3

Rebranding Safety - Diary Episode 3
A little update on what work we've been doing over the last few months. Risk Fluent have been doing a lot of transformational work with Safety Teams recently so I touch on that, my thoughts on the LinkedIn space right now, changes to the fire regulations and how that seems to be affecting demand, the challenges with Professional Indemnity insurance within the fire industry, influencer marketing and what safety work we should actually be doing. Enjoy.

Rebranding Safety with Tom Geraghty - Psychological Safety in practise

Rebranding Safety with Tom Geraghty - Psychological Safety in practise
Tom Geraghty is back with us this week hosting his second episode, continuing with our series on psychological safety. We discuss what we think psychological safety looks like in reality, taking the the academia and seeing how it translates within our businesses and our lives. We talk about the importance of motivation and clarity, the power and privilege surrounding it, human error, the knock on effects of banter, and tonnes more. Thanks so much again to Tom for another amazing and insightful conversation. Enjoy.

Rebranding Safety with Steve Harris - Bringing risk management practises into the world of safety

Rebranding Safety with Steve Harris - Bringing risk management practises into the world of safety
Thank you so much to Steve for joining us on the pod this week after we reflected on the article he’d written for Sentinel on another episode a few weeks back. His article "Organisational Risk: Predicting the unpredictable" for IIRSM’s Sentinel Magazine was really refreshing to me. And now he’s here with us in the flesh! Steve has an extensive background in economics, security, nuclear, risk, the list goes on, he’s a very well-respected professional in our industry. We discuss the safety profession in general and it’s perception, mature risk management, zero harm, the sharing of information, big corporations vs SMEs, the nature of trade associations, and loads more. Thanks again Steve. Absolutely cracking chat. Enjoy.

We also discuss the importance of having a management process in place to make sure building owners/managers know exactly what’s required so that everything is kept up to date. There are some resources listed below. These sites really are the best for breaking down this stuff so please do use those and get in touch if you need help. Enjoy…

Rebranding Safety with Peter Jenkins - CoHost for Q4! Episode 1

Rebranding Safety with Peter Jenkins - CoHost for Q4! Episode 1
So excited to bring you the first of three amazing episodes with our new quarterly cohost - Peter Jenkins, Group H&S Manager at Dalziel. Peter introduces the running theme perfectly in this episode, but ultimately we're taking a massive dive into the concept of BRAND - your personal brand, the brand of your programmes or projects, and the brand of the safety profession. In this episode on personal brand, we ask the big questions like; who are you? Who am I to you? Why it's important, and so much more. Thanks, Peter, for being our cohost. Enjoy.

Rebranding Safety REACTS - Episode 4 - News story reactions

Rebranding Safety REACTS - Episode 4 - News story reactions
James gives his thoughts on two recent news stories: "1 in 4 unsafe London buildings have non-cladding related fire safety issues" and "Starbucks to Close Stores over Safety Concerns". This chat touches on many things including; safety being a branding game, the absence of accidents and the presence of safety, and is stay-put safe? Naturally, this turns into a bit of a rant..... Side note - definitely meant 1099 and not 199 ;)

A New Fire Chief in Town

A New Fire Chief in Town

The Elyria Fire Department has a new Chief: Joe Pronesti. Pronesti has been with the Elyria Fire Department for 33 years but grew up in the city of Elyria and in the department. His dad was a fireman in the 1950s. "Growing up, all my heroes were Elyria Firefighters," said Pronesti.  "They are all passed now but I keep pictures of them, and think of them, and I also think of the bosses I had when I first came on the job that mentored me.  It's the only job I've ever wanted, and it's the only city I ever wanted to work in." Pronesti said. " I'm living my dream."
    Congratulations, Chief Pronesti!

It's a great day to be a Pioneer! Thanks for listening. Find Elyria Schools on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube!

WIFIRE- helps firefighters get a jump on wildfires - Science Nation Short

WIFIRE- helps firefighters get a jump on wildfires - Science Nation Short
In recent years, the number and scale of wildfires in the U.S. has risen, threatening cities and forests, and forcing large-scale evacuations. The National Science Foundation (NSF) is supporting the WIFIRE initiative, led jointly by the University of California (UC), San Diego, and the University of Maryland, to better monitor, predict and mitigate wildfires in the future. WIFIRE merges observations, such as satellite imagery and real-time data from sensors in the field, with computational techniques like signal processing, visualization, modeling and data assimilation, to monitor environmental conditions and predict where and how fast a wildfire will spread. The project is part of the NSF Hazards SEES program, which enhances sustainability through the use of advanced technologies and new methods. Participants in WIFIRE include researchers from the San Diego Supercomputer Center (SDSC), the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology's (Calit2) Qualcomm Institute, and the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) department at UC San Diego's Jacobs School of Engineering. Also participating in the project is the University of Maryland's Department of Fire Protection Engineering. The research in this episode was supported by NSF award #1331615, Hazards SEES Type 2: WIFIRE: A Scalable Data-Driven Monitoring, Dynamic Prediction and Resilience Cyberinfrastructure for Wildfires. 2012 Pole Creek Fire

    2012 Pole Creek Fire

Created by: Mari Feher, Hosted by:  Ania Wiktorowicz

A fire erupted on  Sept. 8, 2012, and burned about 26,000 acres, or about 40 square miles at the Pole Creek trailhead.  The fire that was caused by lightning cost about $18 million to fight. The surging blaze destroyed four cars at the trailhead in the Three Sisters Wilderness, endangering 30 hikers and campers who had to be rescued out of the forest.

One of those climbers was our very own Ania, who just completed a climb to the top on North Sister, a rugged, dangerous mountain on its own. Come, listen to the harrowing story of how Ania and her team run out the fire while trees burst into flames along the way. How did they make it out? By being prepared and by using their rational navigational system.

**WARNING: YOU MUST BE 18 YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER TO ENJOY THIS CONTENT**

After going to a fire demo, Brian and I were inspired to take it up a notch in our personal play.  Please note, this is not us doing a fire scene.  We're simply beginning the process of learning how to play with fire.  While it was fun, we recognize that we still have to do more research beyond a lot of googling and one actual class.  Stay safe and keep it kinky!

Maintaining Design Integrity, Fire Safety with Performance-Based Egress Solutions

Maintaining Design Integrity, Fire Safety with Performance-Based Egress Solutions

Egress challenges and fire safety codes are common issues that can have a big impact on architectural project design and success, whether new construction or renovation. The existing components of a building used for one purpose might simply not be up to code for another.

Telgian Engineering & Consulting's April Musser, PE, CFPS, and BWBR's Roger "Lars" Larson, AIA, discuss why egress and fire codes are so vital to a building's safety, as well as solutions that performance-based code approaches can offer to make designs more flexible and valuable. In the end, a successful performance-based egress solution will strike a balance between safety and fidelity within an architectural design.
