Should First Responders Get Third-Party Mental Health Help?

In this episode I speak with two prior Florida police officers and a former Navy SEAL. The Florida cops are Logan and Cathi Long. Logan was involved in a shooting and went through a slew of mental health issues that he felt his department failed him on. Together, his wife Cathi and him helped become a part of Mental Health For Heroes. You will hear them talk about their journey along with the assistance of Navy SEAL Kory Knowles.

They provide 3rd party mental health care for first responders. We discuss the importance of mental health, why it should be a priority to have a 3rd party option outside your agency, and much more in the realm of PTSD/Mental health care. She is a great person and a wonderful conversationalist, but don't take my word for it. Check it out and enjoy.

Chelsea is the owner of Waimea Yoga and is a huge support to the veteran and first responder community. She was previously on the podcast on Episode 9 and 9.5. That episode was on iRest meditation. She graciously reached out to me to try out a new piece of equipment she is using to help veterans and first responders. It is called the Vasper. I hope you enjoy the quick episode on how to try it and support those looking to get an opportunity to use it.

I have been getting organized to head off island for a bit and this was a blessing. I was a bit stretched thin and was neglecting my normal workout routine and then walked in Vasper. It was so nice, it was easy but about 30 mins I felt like I did a solid workout. My favorite part after the exercise was sitting on the cooling table and doing a quick 10 minute session of iRest. After that I was ready for my day and everything it brought my way. This opportunity really helped remind me, for the millionth time, how valuable exercise is each day. It seems like almost everyone who jumps on here to share their story is doing the same. I hope you found something useful in this episode.

"It's simple, but it's not easy". Can apply to almost all normal problems in our life. Simple to know what to do but when emotions, egos and stubbornness get involved, it's no longer easy.

Matt and I served at the same time but only crossed paths briefly. It was awesome reconnecting with him and I was so honored he wanted to share his story. Matt started his life down in Texas. Grew up playing football, as he put it, trading his body for an education. He eventually changed course in life and that led him to joining EOD in the United States Air Force.

Listening to Matt’s story; I’m hearing the story of someone who wasn’t afraid of adversity or a challenge. After getting to know him better he’s a typical person you would look up to. Seeing confident leaders like Matt stepping out to acknowledge even he has struggled with mental health issues has me hopeful that the culture in our community is trending in a positive direction. This episode was so enjoyable for me. It reminds me of a phrase, “similar but different”. I can relate so much to Matt’s struggles and process but his perspective was a new one for me. It left me reevaluating myself in that new lens.

23_Voi Inc with CEO Rick Johnson (Veteran)

    Mission Statement:

Voi’s mission is to deliver the most comprehensive, innovative solutions to help hospitals and health systems, government agencies, educational institutions, families, and communities detect, intervene, support, and care for people at risk for suicide and living with behavioral health issues.

Rick identifies and connects with organizations working to provide mental health care services to patients, employees, veterans, and service members. As a U.S. Marine Corps leader for 30 years, Rick has seen first-hand the devastating impact untreated mental health issues has on individuals and their loved ones. He is confident that, with sufficient focus, detection and effective treatment of mental health issues can be dramatically improved.

Previously, Rick served as a Vermont Assistant Attorney General, taught strategy and planning at the U.S. Naval War College, worked as the Associate Director of The Dartmouth Institute (a health policy think-tank), and created and helped lead Dartmouth-Hitchcock Health system’s innovation center.

It is never easy to talk about suicide or death. It is what inspired me to try and do something that may positively impact our community to bring attention to the importance of mental health. Rick’s history of performing root cause analyses of the suicides of his marines and sailors is a perspective that is very unique and is one heck of a burden to bare. That perspective has to be so insightful for Voi and other companies that he is working with. I really appreciated the opportunity to have him join and share that insight with us.

20_Transcendental Meditations (TM) with Peter Trivelas (Veteran); an instructor with the David Lynch Foundation

Peter was in the Navy on an aircraft carrier for Vietnam. The intense deployment cycle led him to self-medicating, like most of us have found ourselves doing. Eventually he found himself in San Francisco’s Art Institute studying film- that is where he accidentally stumbled across Transcendental Meditation (TM). The group of individuals he became friends with each had a mellowness to them, a sense of calm. The commonality was TM. He dedicated his life to it. In this episode Peter shares his insights on TM and the benefits he’s seen it give to those who are dealing with PTSD symptoms.

My favorite part of this chat is when Peter talks about getting better. Whether it be through meditation or with therapy, a person has to want to get better or see a need to improve the quality of their life. I saw that in myself and many of my friends. It seems to have taken an “ah ha” moment to start the desire within yourself to seek out ways to improve the current situation. There are endless ways to improve your life. This is an easy, simple way to help relieve stress and I hope you explore it a bit more if you find it interesting. I will be.

Anthony got out of the military (US Marine Corp) and had his first encounter with Outward Bound on one of their veteran courses. He found himself out of the military and now an 8th grade teacher struggling with his transition into civilian life. He reached out to Outward Bound to see what it would take for him to get involved and become an instructor. He has been there for six years now. He has found his purpose and fulfillment giving back to others. Outward Bound isn’t just an organization that takes you outdoors to see pretty things. They also have a curriculum and goals while being out in nature. They help other learn how to disconnect and to disconnect with a purpose, work on their communication, leadership, helping yourself, and goal setting to mention a few.

Anthony talking about the beauty and magnitude of nature really hit home with me. Reminds me off when I was trying to find beauty in the world again. I found myself in a position in life where I didn’t know what “I” liked or enjoyed doing. I had no real hobbies or passions. I sat down and tried to make a list of things I thought I enjoyed. I slowly marked them all off the list because they were flops until I got to a quick trip to Alaska I did. I saw a moose, 3 glaciers and the northern lights in a span of 4 days. I was blow away at the shocking beauty of nature and the powerful sensations of joy it sparked in me.

The First Responder: Women Leadership and the SDGs

The First Responder: Women Leadership and the SDGs

Two years into the COVID-19 pandemic, women have made important gains in representation, especially in senior leadership. Women have been at the forefront of solutions for managing societal crisis.

The question we aim to address in this episode is- how we can rethink of women leadership in ways to craft a just, more prosperous and fairer society.

Women are making a sufficient percentage in parliaments around the world. “Women need space, women can no more be viewed by the type of husbands they have,” says Kwati Candith Mashego-Dlamini

Most peace processes are premised on the assumption that the actors who pursued war, primarily men, will also act as the main agents for peace. Can women’s participation in conflict prevention and resolution, improve outcomes before, during, and after conflict?

We explore the question of what are the various issues that women need to manage and deal with, that are different from what men need to go through? Should women be further empowered and their potential unlocked to accelerate development?

How can female leadership be enhanced across the political sphere, boardrooms, and financial systems? What can be done to make technology more inclusive for women and to aid them in crisis response and recovery? How can education be made more accessible, not just for women as students, but for women as educators?
    In conversation with -
Smriti Z. Irani, Minister of Women and Child Development, India

Kwati Candith Mashego-Dlamini, Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, South Africa

Waseqa Ayesha Khan, Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Power, Energy and Mineral Resources; Member of Parliament, Bangladesh

Vanita Sharma, Advisor, Strategic Initiatives, Reliance Foundation, India

Shombi Sharp, Resident Coordinator India, United Nations

Moderator: Chandrika Bahadur, Former Director, SDG Academy, India

The Raisina Dialogue is a multilateral conference committed to addressing the most challenging issues facing the global community. Every year, global leaders in policy, business, media and civil society are hosted in New Delhi to discuss cooperation on a wide range of pertinent international policy matters.
The conference is hosted by the Observer Research Foundation in collaboration with the Government of India, Ministry of External Affairs.

    Are Dispatchers First Responders?

    Are Dispatchers First Responders?

On this episode of the podcast, I talk with Cpt. Robin Krouse. He has been in law enforcement for 36 years and is currently the commander in communications. Communications is the hub for your 911 dispatchers. He argues for dispatchers to be called first responders all over the nation; not just Texas. Take a listen and decide for yourself.
