    Space to Meet with God

    Space to Meet with God

One of the earliest lessons Peter and the disciples learn from Jesus is how he prioritizes his time with the Father.  Even after a long and exhilarating day of ministry, Jesus retreats to meet with God showing the disciples (and us) the power of regular meetings with God to realign our identity, purpose and direction.

    Catching Abundance

    Catching Abundance

In Luke's gospel, Jesus' call of Peter is preceded by his miraculous catch of fish.  In this seeming intrusion of Jesus, we see Peter's process of embracing Jesus.  He defers which leads to worship.  And his worship enables him to follow Jesus.  Peter gave Jesus space to show himself and Jesus demonstrated his desire to grant him an abundant life.

    Sermon - "Launch Out" (Feb 9, 2019)
Luke 5:1-11 Once while Jesus was standing beside the lake of Gennesaret, and the crowd was pressing in on him to hear the word of God, he saw two boats there at the shore of the lake; the fishermen had gone out of them and were washing their nets. He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon, and asked him to put out a little way from the shore. Then he sat down and taught the crowds from the boat. When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, "Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch." Simon answered, "Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets." When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break. So they signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help them. And they came and filled both boats, so that they began to sink. But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, "Go away from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man!" For he and all who were with him were amazed at the catch of fish that they had taken; and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. Then Jesus said to Simon, "Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching people." When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.

Throughout the Bible, inheritance is extremely important. It was so important that every 50 years they had the Year of Jubilee - if you lost your inheritance it came back to you, and you had another chance again. The next generation can receive without paying the price. However, they do pay the price to expand it and increase it. They can walk into that legacy, or they can lose it. God brings people into your life that you can draw from.

    Luke 5:1-11 - Audio

    Luke 5:1-11 - Audio
When faced with the challenge given by Jesus, Peter chose to swallow his pride and do as Jesus had asked; he cast his nets out into the deep after he'd already started packing up for the day. Upon drawing his nets back in, he was given a catch so big that it because to sink both of the boats. It is at this point that Peter falls down, humbled before Jesus, and Jesus commissions his as a fisher of men. In our lives, we are often faced with a choice to obey the Lord even when it seems foolish. When we choose to obey, however, we find ourselves humbled at the feet of Jesus.
