    Flash Gordon Redux!

    Flash Gordon Redux!

Nearly 3 years ago we began the project of restarting our podcast after a 12-year hiatus.  We were a bit rusty at first, we had some crappy audio and it took a while to get back into our groove. But, to commemorate the event we thought we'd present all you loyal Dispatchers with our first episode...
    with slightly improved audio!

    You're welcome.

Embark on a high-velocity tour through the galaxy of geek culture!
We'll share the untold tales of Brian Blessed's boisterous portrayal of Vultan and how Flash Gordon charmingly outmaneuvered Indiana Jones across the pond, with a royal nod from Queen Elizabeth II herself. It's an intergalactic mashup of culture that will have you laughing and longing for a time when sci-fi was as much about fun as it was about the future. Strap in, listeners—this episode is all about celebrating the chaotic charm that is Flash Gordon.

Cultpix Radio Ep.73 - Rocky Horror's "Science Fiction/Double Feature" Special

Cultpix Radio Ep.73 - Rocky Horror's "Science Fiction/Double Feature" Special

Count von Nudo and Schmutt P. Eddler do the time warp back to the musical that started a cult phenomenon exactly 50 years ago - The Rocky Horror (Picture) Show. We celebrate the opening song "Science fiction/Double Feature", which name-checks some of the greatest science fiction and horror films of the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s.

We have been able to include six of the 11 films mentioned in this theme week. The other five, such as King Kong (1933) and The Invisible Man (1933) belong to big Hollywood studios, making it more difficult for us to get the rights to show them (but we will keep trying).

Tony Sokol over at DenofGeek.com has a great overview of each song and film reference, from which we have stolen, sorry, quoted extensively. Do read his original article for more context and in-depth insights. It is remarkable how well Richard O'Brien knew his B-movies, given that there was no Internet or IMDb back in the days, but that is a sign of true geek fandom. Respect!

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) -  “Michael Rennie was ill the day the Earth stood still, but he told us where we stand.” A science fiction film with a message for earth to get its s#!t together, by the great director Robert Wise.  “Klaatu barada nikto”.

Flash Gordon (1936) -  “And Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear”. An episodic cinema serial with Buster Crabbe fighting Ming the Merciless. Familiar from television re-runs and of course the more famous 1980 re-make.

It Came From Outer Space (1953) -  “Then at a deadly pace it came from outer space.” An alien spaceship crash lands in the Arizona desert and people start acting strange. More Cold War paranoia, by director Jack Warner. Originally in 3D but shown here in boring 2D.

Doctor X (1932) -  “Dr X will build a creature.” Doctor Xavier doesn't actually build a creature (Frank N Further does tho), in this pre-code color film by Michael Curtiz, who later directed Bogart again in Casablanca (1942).

    “See androids fighting
    Brad and Janet
    Anne Francis stars in
    Forbidden Planet…”
    Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
    At the late night
    Double Feature picture show”

The Day of the Triffids (1963) - “And I really got hot when I saw Janette Scott fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills.” Or as Tony Sokol put it,  "Vegetarians eat vegetables. Humanitarians, like Doctor X, eat humans. Triffids are vegetables that eat humans, vegetarian or not." So don't look up at meteor showers, or you'll wake up all "28 Days Later." Freddie Francis co-directs.

Curse of the Demon aka Night of the Demon (1957) - “Dana Andrews said prunes, gave him the runes, and passing them used lots of skills.” Jacques Tourneur, of Cat People (1942) and I Walked with a Zombie (1943) fame, directs this British demonic chiller.

A special shout-out to RKO Radio Pictures.

1980: Flash Gordon / Top One-Time Movie Characters

1980: Flash Gordon / Top One-Time Movie Characters

Dave is back! When our sometime host Dave heard we were doing 1980, he requested we discuss one of his favorite movies, Flash Gordon. None of the rest of us had seen this movie, and it is quite an experience. While it may not be the best movie ever made, it definitely has found its way into pop culture still today, thanks in no small part to the movie Ted. It also doesn't hurt that the music was done by Queen. It's a movie everyone should probably see once.

Flash Gordon was pretty clearly thought to be a franchise with multiple sequels, but it didn't work out that way. So our draft in this one is our favorite characters who only ever appeared in one movie. Obviously a very broad topic, we cover a lot of ground and are sure to mention many greats that you will love.

Roy Garrett and the Moon Men Part Two of Six

Roy Garrett and the Moon Men Part Two of Six

Roy Garrett and the Moon Men! (Part Two of Six)

Roy Garrett and his crew encounter the Moon Men, a race of squishy, jiggly, amoeba-like aliens. Can Roy Garrett and his crew trust them? They're going to take a whole episode to decide! Meanwhile, Squeemy tries to hide his shame.

    Written by Bo Segrest

    Starring

BILL FRYER as ROY GARRETT, SPACE CAPTAIN – late 20s, early 30s. Brave, blonde, and a former high school quarterback. Any woman would be lucky to date him! Everybody, even his girlfriend, refers to him by his full name: ROY GARRETT.

BO SEGREST as SQUEEMY – Mid-to-late 20s. Roy Garrett's space cadet. Squeemish, neurotic, always messes up. Victim of both circumstance and his own decisions.

ROSEMARY WEST as STARLETT O’MASSES – 25. Roy Garrett's high school sweetheart. Has a lot of dignity, but also is dating Roy Garrett, so how much can you have? Is loyal, kind, smart, and in her first trimester.

DYLAN SMITH as RADAR – 35. The nerd of the group. Think NASA's smartest astronaut. Very intelligent, but the others never really let him talk enough to prove it. He knows his own value, but no one else does. Studied astrophysics under Albert Einstein's grandson, who was one of those professors who let students call him by his first name (Jim.)

HENRY NICKERSON as HANK – The ship’s computer. Talks like HAL 9000. Is very safe for the group to be around, but everything he says kind of sounds like he's plotting to kill everyone, though he never will. Is programmed to be very concerned for the well-being of the group dynamic. Has a round screen in each room of the ship where he can appear and talk to crew members. He can be removed from the ship so long as a lot of loose wires come along with him.

RHETT SOSEBEE as KING MOON - The King of the Moon people. He is a good leader. He recognizes the bravery and heroism in Roy Garrett and his crew. He knows everything there is to know about his people, and most of the time they all live very happily on the moon. Owns a shotgun.

DANIEL RAMIREZ as BLARFIE - Is the only one who talks in Moon-ese. Has a booger sheet that is always kept up to date.

    HANNAH SCHIFFLET as THE NARRATOR

Featuring MUSIC & SCORING by KAYLA HUTCHINS

    The Magic Switch

    The Magic Switch

Episode 46: Once upon a time, in the days before internet, online gaming, and other high tech activities, kids used to entertain themselves with whatever was available. So to aid in role-playing games, we scrounged for materials in the old man's workshop in order to make the experience even more authentic. Staging a pretend space launch was no exception. And one time, having a Frankenstein lab-style "magic switch" helped in the illusion -- up to a point. In this podcast series, Tom Nielson tells stories, shares memories, and concocts whimsical, humorous tales inspired by his life adventures, channeling the style of Jean Shepherd, Garrison Keillor, Mark Twain, Jerry Seinfeld, and other renowned storytellers. Names and details have been tweaked to protect the innocent.

    Flash Gordon

    Flash Gordon

In this episode we look at 1980's FLASH GORDON, based on the old comic strip serials (which eventually inspired George Lucas to make STAR WARS) and starring Sam J. Jones, Max von Sydow, Brian Blessed, Timothy Dalton, Melody Anderson and Ornella Muti. Directed by Mike Hodges (GET CARTER) and featuring a killer soundtrack from Queen, the film was a tumultuous mess during production with on-set fights, mixed-language crews, a constantly-revised script and star Sam J. Jones eventually leaving the production over a pay dispute and never returning, causing most of his lines to be dubbed. The film wasn't a critical success upon release, but over time has garnered cult status and the Queen soundtrack has stood the test of time. Let's jump back 40 years and find out WTF Happened to FLASH GORDON!
