    EP. 32: MIDNIGHT MOOBIES!

    EP. 32: MIDNIGHT MOOBIES!

Sit down kids, your Dirty Pillows Daddies wanna tell you a story. The great tale of the Midnight Movie! Back in the Olden Days, before you were even a Sparkle in my Thighs, we had big dirty cloudy movie theaters that could seat 600 comfortable stoners and freaks and geeks and queers. These movie theaters would sometimes wait till midnight to show their weirdest, artsiest, cheapest or gayest movies. You could smoke in the theater, and not just tobacky.. if you know what I mean, kiddo. And things got WILD, and lucrative! Many of the movies that first caught audiences attention this way have grown to become treasured cult films, record breakers and inspirations for weirdos for decades to come!

So sit back and revisit a time when communal film watching was King, and Frank N Furter and  Divine were Queens. Hear about Jamaica's first film and the explosion of Reggae. Learn what a Jodorowsky is and why he's Krys's guru. Which characters in Rocky Horror Picture Show have Krys and Matty portrayed and how did those experiences make them the gays you love today.

This episode has it all: History, Dog Poop, Hippie Culture, Zombies, Olivia Rodrigo and something called an Eraserhead. Literally something for everyone. How did this cult phenomenon happen, what happened to it, and what has it transformed into these days?

Ready to stay up late and do some laughin' and learnin'? Good!
Happy Valentines Day, let's go on a date to a MIDNIGHT MOVIE!

Don't Dream It, Be It: Rocky Horror, from London Stage to Cult Classic

Don't Dream It, Be It: Rocky Horror, from London Stage to Cult Classic

Let's do the Time Warp... it's the Rocky Horror episode!
Though many people have seen the cult classic film, few people know about its origins in a 63 seat London theatre.
    In this episode, we :

    • delve into the creative team and cast responsible for its deviant mayhem, sharing their back stories and how they all converged in time and place in early '70s London,
    • take a trip back in time to its first performance,
    • follow the Rocky Horror road to Hollywood,
    • pinpoint when this movie became a new creation based on a fan-conceived and fan-scripted interactive experience,
    • consider Rocky Horror Picture Show as a cosplay pioneer,  and
    • mark its legacy as young adult rite of passage, opening up ideas about identity, gender, and sexuality.

For some, Rocky Horror was a fun and raucous night out, for others, it provided a safe and dependable community for creativity and a sense of belonging.  Come along for the ride!

And come over to our SHOW NOTES for such fun bonus content!  You'll find:

    • rare photos from its original London run (spoiler: Tim Curry as a blonde?),
    • a ticket to a performance 2 weeks into its initial run (costing 80 p - oh, the longing),
    • original program,
    • a link to the full original script, articles, and interviews,
    • and this episode's drink recipe, the "Hot-Pa-Toddy, Bless My Soul."

Cultpix Radio Ep.73 - Rocky Horror's "Science Fiction/Double Feature" Special

Cultpix Radio Ep.73 - Rocky Horror's "Science Fiction/Double Feature" Special

Count von Nudo and Schmutt P. Eddler do the time warp back to the musical that started a cult phenomenon exactly 50 years ago - The Rocky Horror (Picture) Show. We celebrate the opening song "Science fiction/Double Feature", which name-checks some of the greatest science fiction and horror films of the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s.

We have been able to include six of the 11 films mentioned in this theme week. The other five, such as King Kong (1933) and The Invisible Man (1933) belong to big Hollywood studios, making it more difficult for us to get the rights to show them (but we will keep trying).

Tony Sokol over at DenofGeek.com has a great overview of each song and film reference, from which we have stolen, sorry, quoted extensively. Do read his original article for more context and in-depth insights. It is remarkable how well Richard O'Brien knew his B-movies, given that there was no Internet or IMDb back in the days, but that is a sign of true geek fandom. Respect!

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) -  “Michael Rennie was ill the day the Earth stood still, but he told us where we stand.” A science fiction film with a message for earth to get its s#!t together, by the great director Robert Wise.  “Klaatu barada nikto”.

Flash Gordon (1936) -  “And Flash Gordon was there in silver underwear”. An episodic cinema serial with Buster Crabbe fighting Ming the Merciless. Familiar from television re-runs and of course the more famous 1980 re-make.

It Came From Outer Space (1953) -  “Then at a deadly pace it came from outer space.” An alien spaceship crash lands in the Arizona desert and people start acting strange. More Cold War paranoia, by director Jack Warner. Originally in 3D but shown here in boring 2D.

Doctor X (1932) -  “Dr X will build a creature.” Doctor Xavier doesn't actually build a creature (Frank N Further does tho), in this pre-code color film by Michael Curtiz, who later directed Bogart again in Casablanca (1942).

    “See androids fighting
    Brad and Janet
    Anne Francis stars in
    Forbidden Planet…”
    Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh-oh
    At the late night
    Double Feature picture show”

The Day of the Triffids (1963) - “And I really got hot when I saw Janette Scott fight a Triffid that spits poison and kills.” Or as Tony Sokol put it,  "Vegetarians eat vegetables. Humanitarians, like Doctor X, eat humans. Triffids are vegetables that eat humans, vegetarian or not." So don't look up at meteor showers, or you'll wake up all "28 Days Later." Freddie Francis co-directs.

Curse of the Demon aka Night of the Demon (1957) - “Dana Andrews said prunes, gave him the runes, and passing them used lots of skills.” Jacques Tourneur, of Cat People (1942) and I Walked with a Zombie (1943) fame, directs this British demonic chiller.

#11: Flipping the Script: A New Look at Theatre, Casting, and Queering the Canon with Jasmine Joshua

This week, Stephen sits down with Jasmine Joshua, a Seattle writer, producer, actor and director to chat about flipping the script in theater! Together, they talk about taking established works like 1776 and reimagining them through the lens of casting, design and queering the cannon.

    You’ll hear:

    • When does context break the story
    • How Jasmine help produce the first all female full production of 1776
    • The surprising backlash they received when trying to mesh Rocky Horror Picture Show and the realm of Harry Potter
    • Re-entering the theater post COVID
    • And more!

    More about Jasmine:
Jasmine Joshua is a Seattle writer, producer, actor, and director. They are the Artistic Director of the award-winning Reboot Theatre Company whose mission is to test new interpretations of established works through nontraditional casting and design. Jasmine founded Reboot in 2014 while pregnant with twins and produced the nation's first ever all-female (at the time) production of 1776. Since its founding, Reboot has grown from a one-person operation to a nonprofit with a working board and has produced five productions, all nominated for Gregory Awards and winning several!

"All my dreams are lost and I can't sleep. Sleep alone could ease my mind. All my tears are dry and I can't weep. Old emotions may they rest in peace and dream."

WE MUST CRUSH THE NEW (KEVIN) McCARTHYISM - 1.26.23

WE MUST CRUSH THE NEW (KEVIN) McCARTHYISM - 1.26.23

EPISODE 120: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN

A-Block (1:42) SPECIAL COMMENT: We must act now against The New McCarthyism, or lose the Republic. With Trump restored to Facebook, dispatching Coke Jr and recording a video sending KEVIN McCarthy instructions for this insidious "Weaponization Subcommittee," the Democrats must literally counter-program. The Senate must crowd the Jim Jordan Star Chamber off the public stage by holding its own hearings (the suppression of the Mueller Report; the actions of just-arrested FBI agent and now Russian oligarch advisor Charles McGonigal in the infamous Comey Letter of October 2016; anything will do). Trump smells the opportunity to turn truth into falsehood, and falsehood into truth. We must stop him and The New McCarthyism - and damn fast.

B-Block (15:25) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Huggin, in New York (16:21) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Sapphire's successor is finally on the way; the man behind audience participation at "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" has passed; and a bad day for Joe Rogan and Fred Roggin (20:14)THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: HOW many people watched baseball's Hall of Fame announcement on the network it owns? Marge can see her reflection in a mirror. And the RWNJ who thinks Damar Hamlin didn't recover from his cardiac arrest and is actually dead and the vaccine killed him - because some people are just insensitive morons.

C-Block (25:50) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: With the Republicans now offering to place one of their presidential primary debates on CNN or MSNBC, time to recall the day they starkly told Tom Brokaw what HE had to do if they really expected John McCain to show up to the debate Brokaw would moderate in his swan song for NBC News: get me fired.

    Shoutout to Sheboygan

    Shoutout to Sheboygan
Where was the sport of bowling invented? Most people think it was aliens who unleashed this distraction upon the world in preparation for an invasion. However, has anybody investigated the possibility that it was actually developed in the city of Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA? Some might think that a town with the nickname "Malibu of the Midwest" would be better known for its surfing culture or is that just a front for something more sinister? In this episode we tactfully dodge that question and talk about weirder things.

Ep. 46: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

Ep. 46: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975)

    It's astounding. . .

This week, Cody and Matt conclude their Howl-o-ween Double Feature with the biggest party this side of Transylvania! They discuss the crown jewel of cult cinema while going absolutely feral over Tim Curry. Not to mention, jumps to the left, steps to the right, and the importance of community on the fringe.

The boys gush over Patricia Quinn (again) and find any excuse to sing a show tune (again). So, don't dream it. . . be it!

Thanks for listening and have a Happy Halloween!
